JC Penney is trying to go Target, with cute lines from designers like Marchesa and Jonathan Adler. The Adler “Happy Chic” line is really cute—and way more affordable than his “main” line of goodies. Bedding, kitchenware and much much more. See it here.

2. SILLY SELFIES

This is hilarious. Selfless Portraits is an art project where strangers across the world draw each other’s Facebook profile pictures. My friend John’s illustrations are awesome….or as he says, “awesomely humbling”. See the entire gallery here.

9. BANANAS FOR MAD MEN.

 photo madmen_banana1.jpg

While I was a little late to the party,  I ADORE Mad Men. I was intrigued to hear of the Mad Men inspired line of clothing at Banana Republic, but I was even more intrigued to read Carlos’ post on whether this take on “mod” is authentic or not! It’s a great read. Check it out here at Mod Male!

10. KATE’S KEDS.
I love these cute Kate Spade for Keds sneaks….especially the pointy toed ones.

She’s My Hero:: Valerie Harper & Rhoda!

Earlier this year, Valerie Harper announced that she has terminal brain cancer and possibly only three months to live.  For some reason, this really hit me hard. Valerie Harper played one of the most iconic TV characters—and one of my absolute favorites—Rhoda Morgenstern on the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

One must admit that the entire Mary Tyler Moore cast was full of some of the most talented and funny actors in the history of the universe.  But Rhoda stood out in my opinion and many many other people agree.

There was just something about this wonderful character Valerie Harper created. Rhoda was believable, funny, smart and very lovable. It was easy to put Mary on a pedestal, but you wanted Rhoda as a friend. Rhoda emanated a warmth that was 100 percent Valerie Harper. Valerie’s friends have been commenting over the past few weeks about what a giving person she is and a supportive friend through and through.

And Rhoda’s style was magnificent! I need a moment just to talk about the scarf.  Don’t tell me you haven’t tried wrapping your head in a scarf at least once? Because you’d be lying.  And we can thank Valerie for that, whose stylist wore a scarf and she thought it would work well on Rhoda. And boy did it ever.  And that stylist?  She ended up doing her own fashion label. Thanks to encouragement from Valerie Harper.

But Rhoda’s wonderful character was too big to be squeezed into the role of Mary’s bestie. She deserved her own show, which was just as wonderful as Mary Tyler Moore’s show in my mind!  The show was also a little love letter to New York.  In fact Rhoda took the subway to her own wedding.  In a fabulous wedding dress no less! With a matching white sweater to boot.

So, three cheers for Rhoda and best wishes and love to Valerie Harper.  Thank you for leaving an indelible, beautiful, scarf-wrapped fingerprint on my childhood and my life. You are a part of of us all.

If you want to read about some more Valerie Harper love, I suggest you go to Made for TV Mayhem for links to other wonderful Rhoda tributes.

Ain’t Nothing Like a Dame’s Sale

If you follow us on instagram (@missdottie and @galexina) then you know that this weekend we joined forces with all our Dames pals and held a super huge vintage blow out sale! We all went through our closets and collections and really weeded things out. The point was to make some moolah, but also to try to purge! These sales are so much fun, but TONS of work! We spent much of Saturday setting up and lemme tell you, Mercury Retrograde was really being particularly sneaky!!  We had clothing racks toppling and pricing gun disasters! Of course we just laughed through it all and then finally (finally!), hours later, we were able to step back and survey our little Pop-Up shop and friends, it looked SO GOOD! Over nine lovely ladies selling clothing in ALL sizes. Oh, it was so hard not to shop ourselves!! Prices were amazingly low with most things under $20. Of course a few fancy items (like this INSANE LEOPARD COAT!!) were pricier, but still really a great deal compared to Etsy/eBay!

Come Sunday we were all rarin’ to go for the sale….fingers crossed that we would have a great turn out. We remembered last minute that it was St. Patrick’s Day, so we all wore green to look a lil festive. Not like the place needed to get more festive—check out all this COLOR!!!

 photo Dames_2.jpeg

Our sweet friend Doe has been having a run of bad luck (her landlord informed her recently that she and her family had to move out of their house with barely any notice!) so it was a lucky day indeed when one of our pals showed up on St. Patrick’s day with a real four-leaf clover she had plucked out of the grass just that morning! An excellent start to the day…

(it looks like a three leafer in this pic, but I swear it was FOUR!)

Our fears were unfounded, as the place was insanely crowded (we held it at our Dame Rusty’s beautiful home!) and everyone who stopped by was so sooo nice. Of course we couldn’t resist doing a little shopping ourselves. At the end of the day we all made a tidy little sum….whoo hoo!

The perfect shoes to wear between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day! Hee hee! From Etsy seller, UDA Kids.

I didn’t know Tupperware made super cute little plastic toys once? LOVE! From Etsy seller, Fun Finds Vintage.

I think this wee jonjon is so darling–and whoever came up with the idea of putting a little lantern on it is genius! From Etsy seller, Fuzzymama!

4. QUATRO
 photo Stork_0.jpg
Lately I’ve seen lots of “A Photo a Week of my Children” series, which I think are so special. But I was very charmed by Ashley’s clever take on it. A Photo a Week of her husband! When you have kiddos it’s easy to put your relationship on the back burner (life gets consumed with diapers and feedings and consoling little ones and just all around silly play time). I thought this was a really beautiful way to stay connected. See more over here.

5. CINCO

These Swan Lake shoes were The Shoes of Tomorrow in 1957. LOVE! See more past future shoes HERE. (via Honey Kennedy)

6. SEIS

This is so stinkin’ clever. You can recycle/reuse old glass bottle and jars—but give them a wee face lift with the Snug Vase! Get yours here.

7. SIETE

 photo NYT_1.jpg

Dottie shared this fun link with me. The New York Times blog “The City Room” has been holding a “Kids Draw the News” contest, where they ask children to draw the latest headlines. It’s SO charming and sweet. I would have been allll over this when I was a kiddo! These photos were for a story about a runaway zebra.  See more here.

8. OCHO
 photo PhotoShop.jpg
This cracked me up. A family took a group portrait that was special to them….and within a year or so, the son got a divorced. His mom wanted to remove the ex-wife from the photo (apparently it wasn’t a pleasant divorce) and had someone do some photoshop wizardry on the pic. Instead of holding the arm of the ex-wife, she’s holding a beer! HAH! Read about it here.

9. NUEVE

I mean….what’s to say about Awesome Soul Train GIFS but OH YES. See tons more here.

10. DIEZ. BONUS VIDEO

I think this British commercial with Audrey Hepburn is extremely charming. It’s getting mixed reviews (using her likeness when she isn’t alive etc) but her sons said she adored chocolate and they though she would have approved of it (as did they, since they are in charge of her estate). I think it’s rather tastefully done! (I like it so much more than that Audrey GAP ad from years back.)
