MK Giveaway: Gingiber!

Surely you know Gingiber, right?

You know, that darling Etsy store that makes everyone smile with its cute owls and sunny disposition? Well, Miss Stacie Bloomfield, the master maven behind Gingiber is kindly offering up THIS bit of goodness for this week’s Modern Kiddo Giveaway!  One of your fabulous reindeer Christmas stockings. In pink no less. Squee!!!  Great for anyone–I love a boy that can rock pink!  Perfect for the holidays, wouldn’t you say?

But before we get into the deets on this giveaway, let’s chat a bit with our new-found friend, Miss Stacie.  I invited her by the Modern Kiddo camp for some fire-side e-chatting about craftiness, being a crafty mom and her inspiration. Here’s what she said:

Modern Kiddo: How long have you been crafty?

Stacie Bloomfield: Ever since I could hold a pencil, I have been drawing. If I had crayons, I would stay busy for hours (which made my parents very happy). And I was probably the only 10 year old who wanted a Martha Stewart Magazine Subscription for Christmas. I love making and being inspired by beautiful things!

MK: Somewhere out there Martha Stewart smiled!  What inspired you to start your own Etsy store?

SB: Once upon a time, I graduated from college with an Art Degree. I then pursued a promising career as a Starbucks Barista, all the while trying to figure out how to use my skills to pay the bills. Finally, one day after an exceptionally caffeinated shift at work, I got up the nerve to open my own Etsy Shop, listing some nursery doodles I had made for my young daughter. Using the monkier “Gingiber” (a name that I came up with for a college design project) I happily listed doodle upon doodle onto my very own etsy shop. And I have never been happier!

MK: Ha! Ha!  I’m sure Starbucks misses you, but I think the crafting world needs more people like you in it.  How do you find time to run your business and be a Mom to your little cutie patootie?

SB: Well, I no longer work at Starbucks Coffee Company. I now work a much less time consuming day job at a local university. I generally get most of my Gingiber done after my daughter goes to bed around 7 pm, and on the weekends, when my sweet husband will allow me several hours of uninterrupted creative time. And, I tend to be constantly doodling in the margins of notes or on napkins during lunch, so I feel like I am constantly coming up with new ideas!

MK: Whoa–working plus kiddo plus side crafty business? Hmm… perhaps the caffiene is necessary still.  What are you most excited about for the holidays?

SB: I am so excited that my 2 year old daughter, Violet, is so excited about Christmas! We just put up the Christmas Tree, and she loves to stare at it and say, “Pretty, Mommy!” She cannot help but touch a few Christmas ornaments every time she passes by the tree. There is nothing greater than making sweet little holiday memories with your children.

Stacie, I totally agree about the holiday memories and I hope your wonderful stocking becomes part of some kiddo’s future holiday memories.

  1. Too many to name from my child hood but what really sticks out is the big sleepy smile on my Moms face when I saw my stocking and presents. I can feel that same smile on my face when I watch my kids.

  2. One of my favorite holiday memories is cutting daily links off a construction paper advent calendar that my momma made for us every year. We got to do whatever fun activity was written inside it, like making sugar cookies or watching Charlie Brown’s Christmas. Cheap entertainment at it’s finest!

  3. Her things are divine! I am so excited to learn about her and would love the chance to win the cute stocking 🙂
One of my fave memories as a child was putting together the retro fab xmas tree. The end of each metal branch was color coated so it was so fun to get to toss the branches into color coated piles and then assemble the tree. I think about it every Xmas and how much I loved that old fake tree 🙂

  4. I think my favorite memory is walking down stairs on christmas morning and seeing santas foot prints in the carpet.:) My dad was crazy…..awww a great memory.:)

  5. My favorite holiday memory is from the year I taught in Asia. Not much going on over there for Christmas, but chilling on a tiny island beach in Thailand was certainly the most relaxing Christmas I have had!

  6. Stacie, HA! You weren’t the only 10 yr old enamored with Martha! My Mom found out she was coming to speak at a Southern Women’s show when I was 10 and I insisted on going. Much to my surprise, as she was walking to her seat, she walked right past me so I said, “Hello, Ms. Stewart!” She stopped and stared at me blankly and then walked on without replying! Broke my little 10 yr old heart but it didn’t deter me from loving her style! LOL!
OK, that’s not my memory! My earliest memory of Christmas was decorating when I was about 4. I remember my Mom handing me the retro little fat snowman candle & letting me choose where it was going to go (I chose on top of the TV) I remember the Christmas music blaring and it being so festive. I sat down to go through the ornaments & when I stood up, my legs were “asleep” but I didn’t know what it was called so I was telling my Mom that it felt like ants were crawling all over my legs! She thought that was so funny!

