It’s Monday and…

Howdy folks! Did you have a nice weekend? I did!  I was in estate sale heaven today. The lady who lived at this house was very into Hawaii, extremely crafty and into needlepoint as well as sewing.  SCORE! I found some SERIOUSLY awesome stuff—from a needlepoint bag to vintage Hawaiian vinyl to amazing vintage fabric for future craft projects!  Photos are on my Instagram (MissDottie) if you’d like to check out my haul.

In other news, it finally rained in the Bay Area, demanding I make tomato soup and grilled cheese sammies for Sunday dinner with my Peachy sous chef. All in all, a pretty decent weekend.

But offline scores couldn’t keep me from checking out some online goodies today!

You don’t expect me to not include this little gem from our girl, Lishyloo?  I love knits on babies. So cozy!

This snuggly sweater is perfect for nursing a hot chocolate after hitting the bunny slopes.  With elephants to boot! From Etsy seller, Star Friends on Earth!

This stool will get your kiddos up to the sink so quickly!  WANT!  That beats the heck out of the one I bought from IKEA for the Peach. From Etsy seller, Sweet Shop Vintage.

Want something to wear to pick apples? How about this great vintage jacket from Kyssa Vintage?  Pure seventies joy.

Strike up the band with this stunning set of vintage kiddo drums that are just begging to be bought. Heck even put on the bookshelf if you don’t want to hear the noise. So lovely! From Etsy seller, Sushi Pot Parts.

How do you push the girliness up to eleven–past lace and pink? Why add a butterfly of course! Like this little vintage dressie did. From Etsy seller, 3 Ring Circus.

Fisher Price vintage swimming pool? Shut the front door! I didn’t even know that EXISTED! Aww yeah! From Etsy seller, Toys of the Past.

Oh, I loved these HOW & WHY Wonder books!  I want to do experiments with a tin can, a piece of celery, and a balloon! From Etsy seller, AdaLou Vintage.

Who says blue is just for boys.  No one, if they saw this girlie little dressie in the prettiest blue. From Etsy seller, Flour Clothing.

I know mocs are very hot right now for babies and with good reason since they are so soft and malleable to that widdle baby footie. So I hope someone snatches these vintage cuties from Etsy seller, Ms. Tips pronto!

What lil pardner wouldn’t look adorable in this sweet vintage onesie with a cowboy and horse pattern on top?  Cowboy hat not included. From Etsy seller, Dream Vintage.

Happy Monday, folks!

I’m a little tired. But I love this artwork!

Happy Friday everyone. I’m here in lovely Boston on a freelance writing assignment. I’m working with one of my old ad partners, and it’s great to see him again. But lemme tell ya, yesterday was brutal! I woke up at 4:45am to hop on my 6:20am flight (yeech) flew on a crowded plane to Salt Lake, raced to make my connection and arrived in Boston around 4:30. I had to go over to the office to check in and because things are fast and furious on this special project, I had to work UNTIL MIDNIGHT. [cue Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money”]

People I’m whipped! Did I mention we also adopted a doggie? Oh it’s a wonderful story, but one I need to post in better detail (but here is a sneak peek of our big boy, Samson!). So I’ll share that with you guys next week. Anyway my Friday posts are not the usual fare. I gots no links to share. I do, however, have some lovely artwork to appease ya…..have a super happy weekend everyone!!

==============================================
You know how searching on the web is like one giant scavenger hunt? I love when I accidentally stumble upon something I wasn’t even looking for. So a few years ago I was researching wallpaper (don’t ask) and I stumbled upon the dreamy art of Esen Demirci. Her work borrows heavily from vintage fashion magazines, so you know I’m totally in love. Part collage and part illustration, Esen describes her work as, “A bit of humour and pop music of the 50s.”

I love the retro vibe and muted colors (even though I’m usually a bright girl). Esen is from Istanbul and she says her main influences include Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Luc Godard, and Michel Gondry. I am really into how she uses illustration mixed with vintage fashion photos, old book pages, and even wallpaper patterns to produce digital and traditional collage work.

Browse her little Etsy shop. Read her blog. And aw, look at my big sweet doggy Sam one more time.

