Hippety Hoppety Happy Easter Day!

This weekend is Easter Sunday, which always makes me feel nostalgic. I love looking at vintage photos. I thought it would be fun to take a look at some happy Easter celebrations through the years… These two remind me of me and my little brother Karl (who’s not so little anymore, of course…he’s taller than meeee).

Aw those cowboy boots are just too much—and his little grin. “I found one mama!!”

Oh ho ho! Methinks someone’s mama made a little magic mushroom quiche for Easter Brunch….she got a little groovy this Easter. Miss Lavender Tights is amazing but this poor little lad looks like he’s been rummaging in Danny Partridge’s closet. Hee.

Aw we totally made egg ornaments and hung them on branches like this! My Tante Marie made one of those awesome rabbit cakes once too. So excellent!

Erm….bravo kiddos for sitting on the Creepy Rabbit of Doom with nary a tear in sight!

I could talk about the little non-shirt wearin’ cutie holding up her (his?) widdle bunnies….but I’m more transfixed by that GINORMOUS stash of magazines next to the child. You GO vintage hoarder! This mom is my kinda gal.

Love the snazzy lawn chair Easter!

This photo reminds me the most of my own Easters. We definitely dressed up and went on the hunt for our little easter baskets!

LOVE those groovy mugs that dad is dippin’ the eggs in! That little girl is so happy….and I love her brother kickin’ back in his high chair with a nice mug o’ coffee.

This one is one of my all time favorite photos….The year was 1967 and these sassy ladies from Sherman Oaks, California were having quite the day in their easter bonnets! So cute and classy.

But the winner goes to this super cutie jammin’ on the kitchen table in his jammies (pa-JAMmies???) whilst an ominous green bunny looks on. YAY!

Oh yes, and then there’s this. The awesome Rankin-Bass Easter special. I always loved the song.

Hope you have a hippety hoppety awesome day.

Guest Post // Frecklewonder’s Thrifting with Kiddos

hello frendos! so i have another fantastic guest post for you from my girl Jenny. now, you know we love the vintage, recycled and thrifted here at Modern Kiddo. we get a lot of emails from people asking us for thrifting tips and so i was super thrilled when jenny offered to share some of her amazing tips and tricks. jenny visited me 6 years ago and we got to go thrifting together which was SO much fun! i consider myself a thrifting pro—but miss jenny is for sure a master! i just know you’re going to love this post. take it away lady freckle!

hiya there MODERN KIDDO readers! it’s me, jenny again! just in case you missed my vintage book guest post, I run a fun blog + shop called frecklewonder and a brand new shop for the little set called kidwonder!

I looove thrifting. as a mama of two, the “How Do You Do It?” question comes up enough that i thought it might be fun to share my own tips on Thrifting With Kids. and it just hit me, as i was thinking about all this that i’ve got a solid 9 years of this under my belt now. which is just kind of, wow. that’s A LOT of trips in the thrifts with the kids. hundreds. (thousands? oh my.) on average, i hit ‘em 4 times a week. 2 or 3 mornings will cover most of my closest shops, and then i usually treat myself to one trip in the evening, BY MYSELF. and FYI, i *never* go on the weekends. way to0 busy for my comfort level. anyhow, here’s what works for us:

1. REST. number 1 most important rule of all: make sure your kiddo is WELL RESTED. i never, EVER hit the thrift with a sleepy kid. it won’t work. you will be frustrated, your kid will be having a meltdown and people will be giving you the stink eye. you will leave with nothing but frazzled nerves, and let’s face it- that’s not what you left the house for. time your thrift runs for when your kiddo is alert and in a good mood. cause honey, thrifting does not equal stress. not in my book.

2. SNACKS. snacks are a must. if you have smaller kid who will be riding in the cart be sure to stick a little bottle of water + a cup of something to snack on into your bag before you leave the house. i always bring a cereal bar or a little cup of crackers or goldfish pretzels for dotty and it keeps her happy + gives me a chance to really comb my way through the racks. if your kiddo is too big to fit in the cart, make it a treat and pick up a couple milkshakes beforehand! henry and i used to go to this 50s diner when we’d do a weekly thrift run in a different town. he was 4 or 5 at the time, and it was easy to make the “stay where i can see you” rule, and usually he’d just toodle along with me sipping his milkshake, chatting, happy as can be. he’s almost 9 now, and he doesn’t thrift with me nearly as much as he did when he was younger (mostly because i go during school hours) and yes, occasionally he groans about “popping in” with me, BUT, he also knows that some of his best scores that he treasures most have come from thrift stores. henry knows the value in just popping in, because You Never Know What You’re Going To Find (i coined that phrase, thankyouverymuch). and one day, you just might find a HUGE bag of some kid’s entire lego collection for $1.85. and you will bow down to the thrift gods and you will get up and do The Happy Dance. which we did, and we’ve had more than our share of experiences like that, but i digress…

sometimes you have to get creative, and turn the lid of your sigg bottle into a miniature cup because you forgot the mini water bottle. and you might find yourself having to stop every 6 steps to refill said miniature cup, and you might feel like you only get to surf past a half dozen shirts before said refill, but guess what?

it works!

and your kiddo is happy!

really, really happy.

