flashback // The Little Orange Boxes from UNICEF

 photo Unicef_costume.jpg
Back in the day, when Halloween rolled around, kid’s toted around a little orange box that kind of looked like a juice box (and later a box of animal crackers!). But they were so much more.

Here’s the story behind that little orange box.

It started with a school teacher named Mrs. Allison who saw her children’s heavy bags of candy every Halloween and thought all that neighborly fun could be used for good—not just potential cavities. Around that time, she saw a parade led by UNICEF trying to raise money to supply milk to undernourished countries across the sea. Mrs. Allison was so inspired by the parade that she came up with the idea of having children ask for money on behalf of UNICEF as they were trick or treating on Halloween—collected in milk cartons!

What started in Philadelphia in 1950 caught on and UNICEF started receiving checks from schools across the nation. And “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!” was born.

It became so big that TV shows started helping—there was even an entire episode of Bewitched dedicated to UNICEF. Oh, how I would have loved to have seen that!

Even The Brady Bunch joined in the fun.

And Betsy McCall, the famous McCall paper doll, dedicated a whole page of Halloween cuteness to the cause!

It has been more than sixty years since Mrs. Allison came up with her terrific idea and nearly $170 million have been raised by kids toting UNICEF collection boxes on Halloween calling out “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!” These funds that have enabled UNICEF to save and improve children’s lives by providing health care, improved nutrition, clean water, education and more.

In 2004, UNICEF took their Trick Or Treat fundraising online and as a result we don’t see too many of those little orange boxes. But Mrs. Allison’s wonderful idea, and the power of UNICEF, continues to change the world.

It’s our Annual Creepy Cool Vintage Halloween Mask Tribute

 photo halloween2013_10.jpg

Friends,  I have to say, this is one of my favorite posts I do all year. It started back a few year’s ago when I went to one of those Halloween Super Stores and ended up getting totally freaked out by all the ultra creepy masks. Is this what halloween is all about now? Rotting zombies? Psycho clowns? That lame Scream ghost?? I remembering shaking my head and thinking, “Man, it’s not like back in the day. Costumes were so much cuter back then!” But then as I started looking for old photos I had the realization that while many of those old plastic mask costumes were under the guise of innocent characters, most of them were totally creepy. Creepy cool. Let’s take a look!

We begin with this grim duo….the jaunty bowler and capelet are a nice try at “cute-ing” this pair, up….but don’t think we didn’t notice that your face was green, little witchie poo.

 photo halloween2013_2.jpg

Ahhh, the Creature of the Black Lagoon! Lurker of murky swamps….and fan of Revlon’s Racy Red lipstick. It’s very drag-tastic, no?

 photo halloween2013_9new.jpg

Hmmm, I’m not sure what’s scarier….Freddy Frog and the Startled Pumpkin….or the grim face of that lady. (You KNOW she just hissed at them to “Sit up straight for the photo!”) Even the TV looks shocked.

 photo halloween2013_4.jpg

When I find vintage Halloween photos I typically put them into one of two folders: “Cute Vintage Halloween” and “Creepy Vintage Halloween”. This darling group almost made it into the Cute folder. One guess who bumped them into Creepy….

 photo halloween2013_12.jpg

This group is a plastic delight. Nervous clown, defiant skeleton, queen who has a twin sister that’s a nurse, and crazy Raggedy Ann on the end there. Someone needs a hot oil treatment.

 photo halloween2013_11.jpg

Hee. I love the Banana Splits guy and even that lil devil is kinda cute. The witch is where we all fall apart. (Does it say Super Witch on her costume??) Please note the GIGANTIC buckets they are planning on collecting candy with.

 photo halloween2013_5.jpg

If one smoking bum is cool, then two are twice as nice! Bonus points for dainty candy containers. Not like those greedy bums above.
 photo halloween2013_13new-1.png

These two crack me up….they look sooooooo over it all.

 photo halloween2013_14new.png

OK, so these guys have the best trick or treat sacks we’ve seen thus far, but I’m taking points away for the mom jeans on ol’ Farmer Rosey Cheeks.

 photo halloween2013_16.png

Oh sweet fancy moses….I don’t really need to say anything here, do I?? Yikes.

 photo halloween2013_3new.jpg

Meet Casper the Friendly-But-Slightly-Maniacal Ghost! I love the double face action here….And those draggy eye brows?? Lets just say I’m a BIG FAN. Hyuck hyuck.

 photo halloween2013_17.png

Oh bunny. His outfit is straight out of one of our Retro Roundups. His make up is straight up Insane Clown Possee.

 photo halloween2013_6.jpg

OK, seriously…..what’s with all these ghost’s eyebrows?? It’s like a master class from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Ironically that witch could do with a good pair of tweezers. And perhaps a slightly LARGER trick or treat bag, hmmm?

 photo halloween2013_7.jpg

This quartet is a visual delight. Let’s go right to left. Looks like someone’s spidey sense was tingling and came up with a forecast of rain. Nice poncho kiddo! Sassy shirtless Indian needs to grab that dream catcher craziness on the wall behind him for a little extra coverage. I think ol eyebrows is supposed to be the Wolfman, but really he’s soooo Zombie Joey Ramon, no? And methinks this Lone Ranger has definitely had a little work done. “Hi Ho Botox, Awaaay!!!!!!”

 photo halloween2013_8.jpg

The jump suit says Donny but that mask is screaming Marie. This is also a classic example of “you better wear your coat under that costume or you’ll freeze to death!”

 photo halloween2013_55.png

And finally….this sweet boy. Oh ya darling lil cowpoke, we hear ya…..

