Alix’s Vintage Bookshelf :: George the Gentle Giant

This book has such fun little pictures…and the story is pretty cute too. Both the tale and the drawings are by Adelaide Hall and the year was 1965 (which is why the Giant is sportin’ them thar mod pilgrim cuffs!).

These little strawberry drinkies in the picnic scene are pretty amazing! And the ice cream cones….

I just love the way the water is so geometric….all those little triangles!

So sweet! Tomorrow is Friday….hope you have a weekend of giant-sized fun!

Vintage Royal Wedding: Prince Charles and Lady Diana.

Hi hi everyone! I’m back from my little Calistoga getaway–I’ll chat about with you all next week.  I can’t tell you how exhilarating yet sadly nerve-wracking it can be to be completely without Internet access for three days.  But what wonderful posties have been filling up our little blog, eh?  Thank you so much Jenny, Jody, Karen, Mari and most importantly, Alix for managing everything so beautifully in my absence.

But even in my little cocoon up in Calistoga, I heard rumblings from England about a ROYAL WEDDING.  Yeah yeah, I’m sure this Will and Kate wedding thing is all that and a bag of crisps, but as far as royal wedding go, really, there was only one wedding in my mind.

Prince Charles and Lady Di.

Yup. I was completely obsessed with them in 1981. Completely and utterly obsessed. Instead of spending my Saturday afternoons at the roller rink trading puffy stickers* with my friends during the slow songs, I would spend hours cutting up my Dad’s Newsweek magazines and adding all of the photos of Lady Diana to my scrapbook. Whenever my parents would have cocktail parties, I would shyly come down and annoy their kind guests for a half hour with my Royal wedding scrapbook. Fortunately drunk people are really tolerant of scrapbook toting kids.

I even watched and recorded on my Dad’s Betamax the TV movie of Charles and Diana’s romance starring Catherine Oxenberg.

And of course I got up at 4:00AM on Wednesday, July 29th to watch the Royal Wedding. Here are a few facts that I still have rolling around in my brain from my early eighties obsession with the Royal Wedding in no particular order:

  • Princess Diana rode in a glass covered coach
  • Diana didn’t get to choose her own bridesmaids or flowergirls
  • She did pick her engagement ring, which was the biggest one she was offered
  • She had to wear flats because she was so close in height to Charles
  • Kiri Tekanwa sang at the wedding
  • Diana didn’t promise to “obey” (right ON!)

Oh and I would have given my Raggedy’s life to be one of those flower girls.

I  remember the rush of seeing her wedding dress for the first time and swooning knowing that a girl could wake up one day as a “commoner” and go to bed a princess. Truly magical.

Sigh…

Yes, yes. We know how it ended. My scrapbooks were tossed somewhere after riding lesson and before senior prom and Charles and Diana went their own ways. But I will always remember this young lady and how she grew up to be a princess.

* Of course we’ll do a post on puffy stickers! It’s just a matter of time!

Did you know that April is “National Grilled Cheese Month”? I’ve pretty much declared April as, “National Pose with the Hotties Your Friends are Dating Month.” Cheese and Hotties? Can it get any more delicious in here? I think the sound of a “Fetish & Honey Sammie” takes the cake. Who knew, a grilled cheese could be kicked up to “sophisticated dessert” status.

But let’s talk about old boyfriends for a minute. It was an old boyfriend of mine that taught me that feta is only a zillion times better if it’s bought in a block and imported from Bulgaria. Yes, I realize Bulgaria is nowhere near Greece. He was also the same boyfriend that taught me if a man looks sexy by the way he sits in a chair, then you need to seriously brace yourself for what’s about to come.

Ginormous thanks to my fabulous friend Ingrid, for not only snapping these photos, but also letting me borrow her über foxy fellow.

Recipe inspired by The Rose Wine Bar in Southpark

  • 1 whole wheat pita pocket
  • 2 oz feta from block (don’t even think of buying the crumbled crap)
  • drizzle of olive oil
  • drizzle of honey

Open pita completely and fill with slices of block feta. Leave about 1 inch around edge of pita free. This is so when the feta melts it won’t make a mess. Drizzle skillet with olive oil and grill feta filled pita on each side until slightly browned. Drizzle honey on top.

Behave tonight!

Oh, Miz VS, I can’t get enough of you! Thanks for sharing this divine sounding and I’m sure equally divine tasting treat with us here at ModernKiddo.com!

Real Life :: Hawaii Ya Doing?

Friends, I can’t even tell you what an amazing trip we had! It was relaxing as can be….sadly it took me a good two days to get used to doing NOTHING! We swam and ate and lounged….a few sights were seen, but mostly it was fun in the sun. Wolfie LOVED it. He doesn’t know how to swim just yet but he was so happy and confident in the water. I ordered him the cutest little swim suits from two of my fave brands, Polarn O. Pyret and Mini Boden. They were kind of Euro style trunks that looked adorable online but In real life they were a leeeeetle bit smaller than I had envisioned. Think Daniel Craig as James Bond. I kept giggling— they were still SUPER cute but hilariously short compared to other kids in their ankle length board shorts. Wolfie loved them, struttin’ around the pool all confident and what not.

I have so many photos to share but for now, here is a little sampler of our trip! These photos were all shot on my iPhone with Instagram (i’m “galexina” if you care to follow! If you aren’t using it, it’s too much fun….Twitter meets Flickr!). MAHALO!

This is where Wolfie spent most of his time. The pool. There was a huge grown up pool and then this terrific kid’s pool with pebbly/sand bottom and a sweet slide, that was only 2 feet of water. It was so amazing for him to be able to play independently in the water. My eye was on him, of course, but I didn’t have to literally hold him or be next to him.

This is where I spent a good deal of my time:
