Real Life Time Machine :: Alix’s 1970s Christmas

Greetings from Michigan! I’m a little bummed to report that there is NO SNOW! And here we packed allll these mittens and scarves and snow pants. Ah well! It’s really fun to be back home with the family. Christmas has always been a special holiday for us, and my mom has always decorated the house awesomely. I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to make it back this year (airline prices are sky high, especially for a family— it’s so sad) but working a little extra harder and taking on some additional freelance work this week, we were able to make it happen!

Since I love to share vintage photos, I thought it would be fun to share some of my own “retro” holiday pics. It’s a random assortment of photos—most of the albums back home in Michigan at my parents’ house—but here are a handful of my memories!

We start in San Diego, California. That’s where I was born. We lived there til I was in the second grade and then we moved to Michigan. Aww, look it’s little me and my pretty mama:

In these photos I’m wearing an awesome hot pink knit dress that was hand made by my Tante Judy (my godmother), who was super crafty. I believe we are at my grandma’s house here. On the left is my Uncle John and my cousin Lisa.

I’m pretty sure this next one is the same year, but at our own apartment at the University of California, San Diego married student housing. That tinsel is very German—although I noticed it on the tree at my grandma’s house (in the first photo), so maybe it was popular in general in the 70s. Do you remember tinsel on your tree back in the day?? I rarely see it on trees any more. My sweet friend Lishy Loo sent me a few packs last year!

In the background you can see my Top Favorite Christmas Album of All Time—The Jackson 5 Christmas Album. We still have it and I listen to it every year! Michael Jackson singing “Up On the Housetop” is my all-time favorite.

Christmas morning, my first little desk! I loved that awesome dolly carriage in the background too. Let’s get a closer look:

See? Told ya I was smitten with my carriage! It looks like the one in my Sears Catalog post. This is later in the day, and I’m all dolled up. Check out the cool Playskool giraffe in the background. I sooo wanted one of those for Wolfie when he was little!

I got the shutterbug early! Here I am with my little Fisher-Price Camera.

I love this next photo. My mom looks like a modern day hipster here, with her groovy fur hat and cool coat. I’m holding Pinkie, my little pink elephant. My godmother (she of the craft hand-knit pink dress) made him for me and he had these amazing psychedelic fabric ears. We’re at Balboa Park in San Diego.

My mom has great style and I have always loved the little outfits she dressed me in—check out these red velveteen overalls with the heart bib! I even had red hearts on my lil blue suede shoes.

I have to confess though, I was such a girlie girl I hated to wear pants. I was allll about the dresses. In fact, my mom reminded me, “It was SO hard to get you into that little outfit!” I do seem to remember that I was pleased by the red velvet trim on my ruffly shirt. Hmmm. OK, here we are at my Tante Anneliese’s house (my mom’s sister).

The year was 1973, and I got a little red headed Blythe doll AND the Barbie townhouse. Twas an excellent year of presents for wee Alexandra! Those are my three cousins in the back Danny, Rudi and Jimmy. Danny and Rudi were rockin’ the long California Boy hair.

After we went to Tante Anneliese’s house we would scoot over to my grandma’s house (my dad’s mom). Here we are. And oooh look what I just noticed is in my hand:

EMERALD THE WITCH! Remember, from my Creepy Cool Dollies post?? I was fairly certain I had an Emerald doll, but honestly thought it might just be wishful thinking. Proof positive I had her!

OK, now we travel across the country to Flint, Michigan. This is Christmas Eve, which we always celebrated with a night of music/singing and some tasty little finger foods. We also got to open up presents that were sent to us from relatives (packages from Germany and California).

Look how adorable my mom is in her plaid, maxi dress—there are strawberries appliques on the collar. Cuteness! That chair on the left was from a little kinder set my folks picked up in German (it had a matching table that  believe we are using as a small buffet!). The table and chairs were covered in a cool vinyl/plastic that had hot pink, red and orange flowers on them. The best part was (Dottie, are you listening??) I HAD MATCHING CLOGS! Oh yeah…..

These pictures totally make me smile. Check out how fun my parents are cuttin’ a rug Christmas eve! I look at our little house and there’s hardly any furniture. My dad was a young college professor and it’s not like he made a bundle, but as kids we were never aware that times might have been tight here and there. My parents are awesome.

This is my brother Karl opening up his big present that year…a drum set!

And finally, this is my mom with our dog Flockie (loosely translated it means “little snowflake” in German). I always loved this photo of her. She is wearing a velveteen gaucho suit, with a velveteen vest. I remember thinking she looked so glamorous with her Charlie’s Angels hair! I was always very pleased and proud that I had a “pretty mama”. Growing up in Michigan in the 70s, most of the mom’s wore polyester stretch pants and had androgynous short hair cuts. Not my mom. My mama had style!

