Modern Kiddo Link Lovin’

OH thank the lordy it’s FRIDAY people—we made it to another weekend. Before we sign off, I wanted to share with you guys some really cute stuff that caught my eye this week!

We talk a lot about thrifting vintage kid’s clothing, but don’t forget about vintage kid’s books and games. Just take a look at these adorable sewing cards that Elsie found over on A Beautiful Mess. I love them!

Oh man, Irene over at Bloesem Kids must have the Cool Kiddo Room Hot Line, because she never disappoints. Check out this amazing circus bedroom:

Joel, the uber awesome papa over at Made by Joel, is always rustlin’ up cool art projects for his kiddos. I was particularly charmed by the simplicity of these groovy tin can telephones.

I don’t have a baby anymore, but these adorable handmade swaddle clothes over at Prudent Baby had me going, “Awwww!”

Last weekend Dottie and I went to thee most fabulous retro-styled Tupperware party! Who knew they still had Tupperware parties, eh? But our hostesses made this a grand affair, complete with deviled eggs and pigs in a blanket! Check it out over at Strawberry Lemonade:

While my child is extremely finnicky , I still like to dream of the day when he munches eagerly on an asparagus and goat cheese tart. The adorable Phyllis at Dash & Bella cooks up some pretty amazing recipes with her two kiddos. Thanks to Heather of 3 Ring Circus who sent me that hot tip!

Oh, and finally……don’t forget to enter our cutie cute Simply Silhouettes Giveaway!

Have an awesome weekend friends. We’ll catch ya on MONDAY!

Meet California Girls: Audrey & Audrey!

One of our most popular features over here at Camp Kiddo is the Weekly Kiddo—when we take a look at what some sassy and stylish real kids are wearing. I was sorting through my submissions and realized I had two adorable little girls who were due their turn—and they had some fun similarities. Both live in California, both are named Audrey and both are extremely adorable! One lives in LA and one in SF, so I thought it might be fun to do a little SoCal/NoCal tribute to these two sweet girls. California girls, take it away!!

MEET Audrey!
This vivacious little four year old cutie is from Los Angeles and just exudes happy energy. She was named after the glamorous Audrey Hepburn (her sweet mama Christy saw Breakfast at Tiffany‘s in highschool and, like so many of us, was hooked!). Her lovely daughter lives up to her name sake. Check out these fun photos!

+ Hot pink tutu
+ Zebra leggings
+ Silver ballerina slippers
+ Sassy upcycled necklace from Etsy shop Itty Bitty Love (yep, that’s Audrey’s mama’s shop! I think I need one for myself!!)

+ White prairie dress
+ Ugg boots
+  Adorable scarflette made from upcycled goodies, from Itty Bitty Love

+ Pink shirt
+ Ruffle skirt
+ Pink jelly sandals

+ Handmade black and white polka dot sundress

+ Upcycled Chanel-inspired necklace with chains and rosettes. SO cute! from Itty Bitty Love.

Look at that smile on that girl! Miss Audrey is a big fan of all things princess. She also loves drawing, crafting (just like her talented mommy!) and dancing in her ballet class. She has a big personality and is just loads of fun! The other little cutie pictured is her little brother Aaron. He loves to follow everything that his big sister does—and his mama tells us it’s not uncommon for us to find him wearing a tiara or running around with cheer leading pom poms in his hands! (I am willing to bet those pictures will be brought out when someone is a teenager! heehee!)

So that would be PLENTY of cuteness for one day, but we’re not done yet! You’re not seeing things, we have ANOTHER adorable Audrey, only this one is from San Francisco!

MEET another Audrey!
This adorable miss is nearly four years old and is such a little sweetie pie! She too is named after the glamorous Audrey Hepburn and has always loved dressing up. With her big grin and infectious giggles, she brings a smile to everyone around her. Let’s take a look at what this wee charmer has in her closet!

+ Red, White, and Blue gingham dress, Gymboree
+ Silver gladiator shoes, Lauren’s Closets (Um, hellllo. LOVE those shoes!)

+ Sassy Hello Kitty Sunglasses
+ Flower Power Print Dress, Target
+ Dora the Explorer backback, Target

+ Pucci Style Tunic, Lauren’s Consignment
+ Black leggings, Target
+ Headband, swiped from daycare!

+ Sweater tunic, Kohls
+ Jeans, Osh Kosh B’Gosh via Kohls
+ Shoes, Luca and Livie

What a cutie! Little Miss Audrey unapologetically loves anything princess and anything pink. She enjoys walks and hikes and loves learning the names of flowers. When she’s not playing princess or running around with her brother Miles, you’ll find her dancing and singing. Audrey has roots in New Orleans and she loooves discovering new foods with her awesome mama Lynn! Miss Audrey is an adventurous eater and she and her mama often have lunch at food carts and restaurants around the East Bay—even spicy goodies. Her latest discovery is a love of jambalaya! Amazing! Just don’t ask her to try vegetables. Hey, she’s still a kid.

Thank you Christy and Lynn for sharing these two most lovely little girls with us! What an awesome way to end our week! Now, where can I find a pair of silver gladiator sandals in a size 7 1/2? Hmmm.

Guest Blogger: Katie from Art Wall

Hello gang. Today we have a special treat for you—a Guest Post from the amazing and lovely Katie Stephenson, of Art Wall fame. If you are familiar with Art Wall, then you already know how awesome it is. Katie has a fantastic eye and curates a fabulous collection of art in a wide variety of styles. Last week I posted about Wolfie’s bedroom and many of you seemed intrigued by the mix of vintage and original art we had hanging in there. Decorating a child’s room doesn’t have to be limited to teddy bears—so I thought it would be fun to get some tips from a pro like Katie. We are so thrilled she agreed! Take it away Katie!

