Guest Post // Frecklewonder’s Thrifting with Kiddos

hello frendos! so i have another fantastic guest post for you from my girl Jenny. now, you know we love the vintage, recycled and thrifted here at Modern Kiddo. we get a lot of emails from people asking us for thrifting tips and so i was super thrilled when jenny offered to share some of her amazing tips and tricks. jenny visited me 6 years ago and we got to go thrifting together which was SO much fun! i consider myself a thrifting pro—but miss jenny is for sure a master! i just know you’re going to love this post. take it away lady freckle!

hiya there MODERN KIDDO readers! it’s me, jenny again! just in case you missed my vintage book guest post, I run a fun blog + shop called frecklewonder and a brand new shop for the little set called kidwonder!

I looove thrifting. as a mama of two, the “How Do You Do It?” question comes up enough that i thought it might be fun to share my own tips on Thrifting With Kids. and it just hit me, as i was thinking about all this that i’ve got a solid 9 years of this under my belt now. which is just kind of, wow. that’s A LOT of trips in the thrifts with the kids. hundreds. (thousands? oh my.) on average, i hit ‘em 4 times a week. 2 or 3 mornings will cover most of my closest shops, and then i usually treat myself to one trip in the evening, BY MYSELF. and FYI, i *never* go on the weekends. way to0 busy for my comfort level. anyhow, here’s what works for us:

1. REST. number 1 most important rule of all: make sure your kiddo is WELL RESTED. i never, EVER hit the thrift with a sleepy kid. it won’t work. you will be frustrated, your kid will be having a meltdown and people will be giving you the stink eye. you will leave with nothing but frazzled nerves, and let’s face it- that’s not what you left the house for. time your thrift runs for when your kiddo is alert and in a good mood. cause honey, thrifting does not equal stress. not in my book.

2. SNACKS. snacks are a must. if you have smaller kid who will be riding in the cart be sure to stick a little bottle of water + a cup of something to snack on into your bag before you leave the house. i always bring a cereal bar or a little cup of crackers or goldfish pretzels for dotty and it keeps her happy + gives me a chance to really comb my way through the racks. if your kiddo is too big to fit in the cart, make it a treat and pick up a couple milkshakes beforehand! henry and i used to go to this 50s diner when we’d do a weekly thrift run in a different town. he was 4 or 5 at the time, and it was easy to make the “stay where i can see you” rule, and usually he’d just toodle along with me sipping his milkshake, chatting, happy as can be. he’s almost 9 now, and he doesn’t thrift with me nearly as much as he did when he was younger (mostly because i go during school hours) and yes, occasionally he groans about “popping in” with me, BUT, he also knows that some of his best scores that he treasures most have come from thrift stores. henry knows the value in just popping in, because You Never Know What You’re Going To Find (i coined that phrase, thankyouverymuch). and one day, you just might find a HUGE bag of some kid’s entire lego collection for $1.85. and you will bow down to the thrift gods and you will get up and do The Happy Dance. which we did, and we’ve had more than our share of experiences like that, but i digress…

sometimes you have to get creative, and turn the lid of your sigg bottle into a miniature cup because you forgot the mini water bottle. and you might find yourself having to stop every 6 steps to refill said miniature cup, and you might feel like you only get to surf past a half dozen shirts before said refill, but guess what?

it works!

and your kiddo is happy!

really, really happy.

3. BOOKS. another thing i grab before we head out the door is a couple of board books. sure, by this time, with the snacks, the bottles of water, the wipes, the diapers, plus all my own personal crap, i’m starting to feel like a pack mule when i’m only leaving the house for a couple hours, but TRUST ME. these things really make for your best chance at a successful trip. but if you forget the books, don’t fret! you can always grab a book or two from the kid’s book bin, and just toss it back in when you’re done. i mean, it’s a thrift store, you know?! it’s been read before! what’s one more time?! sometimes dotty will bring along something else like a couple of buddies (stuffed animals) or recently, she’s got this leap pad alphabet caterpillar thing-a-ma-abob that she likes to bring. all of these things serve as good entertainment. and an entertained kid equals a happy kid. and a happy kid equals a happy mama. so it’s win-win.

