Packed Up :: Vintage Children’s Suitcases.

Via Lynne’s Lens.

With Spring Break coming up, I’m sure many people are thinking about going on some fun trips this April.  And nothing symobilizes travel as much as a suitcase!  Today’s rolling backpacks are ergonomic dreams for kids, but I still love a good vintage suitcase and have a special little place for children’s vintage suitcases in particular.  Children love stuff that is sized properly for them. So you can imagine how even more excited they’ll be when they can pack their bathing suits in their own bag.

When I was a little girl, I had this sweet canvas floral suitcase that I packed all my Health Tex dressed and Raggedy Ann into to go to my Aunt Beverly and cousin Cheryl’s pad for the night.  Man, just pulling that bag out meant fun was on the way!  And they are very popular with adults as well as kiddos today.

I love this grand vinyl one that is a sassy take on the floral pattern.

I love the round hat box style ones.  Perfect for a little one to carry all of her goodies around!

I love the suitcases that make is seem like kids are huge travelers–like this one featuring a girl who probably has more passport stamps than me!

Or just a simple traveler going to Grandmas!

I think these nautical blue ones with the anchors would be perfect for a trip to the beach, don’t you think?

the other nice thing about children’s suitcases is that they are still pretty easy to find on Etsy and Ebay, like these beauts for $40.

Definitely worth possibly collecting a few, yeah? I nice storage solution that is bright and cheery and easy for kids to use.

Did you have special suitcase when you were a little one?

  1. I’ve never commented before, but wanted to say I have a Going to Grandma’s (little red one). I still have it – it’s filled with doll clothes to be passed down. I loved that suitcase.

And I’m a relatively new reader, and was wondering if you’ve ever posted “what happened” to those old brands. Is Heath Tex still in business? When did it fold? Etc.

    1. Hi Bridget!!! OMG i’m soooo jealous you have a Going to Grandma’s suitcase!!!!! How cute! So glad you found us.

It’s funny we’ve been plotting a Health Tex post for some time now—we wore it as kids and loved it! It’s actually still in business, believe it or not!

  2. LOVE vintage luggage! When I was a flight attendant, my heart sank when they told us we had to have black luggage ONLY. Boooooooring!

I saw a homeless dude with a FANTASTIC suitcase in his shopping cart the other day, I almost made my husband pull over and offer him cash for his luggage. I controlled the urge. 🙂

    1. Hold up, “When I was a flight attendant”…..YOU WERE A FLIGHT ATTENDANT??? How cool! I’m obsessed with old airline culture (and I know you are too young for the Golden Days) but there is still something glammy to be about flying on a plane.

LOL I know what you mean about the luggage fetish. I have it too….

      1. Oh, I may be young on paper, but I have an old soul. I was based in Palm Springs, and when I would walk through those double doors into the airport and Sinatra would be playing over the loudspeakers, I felt as though I had finally died and gone to heaven! 🙂 I forced myself to make that job as glamorous as possible, I even used to wear my hear in a puffy updo, a la Bridget Bardot. It was my dream job!

    2. Could we please talk about that flight attendant you just casually pop that fab fact in there! That was my dream as a child–to be a flight attendant. Sigh!

      1. You guys are killing me! I could talk about that job ALL DAY. It was my calling, and after I’m done having kids I know I will never be able to hold a normal job after having an office in the air.

And finding thrift stores in other cities, can we say PERK?! 🙂

  3. My mother always wanted me to pack for overnight trips in a duffel bag, but I always INSISTED on using my grandmother’s old train case. I mean, hello! TRAIN CASE! Of course, then I thought it was a kid-sized suitcase!

  4. i’ve been tempted to get another of these lately.

i have one that started out as my sister’s when we were children. avocado green, hard side, has this little 70s card taped to the inside of the lid, for some reason. several years ago, i found a red vinyl suitcase at an estate sale. cutest little assymetrical zipper across the front. these are the perfect carrying case for a laptop, by the way.

  5. Oh how I love old suitcases!! These are awesome dottie, i’ve never seen the “going to grandma’s” and i’m officially coveting it!! I have some excellent pink samsonite and of course my beloved black and white flower power FASHIONAIRE! The only down side, is those damn things weigh a ton. I brought the pink ones on a Vegas Devil-Etttes trip and greg just about killed me—it weighed 500 pounds!!

  6. These are fantastic suitcases for children, for vintage these are the best I’ve seen, but for new designs I believe that the Trunki, which is essentiallykids luggage on wheels is the best, and the most fun suitcase on the market.
