Guest Crafting with Danielle Thompson!

Remember the super fun and super cute arrow tutorial our friend Danielle shared with us?  Well, she’s back again with a Thanksgiving perfect quickie craft to keep little hands busy while you are putting the finishing touches on the Turkey.
You just need some pine cones, cotton balls, glue and a color printer to download these great feathers digital kit from Kitschy Digital.
I know, gorgeous, right?  And then:
  • Just opened the digital feather files in Photoshop, reduced them in size when needed, print them and then cut them out.  You don’t have Photoshop–no worries–the kit includes a PDF that you can just print out.
  • Attach feathers to a pine cone with glue.
  • Attach little cotton ball for head and be awed by the adorableness your little cutie created all by him or herself.
  • If you are ahead of schedule you can even create little beaks with some wood grain contact paper.
You could also create a place card with your guests’ names and slip it into the pine cone in front of the feathers.. or just write your guest’s name on one of the feathers! Color me sold!

Danielle says, “Kids would have fun creating these, but I also think they’d be great for your vintage/kitschy inspired dinner table.  Break out your Pyrex and vintage dinnerware, and these kitschy pine cone turkeys will fit right in!”

I agree!

Thanks, Danielle for sharing this charming addition to any kiddie table! You are welcome at our Thanksgiving dinner table anytime!

Vintage Kiddo: Holiday Style for the Ladies

image: Kate Spade

Hurray! It’s Thanksgiving this week! And you know what that means, Christmas and Hannukah will soon be upon us. I soooo love the holidays— this is always my favorite time of year—but I have a rule about not even *thinking* about Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I never understand the rush. Trust me, though, once that turkey is long gone I’ll be ready for my carols and pretty lights.

At the same time, I know that holiday parties are right around the corner—my work party is Dec. 10!! So since we all have a little extra time this weekend I thought it might be fun to do a little holiday-style shopping round up especially for the ladies! Hey, why should those kiddos get to have all the fun??

VINTAGE PRETTIES
When it comes to party dresses I have three criteria: I want to feel pretty, I want to wear something that’s a little different from what everyone else is wearing and I like to feel somewhat comfortable (meaning, no teetering on 5 inch heels for this girlie).

Of course you know my first choice is going to be a vintage dressie. It’s the one way to guarantee you walk in wearing something that no one else has! The cut, the colors, the fabrics. If you are searching on eBay or Etsy, here are some grand key words that will pull up some festive lovelies.

This pale blue Ice Princess dress is soooo lovely. Pair it with white sparkly tights and look like a little snowflake! From Etsy seller Chiffonier.

I am so gaga over this colorful chiffon, swirly mosaic gown. It’s tooo fabulous! Plus I love any excuse to wear a gown—although if a maxi dress is too much for you, you can always lop it off around the knee for the picture perfect cocktail dress! From the always awesome Frecklewonder Vintage:

Mmmm. This watermelon fuschia cocktail dress is also soooo gorgeous. Reminds me of a Kate Spade dress! I can imagine twirling around in this with a glass of bubbly in mah hand! Also from my sweet gal Frecklewonder:

I also love this brilliant emerald green dressie….just look at those jewelled pockets. If this fit me it would already be hanging in my closet. Available on eBay—I lost the listing. I’ll find it and update, pinkie swear!

This one is slightly more casual but still so fun….the candy cane, chevron stripes are FAB. From thewitcheryvintage.

And then, of course, there are the VELVETS. Rich, sumptuous and perfecto for the holidaze. SadieDeluxie Cranberry Red Mini Dress

This dreamy blue sapphire dressie: Persephone Vintage

SPARKLE TOPS

As much as I love a good vintage dressie, it’s often hard to find them in the perfect size. A great option are these lovely sequin vintage tops. Pair them with a cute skirt (modern or retro) and add a perfect touch of sparkle!

I love the tinsel effect on this cutie harlequin dazzle top from Etsy seller figandtwig:

These two remind me of the fairytale, Snow White and Rose Red…..brunettes would look drop dead divine in the cherry red and blondes would look terribly chic in the baby blue. Both from Rtsy seller SkivvyluluVintage.

COLOR vs BLACK
A lot of times I hear, “Alix….I love looking at these pretty pictures, but I’m not QUITE this flashy/colorful. It’s just not me.” Well, honestly I think color is for EVERYONE. But I understand that some people feel much more comfortable in a classic Little Black Dress. And that’s OK! You can still add a little punch to the LBD and here are some of my favorite ways.

Colorful stockings! This is one of my all time, super fave looks that works with pretty much any black dress. The key is to keep your shoes simple—look how fun these outfits are, and everyone is wearing simple black shoes!

Another favorite way to sparkle up a holiday outfit are embelleshed vintage cardies. These sweet and cozy sweaters are typically from the 50s and add a sweet touch with their beading and sequins. The perfect way to add a little oomph to last year’s dressie! They are a great investment because you can even wear them throughout the year with jeans too.

This one from leibemarlene is so beautiful.

The one above is sold, but you can pick up one just like it on eBay from LoveSpyVintage.

This pretty beaded 50s cardigan from July Poppy is also heaven…

Here’s another take on the sequin cardy. I love it belted liked this! Available at Tiger Vintage.

PRETTY PARTY SHOES
And then, of course, there are the sassy shoes! When in doubt, wear something fun, festive and COMFY on those toes!

These Miss L Fire golden t-strap numbers are so dreamy. I have them in black with a red rose (see ’em here) and can vouch for the fact that they are COMFY as can be. Pick up a pair at one of my *fave* online shops, MODCLOTH.

Look how cute these black and white mary jane sassers are? I love the bow detail. Also from MODCLOTH.

I think these grey patent flats with jewel toes are soooo sweet. And they’re a steal from Target.

These purple suede wedges have a little more of a heel, and I love the color. From Target.

These fuschia fancy flower flats have such a great toe embellishment with that pom pom flower. Love them! They’d be cute with jeans too! From Old Navy.

And because vintage isn’t for everyone (again, sizing can be tricky) here are two super cute modern options that have a very retro sensibility but are available in a multitude of sizes.

How cute is this Vintage Style LBD? The little belt and Audrey Hepburn neckline is so lovely.

Of course I had to throw in a little pop of COLOR. I think this Purple Jewel Tone dress would be supremely flattering on all shapes…and while it’s colorful it’s kind of classic, no? Also from Ze Target. No I don’t get kick backs from Target. I’m just obsessed.

I leave you with my final obsession. The adorable Sue of Giant Dwarf (maker of the iconic Starlette Crown which I covet beyond belief!!) has these heavenly little hair pins. Her Starlette Sparklers, hair pins made with uber sparkly German Glass Glitter, are so fun and pretty. I think one would be super fetching, but I looooove the trio. You know my Devil-Ette code name is The Starlet, so I think these MUST make their way into my hot little hands sooon! They are a great reminder that a little jeweled hair clip can be the perfect final touch to your holiday outfit.

HAPPY MONDAY friends. Should we do another one of these grown up round ups again soon? That was pretty fun!

PS How cute is our Thanksgiving Header, courtesy of Kiddo Artist in Residence, Draw*Pilgrim?? My sweet friend Pilgrim is something I’m supremely thankful for!!

Vintage Kiddo Retro Round up!

Well, count down to turkey day. And boy oh boy am I looking forward to four straight days of time off.  Unfortunately my RSI is acting up, so I’m going to keep it brief and just focus on the truly fabulous finds of vintage awesomeness!

OK—I know it is totally naughty of me to post something summery as we are looking down the barrel of winter, but I would not be right of me to post this nautical number with a Mondrian go-go twist to boot! But this is one to buy now and save for summer in my opinion. (Ahem, Jody… ) How can you part with it Frecklewonder??

While we’re at it, I know it is wrong to show something as summery as this adorable baby dress with matching knickers, but it’s so cute, really, how could I not?  And isn’t it warming up quite nicely in Australia, Pilgrim?  From the always wonderful Robot Parade.

Speaking of warming up, check out this adorable coat it’s togglerific!  From eBay seller, Flying Debris!

Check out these sweet widdle corduroy slippers featuring the rare green polka dotted bunny! From eBay seller, CJSBargains.

Because the thermometer has the gaul to slink downward for the next couple of months, I just had to include another coat. But this one comes with a hat AND a cat.   From Etsy seller, Aunt Sue’s Old and New.

Clearly I’m all about coats today, but really, how could I look you all straight in the face and NOT post this Disneytastic pair of white patent Mary Janes.  Do you see the little mouse heads inside? And the heart cut-outs?  Sigh.  Again, from eBay seller, CBSBargains.

This little owly shirt is a hoot!  From Etsy seller, Vintage from Finland.  (This Etsy stop is totally worth a closer look!)

It seems that there is a dearth of cool vintage sweaters for boys.  So I was quite chuffed to find this cutie! Velvet! For boys! From Etsy seller FuzzyMama.

Oh, and the ADORABLENESS of this set!  Sweater pants with matching booties.  If that doesn’t keep that tiny bottom warm I don’t know what will! Never worn, but hopefully will be soon. Nudge nudge… Thanks for the find 3 Ring Circus!

