Hooper’s Room Tour {It’s a good one!}

Hey friends! I have a super fun room tour for you guys today. It’s a little bit vintage, a little bit modern and a whole lotta cute. The adorable Ashely (of The Stork & The Beanstalk) has an equally adorable son named Hooper (so cute, right??). You might remember him as one of our fabulous Weekly Kiddos. Well check out the sweet room where he lays his little head!

SO cute huh! I chatted with Hooper’s mama Ashley and she told me a little bit about the room:

“Most everything in the room is used! The crib, made by Oeuf, was purchased on craigslist for a fraction of the price. The chair and danish style dresser were also purchased on craiglist (yay craigslist!). The wooden crates were found at a flea market.”

Many of the toys were Ashley’s own from when she was a child and the old cars were her dad’s. So sweet!

“The Spanish posters were  purchased while we were in Cuba and I love them! They were the first thing we bought for the room and I love that they came from such a dreamy place. ” {You can check out more of her Cuban adventure over here.}

Fabulous job, Miss Ashley! Hooper’s room is the perfect mix of nostalgia and mid-century.I’m pleased to report Hooper is expecting a little brother verrrrry soon.I can’t wait to see what Ashley dreams up for the new bebe’s room!

The Summit School Flame Yearbook 1964. Woot!

I was in a teensy thrift store a while back…you know the ones that are run by really sweet little old ladies? I usually find that I will walk away with absolutely nothing, or something really awesome. There’s not much middle ground. This time I didn’t find much, but as I was making my out of the shop I spied a stack of old year books. This one in particular caught my eye. It was for an all girls school in Minnesota (yes I found it in California). I think these are so fun to look at. C’mon, lets take a peek!

The senior class had some really cool looking young ladies.

haha. i love that she is a “record, boy and clothing collector”!

Yes. Her nickname is SHOTSY. Love that!

Each section had a special hand pressed (hand colored?) page tipped in—so fun! And how cute is this:

But what about the staff?? I have to say that Headmistress Ethel Pease looks like a good ol gal!

But that Gertrude Kelsey? Shelooks like a tough old bird, eh?

I have several other yearbooks that I’ll be sharing with you guys—the co-ed ones are especially fun because they have great photos of DANCES! (And lets not forget the autographs….)

Vintage cuteness to start your day!

So, I’m back from Paris and about to start a two week business trip to SLC for my new client. As you can imagine, I kinda got a lot on my plate.  But before I go, I MUST share with you a couple of goodies I found on Etsy.

I wish I had such a cute daisy suitcase to bring home all of my goodies from Paris.  And I just needed to share this with you all. I know it is not necessarily kiddo, but I could see it in a child’s room. Or my own… Just sayin’… From Etsy seller, Founded Shop.

These darling baby toys are so sweet.  I love the little phone rattles. So darling! From Etsy seller, Sweet Shop Vintage.

I cannot get enough of these darling plaid pants for boys or girls! Like these yellow and blue plaiders. So great! From Etsy seller, Storybook Retro.

I’m in love with this darling daisy dressie.  And that peter pan collar is killing me. From Etsy seller, Bondplace Vintage.

Clearly I’m in a daisy kind of mood, because I couldn’t say no to this sweet little velvet daisy number.  And half the petals have been plucked. Lovely!  From Stop the Clock Vintage.

“U.S. Male?” Are you kidding me?  This might be my favorite applique ever. EVER!  From Etsy seller, 77Street.

I’m not a fan of clowns, but this little sweetness, yeah.  I like this wonderful little peg rack. Also, who doesn’t need more places to hang stuff, right? From Etsy seller, Flossy Bobbsey.

Um, I’m in love with this sweetie plum little sun suit. Chiffon and the heart and the ruffle and oh! Just so darn cute! From Etsy seller, Baby Tweed.

I can’t even believe the cuteness that is this sweet little vintage boy’s sweater.  I love the bit of yellow in the nautical aspect. From Etsy seller, Peppermint and Cocoa.

Hell to the YES. From Etsy seller, Deb’s Country Vintage.

Happy Monday, friends!

PS: And expect a couple of posts on Paris later this week!

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

A couple of weeks ago, I found the picture above of my Dad from his days at Newsweek and had to share it. Actually I wanted to share more than just this picture. I wanted to talk a bit about how amazing my Dad is. I know everyone’s dad is amazing, but I’m glad this guy is my Dad.  He is always there for me.  A voice of sanity in an, at times, very shaky world.

So, I decided to enter him in SF Chronicle writer, and parenting blogger, Peter Hartlaub’s “My Father’s A Hipster” contest. with the following blurb that had to be under 100 words:

Here is a picture of my Dad from his days working for Newsweek in L.A. Equally comfortable hanging out with cast of Laugh In or a few Black Panthers, my Dad rocked the seventies with his outstanding style that would make Andre 3000 jealous. He is the only man I know who uses the phrase, “that cat” and actually sounds cool saying it. Even though he spent my childhood traveling and working late covering major news stories of the seventies and eighties, he always made me feel like I was front page news—above the fold even.

