Vintage Kiddo Retro Round Up–the All Plaid Back to School Edition!

Although the Peach still has a few years before she attends school, today is the first day of school for many kids in our neighborhood. And nothing says back to school more than PLAID to me.  So, this will be an all plaid Retro Round Up of awesomeness. Hurrah!

What is more school-tastic than a PLAID APPLE? Exactly! Nothing.  And here it is in a sweet little vintage dress.  From  Etsy seller,  LoveLoves2LoveLoves.

Is there anything cuter than little kiddo Keds. I found it–vintage plaid kiddo Keds. From Etsy seller, Toby11.

Don’t let your little one’s obsession with only wearing purple keep her away from plaid. Check out this sweet purple plaid dressie from Etsy seller, HartandSew, whose cozy shop also features quite a few other plaid pieces.

Check out this adorable plaid 1970s jacket. Also perfect for hayrides and overall cuteness.  From Etsy seller, Little of This, A Little of That.

I think this vintage plaid lunch box is just perfection. Heck, I would use that today! From Etsy seller, The Hungarian Peddler.

I love a little kiddo in a vest, but make it a plaid vest and I might pick that kid up and kiss them. Warning. From Etsy seller,

Almost too awesome for words.  Toughskins really are the best brand that needs to come back.  From Etsy seller, Fibbie. Oh and good gracious, she has another pair for sale too!!!

Oh, how I adore this vintage jumper from Etsy seller Flour Clothing.   This dress can take care of my plaid longing and could be worn on the 4th of July as well.

What is cuter than a plaid puppy with polka dots on it? Yeah, pretty much nothing. Or your kiddo in this shirt with the plaid puppy with polka dots on it. From Etsy seller, Oh Dear Things.

OK, ONE more plaid dress–but oh, it’s a super cute one. I must look away or I will buy it right now. From Etsy seller,JDBok.

Sorry–gotta include one more. Shoes. Oh, but just not any shoes–red and plaid saddle shoes.  I think they touched my soul, they are so awesome. From Etsy seller, White Wash.

Happy first day of school!

Alix’s Great Summer Adventure: Part 1

This summer was huge. Like “Three Weeks, Three States” huge. You may recall that I made the big decision to quit my job and take a summer sabbatical to refresh, recharge and spend time with my family. (Read about it here.) Just so you don’t think I live this glamorous-non-workin- life of galavanting cross country for weeks on end, let me explain! It’s not always like this. For the past 7 years I have worked my little booty off…every vacation we have taken I have had work looming over me. I check my email. I work on script edits. I take quickie calls. It kinda sucked. This was officially the first time I have been on a vacation and had NO STRESS & NO WORK hanging over my head. HEAVEN! We decided we wanted to visit both my parents and greg’s parents this summer and thus, the Grandparents Tour 2011 began! First stop? Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!

This is George and Silver, Greg’s parents. They’re great! I feel fortunate that I have very cool in-laws. We all get along so well and I love visiting them. They can’t fly, so we don’t get to see them as much as we would like to, but we try to make sure that Wolfie see’s them once a year. He had a really terrific time!

Myrtle Beach is a fun destination. Lots of miniature golf, beaches and a fun boardwalk. It was hot as blazes while we were there, though, which was awesome and awful all at the same time. Awesome, because it was great to have a full on HOT SUMMER….but really sticky and sweaty and we really couldn’t hang out outside for very long. I’m also a wimp in the heat.

On one of our first days Greg, Wolfie and I piled into the car to head to the Boardwalk. Along the way I discovered soooooo many gorgeous old hotels with cool signs. I was DYING to have a full on photo shoot out there….except I was a sweaty mess. Also, I had Greg and Wolfie hollerin’ “C’mon shutterbug!! Let’s get going!! It’s HOT out here!!”

This one was so beachie cool….

The boardwalk itself was so colorful and fun. We ducked into a couple of air conditioned arcades to play games and cool off. This one had loads of vintage games and Wolfie loooooved this baseball one.

We hit some of the rides too….check out how red Wolfie’s cheeks are!

These little cars and motorcycles were among my favorite as a little girl. I’m sure it was because most of them are glitter sparkle dune buggies and bikes—who wouldn’t want to cruise around in a flashy ride like that?

Because of the heat, I had the brilliant idea to get a twisty cone. As I ordered it the woman looked at me kinda funny…

She handed me the cone and said, “You know this is gonna melt, right?” I thought to myself, “Well duh, it’s ice cream.” I took the cone and girrrrrl, I didn’t take but one lick and the whole damn thing melted down my arm. It was THAT HOT. I’m not even joking…it was dribbling every where. I suddenly realized NO ONE was eating ice cream. Total newbie move. By now I was literally sticky and hot as bejeebus. We decided it was time to head home.

Where we immediately jumped in the pool! Ahhhhh……so refreshing.

So that’s Part 1. I have a little more of Myrtle Beach to share before we move on to Michigan! I have a few links to share later, but I really wasn’t online much so it’s a shorter list than usual! Have an awesome weekend friends…

Halfway through two.

Dear Peach,

I can’t believe you are already halfway through your second year.  It’s been quite a year. And for someone who has only been on this planet for 2.5 years, you certainly have rocked my world something fierce.  My life is so much sweeter with you in it.

I apologize right now for losing and not keeping up your baby book. And I’m still upset that I can’t find the envelope that holds your first haircut hair, but I will give you a little snapshot into your life that hopefully one day you’ll look back on and smile.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

You love to read about Thomas the Tank Engine’s stories.  And you like to tickle pictures of him. Because I guess the underbellies of steam engines are rather ticklish.

I love that when you meet someone new, you are quiet at first, taking a read of the situation and then just turn on the charm. You are a good sharer.

With a bit of prodding, you do clean up your toys.  Although you do enjoy your tricycle, you prefer to push it than actually use the pedals.

You ask me WHY a lot.  When I ask you WHY you say, “because I need it/did it.” The student becomes the master.

Last night when I scooped you up, you grabbed my cheek and gave me butterfly kisses.  You enjoy roasted brussel sprouts.

You have a very pronounced sweet tooth.

You love to run on your tippy toes. You have been known to greet the cat some mornings with a hiss. Although you still love her madly.

You love love love puzzles. You said the 25 piece ones were too easy. I need to get you tougher puzzles.

Child, you can be So. Damn. Stubborn.   Sometimes.

You are determined to stay in a crib for the rest of the year. You told us you do not want to meet Santa Claus.

You love to sing and dance and play your little piano.  You are on tune 85 percent of the time.

If they were giving out Olympic medals for playing Ring Around the Rosy, you would have certainly won the gold.  Your favorite color is decidedly orange.

You grow. You grow. You grow.

You call all of your stuffed animals/dolls your friends as in, “Hey, what’s my friend doing under my crib?”

And this you must know–you are loved. Loved to the moon and back, my sweetheart girl.

I can’t wait to see what you do next!

Love, Mama.

What did you read this summer?

Soooooo I can’t lie. I love pop novels and I have recently been obsessed with Regency Romances (thank the lawd for my Kindle so no one can see the cheesy romance covers!). Julia Quinn is my favorite…and I could write a whole post about how her stories are such fun escapism. But I recently gave my romance love the boot and picked up The Hunger Games,by Suzanne Collins. I had heard the buzz but really didn’t have any clue what it was all about. My friend Doe shoved a copy of this futuristic tale in my hand an said, “Oh you HAVE to read.” I brought it with me on vacation and I was HOOKED.  I devoured the entire action-packed trilogy in a week….have you read it? It’s a Young Adult book, but extremely engaging. What did you think? Katniss is an excellent heroine and I thought the story was very clever. My mom is the one who got me hooked on futuristic/sci-fi movies and gave me my first Ray Bradbury novel….I had a feeling she would love this series and she started reading it while I was in Michigan. She was hooked too! We can’t wait for the movie. Crossing my fingers it’s as awesome as the books!