  7. My favorite holiday memory is snow on Christmas morning in Scotland. I live in California where it is almost always sunny and warm on Christmas, so it was a treat to wake up to snow for the first time. I think I was 21 years old!

  8. My favorite Holiday tradition was, and still is baking just gobs of cookies and cakes. My grandmother used to put me in her amazing vintage aprons and up on a stool, and let me mix and measure and make cookie cutouts. The whole house would smell devine! Now, I do the same thing with my 2 year old and 9 year old, all of us in those SAME aprons…cookies, breads, cakes and pies! We started it today, and when I got out those old aprons this time, I had tears in my eyes, wishing she could be here to see those kiddos enjoying what she taught me so well!

  9. My fav Christmas memory is how my family opens Christmas presents: not all at once but one at a time starting from the youngest child to the oldest adult each taking a turn until they were all opened- made the moment last. So wonderful!

  10. I love christmas morning, the quiet peacefulness while the house is still asleep, then sneaking down the stairs to see the beautiful tree with tons of presents underneath it, and stockings full of little packages. I love it – its still magical every year!

  11. Ooh! I love Gingiber, and I”m always looking for better stockings.
    The Xmas kind of course.
Fave memory is sort of a hodge-podge of all the treks across our frozen lake to get to the little island in the middle. Various years, various ages, all rolled into one perfect part of a little Christmas in a little teeny Minnesota town.

  12. one of my favorite holiday memories is opening one present each on Christmas Eve. All of us would gather ’round the Christmas tree and choose just ONE present each! It made the excitement for Christmas day THAT much better 🙂

Also, Christmas cookies in general are a wonderful memory!

  13. My favorite holiday memories are usually Christmas mornings when I would run to the fireplace with my siblings to see what Santa got us. Good times. 🙂

  14. Perhaps my favorite Christmas memory is the Christmas eve my dad met and I picked up a man who was sitting alone, hunched over in an empty parking lot. His name was Sandy Jackson. It didn’t take us long to figure out that he was confused and perhaps not holding a complete grip on reality. Come to find out, he had wandered out of the hospital (15 miles away) after having a car crash. He had been missing for 2 weeks and his family thought he was lying dead somewhere. With the help of local police we found out where he lived (about an hour drive from our house) and reunited Sandy and his wife just minutes before midnight.
“Merry Christmas” has held new meaning to me ever since.

  15. favorite memory….waking up at 5 am and waiting patiently for my parents to say “it was time”……than shaking like a leaf while opening my presents…… and contrary to now…….loving every present…….

  16. Christmas Memory 1: Too many, but the first one that comes to mind is when my grandpa was in charge of putting the wrapping paper in the garbage bag as we opened presents, but he decided to put it in the fireplace… except when he put too much in, the carpet started on fire.

Christmas Memory 2: This one isn’t my own memory because I was too young, but I’ve seen it in a photograph. My siblings and I are all perched on Santa’s lap and I’m wearing an amazing t-shirt that says “Born Great” on it. I’m probably two in it. I’ve decided that I’m gonna do the same with my daughter when she’s two too!

  17. Its not so much a memory as it is a partial memory and mostly story. I was 3 and my best friend got to see Santa at her house. I am told that I went to my mom and matter of factly asked why he couldn’t come to my house too if he was going to my best friends. My mom went to the only store that carried material in our small town and bought them out of red velvet. She worked super hard and made the most amazing Santa costume. She told me she had little scraps if you could call them that and used almost every inch of that material. This year will be the 25th year that he has come to my house. He now visits my kids and nieces. It is a super fun tradition. I actually remember seeing Santa that first Christmas and not wanting to wake up. When I did wake up I remember hugging him so tight and the hug he gave me back. I get so excited to share that magic with my kiddos and nieces every year.

  18. My mom enjoyed putting out Christmas decorations while we were in school. I loved the day each year when my sisters and I would open the kitchen door and start to see the familiar, lovely decorations throughout the house. That is when it started to feel like Christmas.