4. BE CREATIVE. when the other tricks are all used up, do something else! if you’re shopping with a toddler, hand ‘em a shirt and say, “hey! can you practice doing these buttons for me?!”

or, “hey! wanna look in mama’s purse for something?!” lately that one gets a big YEAH! from dotty, because she is pretty obsessed with “mama soft” right now. girlfriend will sit there in a dream like state for 15 minutes, just rubbing chap stick on her lips.

5. HAVE FUN. really! don’t be afraid to be silly. you can pretty much count on a thrift store to have some rockin’ tunes (oldies, crazy country, classic rock) and guess what? we dance like no one’s watching. we sing like no one’s listening. we make funny faces. we talk. we laugh. we just have a good time.

and in the end, isn’t that what it’s all about? :)

so there you have it. simple stuff, really. but i find that it works for me every time. give it a try. and HAPPY THRIFTING! xo Jenny

Quick Cookin’ with Shutterbean :: Tasty Fruit Dippers

ALOHA AGAIN! This isn’t really a Guest Post, since Miss Shutterbean is a part of the Kiddo family, but the gracious and sassy Tracy whipped together a most scrumptious (and EASY!) snackers for you guys. It’s so warm and balmy over here I have been craving this in a BIG WAY! Take it away Tracy!

Hello! Shutterbean here. I just gotta say that I’m sooo jealous of Alix and her Hawaiian trip! I want to be drinking pina coladas in the sun with a stack of trashy magazines right now! Mmmmmm Hawaii! Today I’ve got pineapple on the brain. Must be all that Hawaiian daydreaming! I’ve whipped up a little snack inspired by Alix’s getaway for you and your kiddos!  Won’t you join me?

Isn’t it funny how you can remember certain food related things from your childhood? When I was little, I was a Brownie. Remember Girl Scouts?? My mom was the den mother and she was in charge of bringing healthy/delicious snacks for us girls every week. One week she made fruit kebabs with a tasty lime yogurt dip and I was totally stupefied. I had no idea that my mom had this in her bag of tricks since I never had it at home before! I remember demolishing a few sticks and my mom being proud! I still haven’t forgotten that moment…

So let’s talk about snacks & kids for a second. Fruit on a stick! It’s a brilliant idea isn’t it? It’s fun, portable and the combinations are endless! Your little one doesn’t like pineapples but loves grapes? Sub them! Not sure if they will actually like them? Have them help you with a batch! It’s fun piercing fruit with sticks! Just be careful with the sharp pointy edges.

Let’s get started with our Lime Yogurt Dip!  Here it is!

Gather your simple ingredients. Yogurt, brown sugar, lime zest & lime juice.

We’re having an ingredient party and you’re invited!

Mix the dip together and take a little sample…

Dip Away!

I guarantee these fruit kebabs will be a treat your kids never forget!

Lime Yogurt Dip:

– 1 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt
– 3 tablespoons brown sugar (use more if you want it sweeter)
– A small squeeze of lime juice
– 1/4 teaspoon lime zest

Stir all of the ingredients together in a small bowl. Let mixture sit for 5 minutes and then serve with your fruit kebabs!

Guest Post: Small for Big!

Hi hi everyone!

We have a super special guest blogger here today at MK headquarters, the wonderful Mari from Small for Big, a peach of a blog about the coolest and grooviest kiddo stuff around! She was also chosen as one of the Best Design Blogs for Mom on Babble.  When she’s not cuddling her very snuggable sweet daughter, she is an amazing toy designer!  Talk about dream job! And she was sweet enough to guest blog for us about some of her favorite vintage-inspired finds at the recent ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas last month!

So, without further ado, take it away, Mari!

* * * * * * * * *

I’m thrilled to be a guest here at Modern Kiddo! Dottie and Alix’s sense of style is just like mine: modern and vintage all mish mashed together. I wanted to bring you a snippet of some of my favorite finds from the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. And, of course, we’re focusing on things that are modern and vintage-inspired! You can also visit me at my blog, Small for Big, for more coverage of the show – one of the biggest in the kids product industry (and believe me I know, I walked every inch of it!)

Little Nest

I almost came home with some of these chairs, but decided to be good since my house is packed to the brim. But maybe one of these mid-century mod masterpieces could be your child’s new throne?

The Mother Company

The video I’ve seen for this new company is filled with the sweetest things. It’s like a modern, quirky female Mr. Rogers and her quirky vintage friends. The adorable snail and Ladybug are available as plush too.

Olli & Lime

All of their luscious crib bedding has a retro vibe, but my favorite has got to be the egg crib set – those stripes are calling my name (whether it’s a boy or girl!)

Puj Booti

These booties somehow make me think of Sweden in the 70’s. I can’t tell you why, just a gut reaction. But it’s a good thing, and I’m planning on jamming my toddlers toes into a pair when they arrive in January. (and the shoes are “uni-foot” – they fit on either one!)

Manny & Simon

Simple wooden wheeled animals and rockers bring yesteryear to this year with brightly colored palettes and simple silhouettes.

Decaf Plush

Decaf Plush creates hand-appliqued felt details on dresses, hoodies, clothing and accessories. The color and pattern combos are outstanding – and you can even choose your own custom combo if you’d like.

Turtle Monkey Bug

I love seeing small companies that are broadening their horizons beyond etsy – handmade deserves to be in every retail shop. Each of these doll features it’s own unique hand-painted face.

Stuf – Wry Baby

There are several introductions to Wry Baby’s new line of plush called Stuf. If you’re smart (like me, of course) you’ll collect every single one.

Jasper Hearts Wren

The new dresses in this line are perfect – look at that high fashion exposed zipper detailing!

Skip Hop

Though Skip Hop is unabashedly modern in their styling, their expanding line of toys and accessories are looking back. The new line (coming soon) features lots of vintage patterns and colors, and these owl bookends are so on trend.

Zooni

These knit hats are definitely both retro and modern – and the fuzzy wuzzy jolly roger hat is a must for the little boys in your life!

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Squee!!!

How cool is that? I know, right? I’m jonesing for one of those ladybug dolls.  Oh that antenna-y goodness of it all! So much cuteness, so little time! And those owl bookend? I’m dying.  And don’t even get me started on that navy dress.  ME WANT!

But really, this is just the tip of the iceberg of the awesomeness that is Mari! Seriously, you should sashay on over to her bloggie, Small for Big right now and see the cuteness that is Wren. Hopefully you’ll see more of Miss Wren in the near future as a Weekly Kiddo.

OK, I just have to share one picture of little Birdie with you.

Oh, the glasses of it all. I’m in love!

Guest Post :: Quick Cookin' with Shutterbean Mexican Stir Fry

Oooh lalala! Ring the dinner bell friends, it’s time for Quick Cookin with Tracy of Shutterbean. Tracy is not only an amazing cook, she is a very clever cook! Her meals are not only supremely tasty they are always deliciously simple—perfect for busy folks, whether you have kiddos or not. Hit it, Tracy!

Hi friends! Tracy here with another easy peasy dish for you and your family to enjoy.

Have you heard of Soyrizo? It’s soy version of chorizo and it’s totally fabulous! It’s got the taste & texture of spicy chorizo, but there’s no meat involved! My husband is a huge fan of the stuff even though he’s a big meat eater. Sometimes I serve it alongside our eggs and toast or I mix it up with breakfast potatoes! Most of the time I just use it to make this quick Mexican Stir Fry. My boys love it.