3. BOOKS. another thing i grab before we head out the door is a couple of board books. sure, by this time, with the snacks, the bottles of water, the wipes, the diapers, plus all my own personal crap, i’m starting to feel like a pack mule when i’m only leaving the house for a couple hours, but TRUST ME. these things really make for your best chance at a successful trip. but if you forget the books, don’t fret! you can always grab a book or two from the kid’s book bin, and just toss it back in when you’re done. i mean, it’s a thrift store, you know?! it’s been read before! what’s one more time?! sometimes dotty will bring along something else like a couple of buddies (stuffed animals) or recently, she’s got this leap pad alphabet caterpillar thing-a-ma-abob that she likes to bring. all of these things serve as good entertainment. and an entertained kid equals a happy kid. and a happy kid equals a happy mama. so it’s win-win.

4. BE CREATIVE. when the other tricks are all used up, do something else! if you’re shopping with a toddler, hand ‘em a shirt and say, “hey! can you practice doing these buttons for me?!”

or, “hey! wanna look in mama’s purse for something?!” lately that one gets a big YEAH! from dotty, because she is pretty obsessed with “mama soft” right now. girlfriend will sit there in a dream like state for 15 minutes, just rubbing chap stick on her lips.

5. HAVE FUN. really! don’t be afraid to be silly. you can pretty much count on a thrift store to have some rockin’ tunes (oldies, crazy country, classic rock) and guess what? we dance like no one’s watching. we sing like no one’s listening. we make funny faces. we talk. we laugh. we just have a good time.

and in the end, isn’t that what it’s all about? :)

so there you have it. simple stuff, really. but i find that it works for me every time. give it a try. and HAPPY THRIFTING! xo Jenny

Guest Post // Easter Downloadable from Draw! Pilgrim

Hurray! My most fabulous friend Pilgrim is here today! I “met” Pilgrim several years ago when she stumbled upon my old blog Strawberry Lemonade and realized that we were magical cyber twins of vintage color! We had such similar aesthetics and loves of 60s and 70s. I was immediately drawn in by her fun and sassy personality and blown away by her talent as an artist. When Dottie and I decided to launch Modern Kiddo, Miss Pilgrim was right there by our sides—she has created all of our fantastic art work and is a big part of our Kiddo Family! She may live in Australia, but I’ve been lucky to meet her in person twice—most recently we spent four days chillin’ at the ALT Design Summit. I adore her and if you love color and vintage like I do, I highly recommend you check our her blog, Draw! Pilgrim!

Hi friends, this is Pilgrim and I am the pilgrim behind Draw! Pilgrim. I’m so happy to be guest blogging on Modern Kiddo. I have a four year old son and Modern Kiddo is always my first stop for groovy inspiration. Today I’ve made a fun little printable for you to create with your family this Easter. Just  download the bag template, cut, glue assemble and fill with your favorite Easter goodies. I’ve even left a space for you to write in a name!

Download the bag template here!

I hope you have a fun Easter and enjoy making this treat bag! xo Pilgrim
Thank you so much Pilgrim! How fun and easy peasy to make! Don’t forget to swing by Pilgrim’s Etsy shop. She has so many amazing goodies.

Guest Post // The Bleubird Nursery Tour

Aloha friends! Our hawaii vacation has been amazing so far. Yesterday we traveled the Road to Hana and hit the beautiful black sand beach….it was truly incredible! We already have had some amazing Guest Posts including the Vintage Master Class with my stylish mama, a fantastic edition of Alix’s Vintage Bookshelf with Jenny of Frecklewonder and some tasty snack action from Shutterbean! This afternoon I am super thrilled to have my amazing friend James guesting. James has two stunning kiddos and an adorable little baby. She’s also the stylish proprietress of Bleubird Vintage! I loved her little bebe’s nursery space and was  delighted when she offered to share it with you guys. I just know you’ll love this sweet space too!

hello modern kiddo readers! this is “miss” james kicinski from bleubird and i’m a lean mean vintage lovin’ machine from texas! i am the owner and stylist of bleubird vintage and a proud mama of three adorable little kiddos. i am so excited to share with you photos of my little birdies nursery. i adore the way it turned out (shh! don’t tell the older kiddos but it’s my favorite room in the house right now. hee!). the room was originally my sewing room but once we found out we had a new little birdie on the way it was time to move the fabric and machines downstairs and transform it into a tiny girls room. the space is quite small. i’m not sure what the square footage is but trust me it’s teeny tiny, but perfect for a small child. there is also no closet so i had to get creative when it came to storing her clothes. it was a challenge to make everything fit and not look cluttered, but one that i was excited to take on. so here you have it…baby gemma bird’s nursery!

