Vintage Kiddo :: Retro Round Up!

Oh February! What a snowladen month you are turning out to be for the majority of the U.S. But here in the Bay Area this weekend was full of bike-rides to the Beach and trips to the park. The weather has been so wonderful that I’m even eyeing my summer shifts to wear to work? But don’t worry, we’ll be shivering in our boots come August in the Bay Area!

But I did of course have time to check out some darling vintage goodies that I’m so excited to share with you all! Let the vintage fun begin, friends!

First up, this Valentine’s Day dress of darlingness from 3 Ring Circus. With Valentines around the corner, how could I not include it, right?

Every young lad (and lass in my mind) should have their own tool chest. But only a really lucky one will get one as awesome as this from from Etsy seller, OhSydney!

Oh, this little vintage pink sweater set with pants is adorable. AND from Marshall Fields.  AND with a starting bid of $5.00! From Ebay seller, Konstandina.

I totally remember playing with these Playskool puzzles when I was a little kid. I’ve been seeing them pop up all over the place—for a lot higher prices than Frecklewonder is offering them, so snatch these goodies up while you can.

Doesn’t this little vintage jon jon make you crave summer? You have to admit that those button eyes for the crab are pure genius!  From Etsy seller, FuzzyMama.

YES! Please tell me you remember this bucket of Fisher Price awesomeness? I remember the new kid brought it into Show and Tell in second grade and let people watch a movie for a quarter during recess on the blacktop.  That kid became the Most Popular Kid in Class and made a fortune that day. That kid is probably a movie exec now.  From Etsy Vintage Arcane Home.

Oh, if I could just cram the Peach’s size size 6 extra wide foot into this gorgeous black and yellow vintage shoes from the seventies, I would. Except the police would arrest me for child abuse. I wonder if the fashion police could save me? From Ebay seller, eegnats.

You know I’m mad for plaid, but also have some fierce love for the argyle. And who wouldn’t if it’s a cute as the green and blue argyle sweater this charming you gent is rocking out.  You go, Mister! From Etsy seller, Mid-Centurecycled.

If your kids like snow and wolves, then this is the hat for them!  Who doesn’t love a good pom pom to boot! From Ebay seller, Ausable007.

You know what I love a lot? A LOT of vintage clothes. (Sorry—I couldn’t help myself. Bad puns run in my family…) These gems are usually very well priced and even if you don’t dig everthing, there is usually a true gem in it to make it worth it. Like this mushroom leisure suit. Or that great red flower dress. From Ebay seller, Sanford’s Daughter.

That’s it for today. Stay tuned for some more vintage fun later this afternoon!

Baby You Can Park My Car :: Vintage Toy Garage Fun.

One of my favorite toys of all time is the little Fisher Price garage. You may remember it from my vintage Fisher Price post last year. As I said back then, the elevator was really the best….all open-air and your Little Person perilously close to plunging to his or her death all for the sake of a parking space. So good!

What I didn’t realize was that vintage toy garages were kind of a “thing”. I discovered these adorable vintage toy garages when I was researching old doll houses, and WOW. They are so cool. They almost look like little architectural models. I think they’d be fun to play with but they are also kind of amazing to display on a book shelf. I think I’m gonna go out on a limb here and just say it—mini retro gas stations are the new globe, ya’ll. Check it out:

Pretty amazing, eh? No wonder this guy looks so pleased. Although hmmm…..I think someone forget to bring him the cars to go inside the garage.

Giveaway: Vintage Fisher Price Painting by Meredith Steele!!

As you know we are grand fans of vintage Fisher Price toys here are the Modern Kiddo HQ.  Which is why I’m super duper thrilled to bring you this wonderful giveaway from Oak-Town artist extraordinaire Meredith Steele whohas kindly offered up one of her vintage Fisher Price Little People portraits that would add a delightful snap to any nursery or er–your own bedroom/office/bathroom/you name it place cuz it is that darn-tootin’ awesome!

Meredith’s mother saved all of the Fisher Price Little People toys that Meredith played with as a little girl which are now being put through the pretend play paces by her own little four-year old daughter, Amelia.  It   reminded Meredith how adorable the toys are–and you know how those artists are–they’ll find inspiration in the darnest places.

Meredith’s favorite figure is the little blonde princess toy because it reminds her of her daughter. It is so button cute!

My favorite is the girl with the glasses!  I also love the bully–I remember him as the carnie from the vintage Ferris Wheel!

She does all sorts of lovely stuff beyond Fisher Price–putting to good use her a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA from Winthrop University. She exhibited her work throughout the Carolinas before relocating to the Bay Area in 2009. Meredith’s work is primarily figurative and she utilizes a bold palette, descriptive brushwork, and the incorporation of recycled materials.  Which is perfect for Cookie Monster portraits too…

And Meredith will begin a post teaching Art at Bentley School this fall. When she’s not working on her own paintings, she is often crafting princess castles and unicorn costumes with Miss Amelia, which is an excellent use of her time.  More of Meredith’s work can be seen on her website, www.meredithsteele.com., which I highly recommend stopping by to check out when you have a chance.

And Meredith is parting with this jaunty gem–the vintage Fisher Price doggie–for our giveaway. Three cheers for Meredith!!!