OK—this isn’t really something to wear… I mean, as a crafty lady, I don’t think I could let one teaspoon of applesauce get on such stunning embroidery that took so much time.  But wouldn’t these embroidered bibs be the cutest thing EVER on the wall above a crib?  Seriously. I DIE. From Etsy seller, BabyComeBack.

We have a full holiday vintage kiddo round-up in the works, so be sure to check back here next week!

AND be sure to pop by in a few hours, for Alix has something very special for the ladies coming up this afternoon…

Meet Lula! Our Weekly Kiddo.

Aw yeah it’s friday my friends! And can I just say AGAIN how nice it is to be back. This week we have a super duper cutie as our Weekly Kiddo. I love when kid’s develop their own taste in clothing—I’m always intrigued by their preferences—and our girl today already knows what she likes. Meet the awesomely cool Lula! Miss Lula is a sassy five year old who lives in San Francisco. She will only wear dresses or tunics. No pants ever! AND she refuses to wear jeans at all. Hah! I love it. (And yes, many moons ago there was a little girl named Alexandra who was EXACTLY the same….no wonder I love this kiddo!) Take it away Lula!

How cute is this little rock star?? Those glammy sunnies just kill me! Now, despite being a total girlie girl, the lovely Miss Lula is also a big time nature lover. She thinks long nature walks are the best and enjoys collecting bugs and picking flowers. This little cutie is also a big animal lover and has seven fish, three butterflies, one grasshopper, a hamster named Irontail and one sassy pug named Cleo. Lula loves music and likes rockin’ out around the house with her daddy.

We chatted with her awesome mama Liz who told us this:

Lula just started Kindergarten this year and is taking a jewelry making class after school. She loves to make her own necklaces and paint pictures. When she’s not busy filling our house with insects, Lula enjoys dressing up as one! She got a Butterfly costume and a Peacock costume for Halloween this year and looved them. She is a super happy and extremely funny little girl!

I have to say that Liz is a very stylish mama and you can see where Lula gets her cool style from. Liz told us a few more of Lula’s faves. Best animal? Panda bears! Top beverage? Hot Cocoa! Fave dessert? Chocolate Chip Ice Cream! Top toys? Zoobles, Zhu Zhu pets, Littlest Pet Shop and Pillow Pets. Go Lula! We love this sassy little sweetie. Thanks so much Liz for sharing her with us!

Cool Thanksgiving Crafts for Kiddos

image: i love india

Everyone, I’m sure, has a memory or two involving the words “Thanksgiving” and “crafting” from their childhood. From pilgrim hats made out of black construction paper (with tin foil buckles of course!) to the classic hand-print turkey, it seems like crafts and Thanksgiving are made to go hand in hand. As I went on the hunt for fun Turkey Day craft projects to share with you, I was a bit amazed at how many variations on the same projects were out there! I decided it would be fun to try and find some alternatives to the ol’ hand print turkey to share with you. My only criteria? CUTE AND EASY.

Let’s start with a bang….

How beautiful and cool are these fall harvest crowns?? They are fabulous yet so easy to make. And really, who doesn’t want to wear a crown? Perfect for your little prince OR princess.

From Dana Made It.

I’m also loving these super simple-yet-chic button napkin rings. Easy enough for a five year old to do but snazzes up your table beautifully!

From Copy Cat Crafts via The Crafty Crow.

I think these birdie gourds look SO playful and fun—and you’ll never look at a gourd quite the same way.

Again, little fingers should have a grand time crafting up their own birdie, but they are clever enough to make a fantastic centerpiece!

Found via the crafty maya*made.

And these leaf place settings are perfect for your artistic little kiddos. All you need is a silver pen and leaves from your backyard.

Via the marvelous Marie, from Make and Takes.

If you’re like us (non-fall-havin’ San Franciscans), here is a way to make your own foliage! Pretty and easy-peasy tissue flowers:

From Smooth Pebble

Our girl Pilgrim has created this beyond adorable printable that can be incorporated into all kinds of fun decor. She has two versions, one in color and one in black and white for your little one to color in themselves. Head over to Draw! Pilgrim to download it yourself! Hurrah!

And finally…..OK, OK, I know I said no turkeys…but  I couldn’t resist. Just look how cute this little feller is! He’s made of a handprint traced on gingham—I mean honestly, who doesn’t love gingham??

From Bella Dia.

Ooh…wouldn’t brown gingham napkins be lovely for Thanksgiving dinner?? Hmmm, note-to-self: buy some brown gingham and make cute napkins this weekend!

So there you have it friends. I hope you found some fun inspiration for Thanksgiving! Do you have any favorite crafties you like to do around this time of year? Let us know!