I’m always trying to find a way to get my son Cooper to eat vegetables, and this dish does a good job of masking some! In this rendition, there’s corn, tomatoes and green peppers. There’s also a dose of protein & fiber from beans & brown rice. The soyrizo has all the spices you need so nothing really needs to be added, making it super easy to make. The leftovers are fantastic. Throw some in a cheesy quesadilla or add it to a burrito or taco! I like to eat what’s leftover the next day with some avocado chunks and a few dashes of hot sauce on top!

This is what it looks like fresh off the stove:

I like to make a little “toppings” bar so you we all can customize our own plate!

My boyz LOVE it.

p.s—This is what soyrizo looks like! I usually get mine from Trader Joe’s!

p.p.s.— It looks like a long sausage- shaped like a big U. You need to make sure you don’t cook the “skin” as it’s plastic! Just cut off the ends and *squeeze* it out into the skillet.

Mexican Stir Fry
Ingredients:
-1 package soyrizo
-1 medium onion, chopped
-1 15 oz. can black beans, rinsed
-1 cup frozen corn
-2 bell peppers, chopped (use any color you like)
-2 cups cooked brown rice

In a deep skillet on medium high heat, add soyrizo & onions. Cook for a few minutes until the onions start becoming translucent. Add in the frozen corn & bell peppers and cook for another 3-5 minutes. Add your black beans and brown rice and heat through. It’s really good if you can almost brown/char some of the soyrizo! It adds a nice texture to it! Serve with you favorite toppings!

Fun Toppings:
-avocado slices
-sour cream
-chopped tomatoes
-cilantro
-shredded cheese
-green onions
-tortilla chips
-salsa
-hot sauce!

This recipe is just a base. If you like more corn, add more corn! Not a fan of black beans? Add pinto! Have some leftover sweet potatoes? Throw them in! I must warn you that the soyrizo is on the spicier side. If your children or significant other is sensitive to spice, then you might wanna opt out of this recipe 😉 You could also just add some pureed sweet potatoes to help balance the spice! Fortunately, my son Cooper LOOOVES spicy stuff. He goes totally apey when I make this. He calls it “Spicy Rice!” I guess the apple doesn’t fall from the tree!

————————————–
Thank you so much Tracy for another super yum yum dish. I can vouch for the fact that soyrizo is TASTE-TEE!!! Oh, and that little cutie in the background (aka The Spicy Wonder!) is Tracy’s mega cute boy Cooper. Coop has been Weekly Kiddo before and I think you’ll agree he is adorable. Check him out here.

Guest Post: Pilgrim Lee of Draw! Pilgrim

Hi gang! I’m just back in from Prague…we had a spectacular time. It’s so good to be home, but I do miss that pretty city. As you guys know, we usually do our Weekly Kiddo on Fridays, but I’m CRAZY jet lagged (we had a 4am pick up at our hotel. D-Y-I-N-G). My fabulous friend Pilgrim has graciously offered up a fantastic Guest Post to help me out. THANK YOU lovely Pilgrim! We have been so lucky to have such a cool collection of Guest Bloggers over here! And never fear, Weekly Kiddo will be back in full force next week. I have some super kiddos in the works. xo Alix

hello modern kiddo readers! this is pilgrim and i’m honoured to be guest posting for modern kiddo today. while alix is off galavanting around Prague, i thought it would be fun to show you around my son donovan’s bedroom. donovan’s room had an upgrade earlier this year to celebrate his move from baby guy to fully fledged kiddo and i’ll share some of my decorating tips with you. first, what did his room look like before?

it was a very nice calm and minimal baby’s room. i went with an aqua, lime, and orange palette largely inspired by the rug you see. the changing table was the same one i was changed on when i was a baby, and it was made by my great grandfather during the depression (from orange crates). don’t worry, the cabinet has been moved into another room where it will take on its seventh life as a guitar bench. so what does the room look like now?