Hi there!  It’s Katie Stephenson here and I’m honored and excited to be guest-posting today at Modern Kiddo.  If you don’t know me, I run the Art Wall website and blog, I’m also a mom to one, pug-owner to one, and wife to, well—to one.  I love what Alix and Dottie are doing on M.K. and I’m happy to be here.

The theme for today’s post is: choosing and arranging art for a child’s room.  The best advice I have is to pick things that are appropriate for the child, but also work for you.  If mom and dad like it, and it fits, it won’t seem too juvenile and will grow along with the child.

If you’re planning an “Art Wall” (with multiple pieces) try to include one or more of the following tips:

1) Mix fun child-themed objects and tchotchkies, such as vintage flash cards, typography or signage numbers or letters.

2) Include some type of inspirational phrase or “words to live by” advice for your child.

3) Items like a clock, a plate or even an embroidery hoop will add interesting shapes and/or texture.

4) Add in artwork that reference the parents or family—such as a line from dad’s favorite song, a favorite spot, a musical instrument, car or even a pet.

5) Another little trick is using two pieces from the same artist in an assortment.  It will help bring cohesion to the group.

6) One last touch is picking a mix of original and print pieces.  At least one original piece will add richness to the grouping.

My little secret for planning arrangements comes from using editing software on the computer.  You can do this with a program such as Illustrator or Photoshop, but if you’re like me and like things super easy, it’s just as effective to try in Picnik or Picasa.

I like Picasa best for its arrangement ability.  Start by loading images of all your favorite pieces—select ones that work together in your eyes to form a “collage.” You can even re-size them so that they reference their real size in comparison to the other pieces.  Add/delete and move the pieces around until your eyes are happy.

When I started adding favorites for this “boy’s room,” I had no particular color-scheme or theme in mind. After viewing all the images next to each other, I saw 2 different groupings—one a bit more muted and modern, the other with more primary colors and a more quirky traditional feel. I like them both for different reasons:

#1: muted and modern

sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

#2: primary and quirky classic

Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

So now the question is, which one is your favorite?

*************************************

Thank you so much Katie! Personally,  I’m loving Art Wall #2, but I’m kinda obsessed with that awesome Dandy Squirrel by Ryan Berkeley. And don’t feel daunted if you don’t know how to use Picasa. Take a look at Katie’s tips and simply try and incorporate one or two of them! Hanging an unexpected piece (frame an old children’s record cover, hang  a shadow box with fun “objects” inside or buy “letters” from the craft store and spell out a words like “laugh” or “mommy is always right” etc.) can add so much visual interest to a room. Have you done anything unexpected with your kiddo’s room? Send it our way! We love to showcase nursery and room tours! Also, please be sure to stop by Art Wall to browse more lovely pieces—and don’t forget, Katie also has a fabulous blog that I just know you’ll all enjoy. VIVA ZE ART!

Widdle Wednesdays.

Hello pals. I’m back with more teeny treasures. I have some tasty little finds for you, so I’m just gonna jump in and let the pictures speak for themselves!

I’m a sucker for any hat with ears. And for babies with super chewy cheekies. Hee.

The hot pink cloche is really adorable too.

I think you’ll flip for these cutest of vintage-inspired rompers….it’s the lil ruffle bottom that take it over the top. I totally had one of these when I was a little girl.

I love a sweet sun dress and this little one shoulder number is so cute….and so affordable.

Zulily

Have you guys checked out Zulily yet?

I have been flirting with the site for a few weeks and I must say, I’m kinda impressed!

At first I thought they were connected to  Oilily, that insanely popular and gorgeous Dutch line of kid’s clothes and accessories. Oh, but no, it’s way better than just one fabulous line of clothing.  Zulily offers huge discounts (up to 70 percent off–HOLLAH!) on several different brands a week to its members! Think of it like Gilt but for kid’s clothing.  And if there’s anything us Modern Mommies dig as much as a fabulous piece of clothing it’s the delight of a finding a bargain. This site is all about offering daily sales on top-quality apparel, gear and other goodies for moms, babies and kids. Oh yeah, and membership is free. Sweet!

The Petit Lem sleepwear is just gorgeous! I’ve found that good sleepwear is worth its weight in gold. It’s a place I’m willing to spend some dosh on because they get so much wear and I see them ALL. THE. TIME. APlus these prices are just genius so such cutenss!

I also love the great discounted finds they have for Baby Star! Writing on onesies is totally 2009. It’s all about cool geometric shapes on onesies now. And Baby Star is on that trend beautifully with matching pants. I love it!

I am particularly chuffed with the site’s weekly deals on kid’s shoes. The Peach is having some footwear issues–who knew it was so tough to find a size 4.5 wide shoe with a flexible heel? Uh, I do now!  And these prices are just amazing! This week’s kid shoe of choice is Shoofoo and they are just adorable!

They are featuring Mini Muffin goodies too, which are so popular for special events but super comfy at the same time.

But it’s not all about fashion–it’s about discounted goodies for the nursery too, like these gorgeous wall decals from Wee Decor.

The one thing is that you need to check in every day and check it out early because this stuff goes FAST. Like it pays to live on the East Coast fast if you know what I mean.

Color me impressed, Zulily.  I’m very excited to try you out.

Oh and Zulily is excited to have you try it out! I just got wind of a special they are offering people. If you put the term “OURTREAT10” in the special code box, you can get $10 off a $50+ purchase. This offer is valid until May 31st, so take advantage of it now!

Happy Shopping!
