3. SUPER SOCIAL HOTEL
 photo front.jpg
Hmmm. It makes sense and yet also seems totally wrong. The 1888 Hotel in Sydney, Australia is the world’s first “instagram hotel”. The name is an homage to 1888, the year Kodak launched their first camera, but the hotel is decidedly modern with special “selfie” areas and free rooms to people with 10,000 followers or more. Hmmm.  See more here.

4. SUPER FUNKY BILLBOARD

 photo NikeKnit.jpg

To celebrate their new woven knit shoe technioogy, Nike knit a Giant Shoe onto a billboard. Clever! See it here.

8. SUPER CREEPY UNDERGROUND HOME
 photo undergroundhouse_1.png

WHOA. Soooooo this is insane. Back in the 1970s an eccentric millionaire decided to build an underground bunker “just in case” of nuclear attack. Except his bunker was the perfect recreation of a 1970s suburban home, complete with faux yard and lights that can be set to “sunrise” “day,” “dusk” and “night”. Of course the night setting comes complete with twinkling stars. Is it cool or totally creepy? Check it out and decide for yourself.

Vintage Target Back in the Day.

 photo VintageTarget_1.jpg

I love Target. But I didn’t realize they had been around since the sixties! The first store opened its doors on May 1, 1962 in Roseville, Minnesota. These photos are like the Target of my dreams.

In 1968 they revamped the logo (down there on the right) to be a little more bold and iconic. It’s the logo as it stands today. I wish I could track down even more photos….it’s pretty fascinating to see, no?

TASTY BITES // brownie cookies

 photo choco_cookies.jpg

As far as we are concerned, when it comes to sweets, it doesn’t get much better than a good old fashioned cookie. A well executed cookie is a beautiful thing. It has to have just the right amount of sweetness, a touch of salt, a little crunch, and a perfectly chewy center. The best of the best are deceptively simple creations. These are the ones that have been tweaked 100’s of times until there is just the right amount of everything, while at the same time not being overly complicated. Because no one likes a fussy cookie! Often times, they are family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, and are closely guarded secrets. Mmmmmm, secrets.

Aside from being extremely well-balanced and very tasty, this recipe is barely any of the other things mentioned above. Heck, it’s barely even a cookie. Because honestly, for as much as we love cookies, we are also pretty fond of brownies. When we couldn’t decide between the two, a recipe was born.

Not a family secret. Not the culmination of 100’s attempts at perfection. Not really a cookie. Not exactly a brownie. Just chocolatey, chewy, sweet, salty, and delicious. So, if any of these things sound good to you, we think these might be just your thing! Enjoy.

 brownie cookies

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 stick butter, divided
  •  3 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 12 oz bag choc chips, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

In a large bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, melt half of the chocolate chips with half of a stick of butter, stirring a few times, until smooth, about 7 minutes.Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, combine other half stick of butter and sugar in bowl of stand mixer (fitted with paddle attachment) and cream for about a minute.  Add eggs, one at a time and beat on medium-high speed for about five minutes. Add vanilla. Beat on low to combine.

Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, soda, and salt. Whisk well to combine.

Fold in chocolate mixture into egg mixture.

Fold in flour mixture. Fold in remaining chocolate chips.

Place dough in freezer for one hour, or alternately chill dough in the fridge overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.  Drop cookie dough by tablespoon onto cookie sheet, leaving two inches between each cookie.

Repeat with remaining dough.  Place in freezer for 5-10 minutes before baking.

Bake for eight minutes.  Let cool slightly on cookie sheet.  Enjoy!

Crazy, hazy (not lazy) days of summer

Oh man, what a summer…

June was ghastly, July was a haze and August. Oh, August—it blew my mind.

I decided to take the month of August off and ended my long standing contract with a beloved client because I needed space to mourn and just recoup from losing my Dad.  I needed a bit of fun. And I got it in the form of TikiOasis, which was a downright hoot and a half.   It was wonderful.  Just me gabbing with my friends staying up late  laughing and having a complete blast wearing nutty hats and vintage muumuus.

When I returned, I of course was craving my family. I needed to snuggle my Peach. And what better place to do that than while camping.  It was the Peach’s first camping trip and we chose the perfect place for it–a darling lake called Pinecrest.  The trip was wonderful!  The Peach had a blast, but I must admit, I missed my bed.   We innocently decided to talk about the lake one morning with the Peach and it turned into a three hour trail of tears with a pre-schooler.  Hoo boy. But she was a good sport about it.  Even we were pooped after the hike.

But when you have a proper month off, you need to do something a bit extraordinary. And for me that was a trip to visit my dearest friend, Jen Otter in London.  This was the first time I returned to London since I was living there in 1993.  The weather was gorgeous and well, London showed me its prettiest side with gorgeous balmy weather in seventies and bright happy days.  Jennifer was the consummate guest.  We had the nicest tea that the Brown hotel (the Ritz was sadly booked) and I saw a brilliant exhibition at the V&A on eighties club fashion in London.  We had so much fun on our day trip to Brighton.  The pier was just dizzying. And we also found the Quadrophenia alley.

I felt I needed to end this month with a moment of reflection and decided to spend August 31st taking apart my father’s suits to make a memorial quilt.  He wore a suit almost every day of his career as a journalist and seeing them just turned me into a puddle.  It was then that I realized that mourning isn’t something that has a time limit. Or can put on hold with a lovely vacation.  It is an ongoing experience and that’s OK. It is part of me. And that is OK.

How was your August?
