Tiny Dancer :: Vintage Ballerina Love

Via: Kitsch and Curious

I don’t know about you, but I had one of those ballerina jewelry boxes that I loved so much. Not because I had oodles of fine jewels that needed to be protected, but of course because of the wonderous twinkly toed ballerina spinning away to a little tune.

Of course I wanted to be a ballerina.  I mean, isn’t it almost a right of passage for little girls to want to be a dancer? But I must admit I think I wanted to be a ballerina for one reason only–the fashion of it all.

Oh, if I had a dime for all the things I did because I liked the outfit. Please note that that will be a separate post on its own.

Of course there were the class photos with the other well turned out ballerinas, like these below…

I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a similar photo of myself like this…

1, 2, 3, 4.

I also remember wanting one of these ballet boxes so badly.  You can find a few on Ebay every now and then.  Here are some other cool ones.

And of course ballerinas were a great design/style theme across almost all decades.

Don’t you love this sparkly little ballerina?

Or this high relief ballerina in a frame?

Or your could start your little one’s love of ballet with a ballerina jewelry box–maybe just like the one you had as a kid.

Hee! Did you take any ballet classes as a child? Did you love it or hate it?

  1. No ballet, but I did take tap when I was a wee tot of 3. My only memory of it was desperately wanting a pink dress for the recital (the choices were pink and purple) and after EVERY girl in line before me picked a pink dress, I made a quick calculation and picked the purple!

  2. i was a twirler myself. took lessons starting in the first grade. stopped in the sixth because i was preferring to go to a friend’s house than to lessons and my mother said we could keep taking lessons, but she didn’t want to shell out for the recital costumes. what’s the point if you don’t get to wear something made out of satin at the end?

  3. I DID take Ballet when I was little, but only stuck with it for a couple of years. I desperately wanted to take Jazz and Tap classes, but my family couldn’t afford those.

It’s funny, because I just listed some Ballerina Paint by Number Art in the shop today! I love them so much I almost wanted to keep them, but they just don’t quite match the bright colors in my little one’s room.

Thanks for sharing the Vintage Ballet Goodness! I especially love that glittery one. 🙂

    1. You just posted a Ballerina Paint by Numbers piece? That is amazing! I bought two for the Peach’s room and LOVE them! I’m sure it will sell in a second!

  4. My favorite post of the year! I used to be a dancer, and I had the springy ballerina jewelry box. I still have some vintage ballerina ceramics that my mom would SOMETIMES let me hold when I was little… I would DIE every time! 🙂

  5. Oh gosh, I had a jewelry box just like that. I took ballet for a very short time but was in a recital and still have the yellow tutu with sequins down the front. I wish it still fit. I’d wear it around the house, haha!

  6. i never took ballet, but i did take tap. i still remember the super hard combo that we finished our recital with….with the B52’s “Love Shack” as our music. so not kidding! i am thinking about signing Miss Haven up for pre-ballet classes at our community center. $15 for 5 one hour sessions….YES PLEASE!!!

  7. I did. But then abandoned it for Jazz. I loved all the paraphernalia, ballet books and figurines etc and wore a chain with a ballerina charm. I was quite obsessed.

I even kept my first pair of ballet shoes and the baby space preschooler loves dressing up in them now 🙂

    Love this collection here!