TA-DA! working from left to right we have: ikea storage ‘bins’ holding toys and supplies (painted in nippon paints ‘bamboo’ color), a secondhand sideboard scored from my friend’s shop (the top was pretty rough so it got a lick of paint – ‘satsuma’ by nippon paint, to be precise), the print on the wall above the sideboard is by shinzi katoh, and the smaller print on the wall is ‘gama go’s critter boat’ by tim biskup.

the bed was the first ‘new’ thing i bought. i found it in a thrift store and thought it was such a sweet, perfect ‘first proper bed’. from that point i put the room together really gradually. i think this is important when creating a room because its not something you should be redoing too often so it deserves consideration. having said that, i don’t like rooms that look as though they’re arrived fully formed. there needs to be room for growth and general ‘living’ in rooms – after all, none of us live in a catalog or magazine spread! the way i worked the room out was by having a folder on my desktop and a photoshop file that i used as a digital mood board. i took photos of what we already had (the prints, the clock, the chair) and then worked out a palette and ‘theme’ (i was inspired by the yellowing colorful illustrations in vintage kid’s encyclopedias) and then added the other furniture as i discovered it. i would search very generally on etsy and ebay for fabrics etc using very general terms that fit my theme, eg ‘vintage woodland,’ and if i found something intriguing i’d drag the pictures into my mood board to see if they worked. it was just trial and error and patience and some luck too. i enjoy putting rooms together so much, and this was such a special project. i adored my bedrooms growing up, and i wanted this extra special first ‘big kid’ room to be as fun and cute as it was functional. storage was an extra special consideration seeing as previously all the toys had lived in our lounge room!

so after i worked out i was going for a vintage woodland, nature kinda theme, i could not believe it when i found this sheet on etsy! its a smokey the bear single sheet, in great condition, that i’ve turned into a duvet cover. its got that lovely soft vintage sheet feeling, but i sewed it to a new plain white sheet to give it some extra thickness . i still can’t believe my luck! my son loves pointing out the animals on the sheet and reading all the fire safety messages. the cushions are ‘orla kiely for target’ napkins set i picked up on ebay. the colors and the cross-hatched pattern really work with the vintage illustration style of the smokey sheet, don’t you think? i think regardless of what room you’re decorating in it’s important to think laterally and be creative about the things you use. napkins can be cushion covers, tea towels make sweet curtains and furniture can serve several purposes.

for example, my sons’s clothing and some games etc now live in a secondhand sideboard. the sideboard was a real score. my friend was closing down her shop to set off on a world adventure, and so i kindly offered to relieve her of her shop counter, and here it is! a freshly painted top, and a new lease on life. being flexible with how you use furniture can make thrifting a viable decorating option, and i think in this room’s case it’s a piece of furniture my son can grow with. here is one of my woodland patchwork prints in its natural habitat! also pictured is a leaf print by ubiki, from etsy.

the bedtime story chair has a very new and lovely cushion on it from arthur’s circus! the chair and the bed frame are both painted in nippon paint’s ‘wainscot’ color. its a nice, very 70s brown. the chair was one of my grandma’s kitchen chairs, so its really cool that it gets such an important role in this room.

and finally, on the wall at the foot of the bed, by the doorway, we have a little cluster of art wall goodness. a collection of printe from the dreamy lab partners, as well as the matte stephens ‘bear monster’ print, frame the ‘moon in my room’ light. father christmas brought my son the moon last december and so every night we check out what phase the moon is in, and adjust the light accordingly. it makes a really pretty nightlight and educational tool.

as i mentioned, a lot of the things we already had around the house, and the other furniture brought in is half ikea, half secondhand, so i’m quite happy with the thriftiness vs practicalness balance.

and there we have it: from nursery to four years old! my son loves his room and even after a couple of months of it being all set up he’s still thrilled to have a room of his own with character and interest, and that’s the big triumph for me.