So that’s my little trip down memory lane. I’ll have to try and get some more photos scanned. It’s so fun to peek at the past.

And finally…..did you download my Retro Holiday Music Mixes?? What did you think? (YES i’m totally fishing for compliments, haha…..) I’m still plotting this week’s mix, so you’ll have another round of tasty vintage tunes to play while you are puttering around the house these final days!

…but the fire is so delightful.

I know to you east coasters, our weather is positively balmy out here….BUT we’ve been dipping into the 30s and low 40s that’s preeettty chilly to me. That being said, we’ve had a busy and fun winter, with lots of holiday tunes, fires, reading stories on the couch and indulging in Creme Brulee lattes (which aren’t really coffee, they’re more like a tasty dessert….but oh how shummy).

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO FRONT TEETH

Somebody lost a toof…and then another one! I didn’t think Wolfie could get any more awesome, but the missing teeth are pretty darn cute. I told him how I lost MY two front teeth in first grade around the exact same time…and when we had our school Christmas Pagent we sang “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” and the teacher made me stand front and center. Wolfie was appalled….not by my story, but by the SONG. “But mama…I don’t want to get my TEETH for Christmas!” hee. I assured him it was just a song.

WALKS WITH SAM

I’ve been meaning to write an update on our Samson (aka Sam, Sammy, Sam Bone). For those who missed it, he was our fabulous, leggy pound puppy. He’s just terrific. He’s the handsomest, sweetest dog around. His fur is growing in beautifully and he has put on some weight. Everyone who sees him falls in love. Greg takes him to the red woods almost every day, and on the weekends we like to go to Point Isabel, which is one of the largest off leash dog parks in the country. It’s so pretty, and Sam loves it.

BUYING OUR TREE

You’ve already seen our holiday mania around the house….I can’t remember if I mentioned we got our treeeee last weekend . We have a vintage silver aluminum one that we love, but I have to say nothing beats the smell of fresh evergreen. So we got a real one (not flocked, Wolfie is just standing in front of them!).

We trimmed the tree and watched our favorite holiday special, Year Without a Santa Claus. Snow Miser and Heat Miser get me every time!

LIPSTICK OBSESSIONS

OK, this has nothing to do with winter or the holidays, but I had to share on of my new fave lipsticks— Revlon Lip Butter. Lip Butters are taking the beauty world by storm. They are packed full of great stuff like mango and shea butter, so they keep  your lips extremely soft…but the colors are much deeper than a colored lip balm. It’s like Burts Bees and MAC had a baby! Kinda. There are TONS of colors—popsicle reds, fun pinks, bronzey nudes. Some sheer. Some bold. And they’re only $7 a pop. They make your lips look nice a dewy. Go get some! [good colors: candy apple and cherry tart for pretty reds, lollipop and raspberry pie for sassy pinks, red velvet and berry smoothie for plum…oh and tutti frutti for a peachie orange that seems great for sunny days]

TRYING ARCHERY!

We love exposing Wolfie to new things. Some of them we have to gently urge him to do (like going to see Annie a few weeks ago—he wasn’t sure about that! But they had a real live dog as Sandy and he was pretty into that!). Many times Wolfie comes up with the new thing he wants to try. On one of our redwood walks with Sammy we passed an archery range. It was all grown ups and Wolfie was pretty transfixed (having just devoured The Hunger Games trilogy over the summer, I admit I was too). Greg found out that the San Francisco Archery Club allows younger kids to try their hand on a special side range. I have to say he did really well! He had the stance down pat. If you look closely you can see that his little face is all screwed up in concentration.

And today is Friday which means another busy bee weekend! We have lots to do before we head to snowy Michigan for the holidays. How about you guys? Are your weekends action packed too? Did you get your tree yet (if you’re getting one?). Oh, I’m almost done with Mix #3! I’m hoping it will go up today, but if not, for sure this weekend!

Vintage Holiday Decorations Make Me Happy.

The holidays are one of my favorite times to go thrifting! There are treasures galore and nothing makes me happier than finding little vintage Christmas goodies. They are so playful and colorful. A few weeks ago I went on a big ol thrifting binge and scooped up some fun items to add to my holiday collection.