i drew inspiration from everywhere i could. it’s a little bit vintage, a little bit mid century and a little bit shabby chic, i suppose. i also wanted to add a lot of color with accessories, knit toys, stuffed & handmade dolls. i read a lot of the design blogs that featured other nurserys to collect inspiration. most came from european homes, they love color and had some really great ideas which i incorporated into the room.

i really wanted this fiberglass mid century rocker and had put it on my baby wish list way back when i was gathering inspiration for the space and was so pleasantly surprised when modernica gifted it to me for baby gemma’s nursery. that was the happiest day! both julian and milla plum have chalkboard walls in their rooms so of course i wanted to give the bird her own little wall to doodle on.

i used a lot of antique store finds for storage. wooden crates, wire planters and baskets to store toys, books and blankies.

as i said earlier the room had no closet so i had to create one. there was a built in dresser in the wall with a cubby hole above for a television (i’m assuming) so we bought a rod and hung it inside… voila instant tiny closet.

the drawers beneath are packed with clothes as well as on the wall above her crib. i hung some of her vintage dresses there and it not only gave me a bit more closet space but also looks pretty cute. i have quite the collection of little vintage dresses for her. many are in our closet as well because i ran out of room.

many of these dresses & clothes were sweet gifts from blog readers and friends. i love them all so much!

her little crib is full of lots of hand crafted knit toys. i made her sheets from vintage linens and a little pillow out of doilies from my friend rachel’s diy.

we picked up this tiny formica table and chairs set at an antique shop here in texas on one of our summer road trips. i imagine her having cute little tea parties there one day.

her changing table top and dresser were actually her big sister milla plum’s when she was a baby. she was happy to pass it along to her baby sister because she got a new bigger and taller dresser. i hung wire planters above the changing table/dresser and filled them with handmade dolls by mama, sleepy king, warm sugar and a peppe doll from luckyboy sunday. a cute idea that i found from a design blog. i love the way it turned out.

a few more cute little things in the room that i just love…

there’s lots of love in this room and i am so so smitten with how it turned out. thanks for taking a look, modern kiddo readers! XO!

Thank you so much James! This is such a sweet little nursery…I love the mixture of quirky vintage and warm modern. It’s so cozy! But my favorite part of the nursery? That sweet little baby gemma!

Quick Cookin’ with Shutterbean :: Tasty Fruit Dippers

ALOHA AGAIN! This isn’t really a Guest Post, since Miss Shutterbean is a part of the Kiddo family, but the gracious and sassy Tracy whipped together a most scrumptious (and EASY!) snackers for you guys. It’s so warm and balmy over here I have been craving this in a BIG WAY! Take it away Tracy!

Hello! Shutterbean here. I just gotta say that I’m sooo jealous of Alix and her Hawaiian trip! I want to be drinking pina coladas in the sun with a stack of trashy magazines right now! Mmmmmm Hawaii! Today I’ve got pineapple on the brain. Must be all that Hawaiian daydreaming! I’ve whipped up a little snack inspired by Alix’s getaway for you and your kiddos!  Won’t you join me?

Isn’t it funny how you can remember certain food related things from your childhood? When I was little, I was a Brownie. Remember Girl Scouts?? My mom was the den mother and she was in charge of bringing healthy/delicious snacks for us girls every week. One week she made fruit kebabs with a tasty lime yogurt dip and I was totally stupefied. I had no idea that my mom had this in her bag of tricks since I never had it at home before! I remember demolishing a few sticks and my mom being proud! I still haven’t forgotten that moment…

So let’s talk about snacks & kids for a second. Fruit on a stick! It’s a brilliant idea isn’t it? It’s fun, portable and the combinations are endless! Your little one doesn’t like pineapples but loves grapes? Sub them! Not sure if they will actually like them? Have them help you with a batch! It’s fun piercing fruit with sticks! Just be careful with the sharp pointy edges.

Let’s get started with our Lime Yogurt Dip!  Here it is!

Gather your simple ingredients. Yogurt, brown sugar, lime zest & lime juice.

We’re having an ingredient party and you’re invited!

Mix the dip together and take a little sample…

Dip Away!

I guarantee these fruit kebabs will be a treat your kids never forget!

Lime Yogurt Dip:

– 1 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt
– 3 tablespoons brown sugar (use more if you want it sweeter)
– A small squeeze of lime juice
– 1/4 teaspoon lime zest

Stir all of the ingredients together in a small bowl. Let mixture sit for 5 minutes and then serve with your fruit kebabs!