PS: But he still corrects my grammar. Once an editor always an editor…

Of course, he’s so much more than 100 words.  He was one of the first black journalists hired full time at Newsweek, breaking color lines in the sixties. He was mentored by Katherine Graham from the Washington Post. He was a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists which later became known as the Maynard Institute. He has won a Pulitzer for his work. And, folks, he interviewed Cher in the seventies. CHER!

But more important than that, my dad attended my father daughter Valentine’s Day dance in second grade and when some girls with heart sticker under their folding chairs got a special surprise, my dad overturned every chair until he found one with a heart sticker on it. He crammed $50 in my hand before prom as “mad money”. Here is how the conversation went:

Dad: “Do you know what mad money is?”

Me: “No.”

Dad: “It’s for when you get mad at your date and need to get out of there. BE SAFE!”

He said I was, “the second most beautiful bride he’d ever seen.” I love him so much for that alone.

And when I was recently stressed over my career he said, “to be truly responsible, you need to be responsible for yourself first.” Clearly the man has a way with words.

I could go on and on and share more and more pictures, if my parents weren’t so tightfisted with the slides. But here’s another one of his Newsweek photos I love.

But back to the contest. Well, the “winner” has yet to be decided, but Dad’s pic did make the front page of the SF Chronicle’s Style Section.  Who could say no to that bow tie?

Happy Father’s day, Dad! Thanks for being a wonderful example of how to be a working parent and make the most of each and every moment.

I love you!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Fun Stuff to Browse

Ooooh lalala! It’s the Friday Link Hootenanny….ON FRIDAY! Yes, it’s a miracle! Today is Wolfie’s last day of school so we are officially hittin’ SUMMER VACATION mode. Whooo hoo! Life already seems busy, we have a birthday party and a wedding to go to this weekend, but we’ll hopefully squeeze in some nice loungin’ and relaxin’ too. Until then, here are some cool things that caught my eye this week!

1. THIS COVER WILL HAVE YOU IN STITCHES.

Embroidered Book Covers? Yes please. Artist Jillian Tamaki is so super clever and these book covers she did for Penguin are BRILLLIANT. See them all here.

2. UNEXPECTED GUESTS

I am loving the San Francisco home of mid century modern finds’ christine and carlos—and their kiddos. WOW. It’s all so clean and modern but homey. You can see more on sfgirlbybay.

3. NORTH POLE CRIB

A while back I posted about this magical place near Santa Cruz called Santa’s Village. It was this retro wonderland where it was Christmas 365 days a year! Sadly  it was torn down several years ago. So I was SUPER excited to see Rachel over at Smile and Wave posting photos of the Santa’s Village near her. Check out her post here.

4. ABANDONED VINTAGE CARS

I am loving these abndoned vintage cars on Palermo Viejo’s streets in Buenos Aires. Captured beautifully by Brazilian art director, Eduardo Fialho. We actually had a VW station wagon like the one below except it was blue….we even drove it from Michigan to California for our summer vacation!

5. NEON BOWLS ME OVER

Yeah. I’m still not done with the neon. And I think it looks smashing paired with this organic wood! See ’em here on Poppytalk.

6. WHY YOU GOTTA DIS THE COMIC?

If you don’t already know this….most people think using Comic Sans “font” is akin to holding up a flashing sign that says “I know nothing about design!” Well, Comic Sans has had enough of your bad mouthing and has written a rebuttal. This piece in McSweeney’s is the funniest thing EVER. I read it when it first came out a while back, but just saw it over at Gala Darling again this week and was reminded how HIGHlarious it is! Read it here.

7. TATTOO YOU.

Groovy brain child of Swiss Miss Tina Roth Eisenberg, Tatty is a collection of designy temporary tattoos created by some of the world’s hippest designers. For the month of  June, Tattly is offering 6-month tattoo subscriptions. And that’s just WAY cooler than the fruit of the month club.

8. AFFORDABLE HERMES. YAY.

Last year, infamous designer brand Hermes released a printable version of the iconic Kelly bag. So cool! Well now they’ve done it again with these cool clutches. To download yours, simply visit this page, let it load, and then click on the “I want it, I’ll have it” thumbnail. You can choose from six different patterns. Fun! I wish I could track down the Kelly…it’s so cute too.

9. DADDY, OH!

{Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth and their sweet bebe!}

{Sammy Davis Jr. and his cute little man}

{Humphrey Bogart and his plaid wearin’ tot!}

I love these charming photos of famous dads and their offspring. See the whole collection over at the LIFE archives.

Ahhh the Weber grill. What dad doesn’t love to BBQ? In honor of Father’s Day this weekend, I found a super rad vintage commercial featuring Paul Picerni…Star of TV and Screen. (OK, fine, I have no idea who he really is…..) But watch this. It’s awesome. The ending is the best part. OK…I’m off to watch more Dexter. I’m on Season 4 (Trinity) and utterly obsessed!!! HAPPY FRIDAY!
