It was one of my only toys as a child, and I would play with it alone for hours in my basement. It was the last thing Santa Claus brought to me before my father died when I was 6. This explains why my husband thinks my decorating is “tacky.” I thought this was the most wonderful and beautiful thing ever, even with the cardboard floors, bedspread and lounge chair, and with it being a size that no dolls of that era would fit. You just had to imagine little people living in it, just like I imagined friends, siblings, etc. Anyway, yes, it did have a lamp by the couch and a fireplace that would light up. The doorbell also rang, but mine was somehow broken (by a cousin, I think) and you had to hold it to keep it from going sideways and falling out. I loved this doll house. It was very flimsy, and always stayed in one place on a table in the basement. It also had sliding doors on the bedroom closet.

I played with it for HOURS alone in my basement while my mother was at work, or doing yard work. After seeing your post, I now realize WHY my husband thinks my decorating tastes is “tacky.” I still LOVE the house, and yes, it had a lamp by the couch that would light up, and the doorbell rang. (My cousin broke it so that it would go sideways and fall out…that was a heartbreaking day.) It was very fragile, with cardboard floor, bedspread and lounge chair. The closet doors also slid open and shut in the bedroom. There were actually no dolls back then that would fit it, so you had to imagine the little people (just like I imagined friends.) I still have this, but it is disassembled in my basement in a plastic bin.

I have Debbie’s Dream House but it’s missing the majority of the furniture and that glorious kitchen.

I am so sorry, but I feel compelled to plug the modern dollhouse I made, which was featured at Ohdeedoh this year. It works at two different scales (Japanese miniatures and Barbie), and ever since I did it I am fascinated by dollhouses. Especially the non-gingerbread/Victorian ones! Forgive the shameless plug, I think you’ll enjoy!