H&M Gets Spooktacular for Halloween!

 photo HM-Marie-Antoinette-Hallo-001.jpg

We love h&m around these parts. They make the best jeans for little dudes and have such cute stuff for little girls. So it shouldn’t have come as any surprise that when they decided to do Halloween costumes for kiddos they kinda hit it out of the park. Check out these crazy cute little ensembles. The suave pirate? That tattoo man pulloever?? The mini Marie Antoinette? LOVE. And there are tons more, like a cool mermaid and a beetlejuice inspired stripey suit for boys and girls.

One of the things I love most is that most of these costumes are totally flexible—you can get a variety of costumes out of each! (Pirate coat = Swashbuckler! George Washington! Mozart! Headless Horseman!) I’m also imagining many a kiddo wanting to wear some of these in every day life too, the quality is really excellent.

But really, the best part is that 25% of all the proceeds go directly to the UNICEF All For The Children fund. Yup, 25%. Nice one H&M!

You can buy them in store or nab them online here.

TASTY BITES // the staycation getaway cocktail

Hello, M.K readers! Remember us? It’s Lindsay & John / Bird & Cleaver; we make food. Seems like we’ve been away forever. Duty calls, we suppose. For what it’s worth, we’ve missed being here, and we are glad to be back!

In the past few weeks, we have spent a large amount of time watching many of our friends heading off for vacations and fun adventures. Being that it is not vacation season for us, all we can do is wish them well…….. annnnnd be secretly jealous of all their impending fun. In particular, the one that is most on our minds is a tropical beach honeymoon! Ugh. Of course, it had to be on the week when it actually started to get a little colder; a cruel reminder of the impending seasonal changes. We just have to keep telling ourselves, our time will come.  Not the honeymoon part; that was ages ago. We are really just interested in the beach relaxation part. Well, that and sipping anything with an umbrella in it! Somehow, we are just going to have to tough it out. Soon enough, it will be our turn to get outta town for a little tropical down time. Until then, we will just have to pretend we’re someplace exotic, right from the comfort of our own home. We think this tasty libation ought to do the trick.

the getaway

2 oz vodka
1 tablespoon tamarind paste
1/2 lime
2 oz coconut water
2 oz orange juice
3-4 mint leaves + more for garnish

Muddle tamarind paste, vodka, lime and mint until all juice is released from lime. Add orange juice and coconut water. Shake 45 seconds.  Strain over ice. Refreshing, tangy  and deeeelicious. Enjoy!

Don’t Forget to Send Me Your Homemade Halloween Costume Goodness!!

I’ve already been getting some amazingly awesome Homemade Halloween costumes from people…..but I’m greedy….I still want MORE! Did you make an outfit for your child last year? Was is spectacular? Or was it a fiasco? Either way, we want to see! Just drop me a note at Alix {at} modernkiddo.com. These DO NOT have to be vintage photos. In fact, the more recent the better!

Here are some highlights from last year’s Costume Parade:

Beautiful Bela is one of the most creative kiddos I know—as is her mama Karen (of Misha Lulu fame). Check out this phenomenal Alice in Wonderland costume….complete with Rabbit’s house. Curiouser and curiouser!

Katrina (CaliKatrina) stole my heart with the simplicity of her little Ewan in this little ghost. It’s SO Charlie Brown, I just love it!

OMG, would you get a load of Sarah Ivy’s amazing son Finn as Baby Bowie???? This kid, I tell ya.

How about this adorable (a-thorable??) Thor! Amazing mom Cheri (i am momma hear me roar) made this rad out fit for her little guy!

I’ve seen quite a few little Snow Whites in my time, but honestly little Stella is just 10x cuter than most! Thanks to Melissa of (whileitrains) for sending her our way!

I love simple and sweet costumes and this one is awesome! Little Eames as Elmer Fudd! Whaddup putty tatt??

OK. This is amazing. Carrie Anne (thelittlebigblog) turned her sweet cutie into Baby Sushi. BABY SUSHI!!!! Cuddly and cute.

Well, HELLO DOLLY! This might be the cutest thing I have ever seen! Mama Stacey (hartandsew) turned her sweet Little Miss into a wind up dolly.

And our Hall of Famer: two years ago little Olive blew people’s minds with this darling rainbow.  Her mama Greta (from LayerCakeShop.com) is so talented! (And no she can’t make you one friends…even though we receive SO MANY emails from people asking if they can buy this!).

OK people…send me those costumes! Even if it turned out a little wonky, we love them ALL! Alix [at] modernkiddo .com