Most thrifts have a big ol area set up for “seasonal” goodies and while lots of thrift stores are getting picked over, I find that holiday decor and what not is always plentiful! Things I love to look for: vintage ornaments (Shiny Brites! they have the cutest boxes, but you have to look carefully to make sure they aren’t too faded or chipped), little holiday animals, sitting elves, ceramic holiday figurines from the 60s and 70s, dishware, linens (i found a great runner and some cute table cloths!), lawn decor (yes it’s true! Greg scored some amazing vintage lawn decorations a few years ago) and then, of course, Holiday RECORDS!

I’m obsessed with little Dream Pet reinsdeer. They’re so cute! I found all three of these golden horned  fellas at the same time. The front deer (who has golden eye lashes, thank you very much) was found last week!

This little fella is a moose who lost his antlers, but I still think he’s a cutie. He came from an estate sale….

These glasses are so fun. I don’t have all 12 Days of Christmas—we still need Two Turtle Doves and Ten Ladies Dancing! I didn’t snap photos, but i also have some fun holiday tumblers (perfect for egg nog and cocktails!)

This little cutie is the source of debate over here. Wolfie likes a proper star on the top of the tree. I think she is pretty awesome. But I don’t want to impose my taste on the entire family ALL the time (just most of the time, heh….). So when he informed me that this year was a STAR year, I sadly packed her back up. I feel like last year we did the star too…hmmm.

Have you been finding some fun vintage holiday goodies for your house? Or have you done a vintage holiday post yourself?  Add the link in the comments so we can see! I’d just love to see some of your favorite Christmas treasures!

PS

I wanted to include one of those little widgets so your blog links would be right at the end of the post, rather than in comments. But the one i found was super complicated. Anyone here used one that they could recommend??

She’s baaack!

Last year I was doing a little e-thriftin’ on eBay and I stumbled upon this cutie. I was stunned. A little caterpillar holiday girl?? Er…..at least that’s what I THINK she is. I kind of had to have her. But I forgot to bid and the auction ended. She hadn’t sold (apparently “Vintage Holiday Caterpillar Glitter Girl” isn’t a big search term). I posted her picture here and ya’ll went bananas saying “YOU MUST GET HER!” So I wrote the seller and VOILA! She was mine.

She’s so weirdly wonderful….I have no idea what they were thinking when they created her. She has a little hanging cord, so I assume she is supposed to be an ornament. Either way I’m excited to have her as part of my little holiday gang!

Pssst! I did a search for Vintage Christmas Caterpillar on ebay…..and there’s actually one on there! See?

We went to the most amazing vintage holiday sale

So our fabulous friend Karen has an equally fabulous friend named Enid. And Enid puts every other vintage collector I know to shame. Her awesome 1950s home is quite literally packed to the rafters with treasures you can’t even imagine.

You know, things like a spectacular Marlin hanging on the living room wall. And crazy cool lamps. And mid-century, two-sided fireplace. And groovy paintings. And 50s dishware. And a library FILLED with vintage books and pulp novels. And her enid collins hand bag collection. And her lucite bag collection. And enamel daisy pins. And vintage bowling goodies. And vintage suitcases. And SOCK MONKEYS. I could go on forever. People this place is insanity. Amazing. Overwhelming. Gorgeous eye candy EVERYWHERE. Miss Enid has a wonderful eye.

Enid calls it The Ugh House and the story behind the name is really great. It was originally built in 1953 by Ed & Ella Baugh. Somehow the “B” and the “A” fell off the sign and thus it was rechristened!

As hard as it is to part with treasures, when you have TOO much stuff, the goodies don’t really have a chance to shine. So the lovely Ms. Enid decided she  needed to start purging just a little bit. She’s already had a big garage sale, but this weekend she had something extra special. It was an ALL VINTAGE HOLIDAY sale….and friends, it was SO awesome! Not only drinkies and snackies, but amazing decor AND the cool stash she was selling, made for a wonderful afternoon!

There were so many amazing things. There were elves and reindeer and santas. Wrapping accoutrements, holiday themed cups and glasses, wall hangings, angels, tree toppers and of course loads of ornaments—in boxes and displayed on a shiny silver tree. It was pretty damn magical.

I was obsessed with the packaging on everything. The Fashion Flower bow?? Wow.

Yes. Made by the dwarves of the black forest. Brilliant.

Dottie and I were two ships that passed in the night that day, but we both went and scooped up some awesome goodies. We passed on a lot of amazing things too. For example:

Here are some of the goodies I scooped up. I love all the little figural characters, but those jewel ornaments were my favorites of the day:

These New Year’s Party Hats were pretty fantastic too.

All in all, we had a blast! I have a “no xmas decorations til after Thanksgiving” rule, but then I go full blast into holiday mode. I love Thanksgiving but truly, I think I love it because it gets me THAT much closer to Christmas.