Olive Juice :: Great fashion and a great cause.

The lovely folks at Olive Juice sent us some clothing for the Peach and Wolfie and I gotta say, we Modern Kiddo mamas are so loving this brand!  Their line is decidedly vintage inspired, with classic pieces for boys and girls. Their stuff is reeeally cute and non-fussy. Now that the weather’s finally warmed up in the Bay Area we are able to wear such lovely lighter classics. Yay summer wardrobe!

The reason we are loving them so much lately, however, is because they are doing an amazing philanthropic push. In a “buy one, give one” effort, Olive Juice will provide one item of clothing for every item purchased through their special microsite, http://www.olivejuicegives.com. These donated items will then go to a child in need with the help of Clothes4Souls.

As if you didn’t need an excuse to buy such gorgeous clothes. But this great Clothes4Souls partnership just makes the clothes even sweeter.

Just look at Master Wolfgang in these wonderful linen pants!

Wolfie is sportin’ a pair of the Olive Juice Rand pant, which is great for boys or girls. They are reeeally comfy and while Alix dressed ’em down, you could easily dress them up. Alix said, “These are a 7/8 and are a little big on the Wolf (the clothing is cut generously), but he still loves them. The beauty of this pant is that as your kiddo grows, they get that cropped look (which I think they’re supposed to have) which makes them really beachie cool!”

Ms. Peach is rocking this sweet, lined linen dress, which I paired with a light cotton voile top.  I think this little dress would be wonderful just on its own or layered with a nice under shirt and leggings.  Super comfy and cozy as well! Also, it would be totally adorable next year worn as a tunic with some little shorts in a fun print fabric.  I am really impressed by the high quality of the piece, so I know it will last to next year, which is especially nice.

And bonus points for pockets! The Peach loves a good pocket.

So, three cheers for Olive Juice and its Clothes4Souls initiative. Do stop by Olive Juice to check out their wonderful clothing—and to help send an outfit or two to a child in need!

Alix’s Closet How To :: Stretching Yer Shoes!

Ouchie, owie! Tight shoes. The bain of my existence! Back in the day I could rock a little vintage pointy pump, or a pair of shoes that were just a weeee bit too tight. But now? I have a zero tightness policy. I would rather wear a pair of shoes a size too big than suffer a pinchin’ on my big toe. Dare I admit I’m workin’ a bunion over there? Oh yes. I am.

So I was extremely delighted when i discovered this easy peasy way to give your shoes a little added stretch. And all you need is this:

No, there isn’t a magic stretching liquid in that little bag….it’s simply  a little zip lock baggie of water! Just you wait, it’ll all make sense.

Fill a ziplock bag of water. Don’t use a cheap one, you def want to make sure that the bag doesn’t leak. I used the little snack size bags because my shoes were little flats (and I wear a size 7…or 8 if i’m wanting a little more roooom!). Don’t fill the bags to overflowing, just 3/4 of the way is fine.

Now insert the baggie of water into your shoe, make sure it is down deep inside if that’s the area that is too tight. Mine are always a little snug across the toes. Again, do make sure that bag is sealed tightly!

Stick those shoeies in the freezer! Of course you should put the shoe in a plastic/paper bag first, to keep things clean (and you may want to warn family members so they don’t think you’re crazy for putting shoes in the freezer!). Now we let the ice freeze. Here’s the thing. Water expands as it freezes….and as the water expands inside the shoe, it will stretch the shoe with it! Genius!

It’s not a perfect system, but it worked for me. I would say I think it works best on leather shoes….i don’t know if I’d try it on boots. You kind of want a shoe that you can manipulate your zip lock baggie in easily. I think strappy sandals/heels, pointy toed pumps and flats like these are probably best. So, to recap!

    1. Fill two small ziplock bags 1/2-3/4 with water. Make sure they are sealed tightly!
    2. Insert them inside your shoes.
    3. Stick those shoes in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer.
    4. Leave inside the freezer until the water has completely turned to ice .
    5. Remove from freezer and  let thaw (approx 20 minutes). Don’t leave the ice in to melt completely or it could burst.
    6. Remove the ice baggies.
    7. Try on your shoesies and do the happy dance!
