Psst! Wolfie is a Small Style Icon!

Hahahaha, that photo! It always makes me laugh because it’s not reeeeeally my sweet lil Wolfie. He’s more of a spazzy goofball and I don’t quite recognize that hip cat up there. So, guess what? The lovely Brandy over at Baby Blackbird has featured Wolfie as one of her cool Small Style Icons today. So sweet! Brandy’s blog is terrific, if you haven’t been you must. She is always featuring amazingly stylish kid’s clothing. And of course, I’d be thrilled if you swung by and had a little look at my sweet little Wolfers. Check it out here!

Modern Kiddo Abroad :: Alice’s Family Trip to Sweden

I think it is well known that I love all things Swedish.  Alas, I have yet to make it there in person. Hearing stories from other people’s trips just gets me more and more excited and I know I’ll get there one of these days!

Today, I’m going to travel there vicariously through one of our readers, the lovely Alice Jonsson. Alice offered to serve as roving reporter and chat with us about her recent trip to Sweden with her darling family—including her adorable boy Jake and her beautiful daughter Lena. Take it away Alice!

Greetings Modern Kiddo readers! My name is Alice. This June we were able to finally bring our kids to the beautiful country of Sweden.  My husband Patrik lived there until he was ten and his family summers were spent on Prast Grundet, a lovely island in the Upper Baltic.  It was used for three hundred years as a fishing outpost by Patrik’s family until the middle of the 20th century. Since then its little red houses have been used  for vacationing and soaking up the precious sunlight that bathes Sweden in the late spring and summer. This was our first trip there with our five-year-old, Jake, and our one-year-old, Lena.

Until recently there was no electricity on Prast Grundet. You use old fashioned pumps to fill buckets of water and schlep them to the cottages. There is also a large number of really darling outhouses. All of these rustic factors become a fun part of the rhythm of life on ‘Grunna’. There is no commerce on the tiny island. It’s mainly solar-powered cottages for about twenty families, an old church, a quaint old bakery with a wood oven that still works, and a sweet little lighthouse.

(Lena’s outfit: red, white, and blue skirt – KappAhl , white ruffle shirt, Old Navy, sneakers, Converse)

It was a big moment for the whole family to finally be together on the island, with the first batch of grandkids. If any of you Modern Kiddo readers have a spouse from another country, I’m sure you understand the challenges of raising a child to understand that they have this deep connection to another place.

(wearing grandma’s hat!)

The kids don’t speak Swedish yet, and we’re still figuring out how to introduce the Swedish language into our home. It’s so important for many reasons—and it does slow communication down. It also doesn’t help that most Swedes speak English terrifically, so really it’s their fault for making it so easy for us to be lazy!!

The kids loved being outside so much. Jake was crazy for the net-fishing expeditions.  And of course eating fish right out of the Baltic makes us all happy.  The kids loved the flavor and didn’t even fuss over the bones! There is a very small rocky little island full of sea birds right next to Grunna.  We cruised over in an old wooden skiff that Jake declared ‘the worst boat on the island’ much to Patrik’s chagrin. We saw baby seagulls hatching right before our eyes. The light on the water is stunning this time of year when the day is a whopping twenty-two hours long!

(Lena’s outfit: fluorescent, flowery onesie, KappAhl, chambre bubble shorts, Gap, Sneakers, Converse)

Lena’s big moment was Midsommer. The islanders all build a maypole and decorate it with myriad flowers that grow all over the island in profuse quantity due to the long days. They sing classic children’s songs and dance around the pole with the kids before a great big feast. It’s truly wonderful!

(Lena’s outfit: light blue dress with tiny flowers, Gap 1969, espadrilles, Oshkosh)

For the last three days of the trip we went to Stockholm.  It was fantastic! I think my dream day is one filled with shopping and eating in a beautiful European city with the people I love. To be able to walk on cobblestone streets among such historic beauty with the family was a dream come true.  I know that sounds a bit corny, but it’s true!

Both children loved the Wasa Museum – a museum built around a colossal 17th century warship.  Mostly they enjoyed the ferry rides.  And the ice cream, of course!

The best part of travelling with kids is staring at them while they stare  wide-eyed at the wonders surrounding them. We are truly blessed.

Thank you so much Alice, for sharing your Swedish travels with us! Tack så mycket!

Hot Dog! It’s the Vintage Kiddo Retro Round Up!!

Hi hi everyone! Did you have a good weekend. I did–although it did not involve going to Harry Potter, which is KILLING me, but it did involve hanging with the Peach, some early morning sewing, brekkie with friends, lunch with family and just a whole lot of fun all around.  But my weekend wouldn’t be complete without a little e-thrifting. And I got some sweet ones to share with you!

So, on with the show!

I am DYING over this perfect flower power booster seat! And in perfection condition, no less. From Etsy seller, Sweet Lucie’s.

It is a well known fact that I have a true weakness for gingham.  Which means this little cutie patootie coat is causing me to swoon. From Etsy seller, Young Team 1981.

Giddy up! Don’t you just love this 70s green stripey friend? From our friend, Ebay seller,  Robot Parade for  Kids!

Where do you find these gems, Ms. Tips? Rooster? Ric rac? It is almost too much for me to handle!

Etsy seller Adalou Vintage has a couple of sweet and incredibly well priced little puzzles that are perfect for popping into back packs for fun on the road or at a restaurant.  Doctor or cowboy? We’ll take both!

Gah! Check out this darling little green denim set for boys. The V shirt is perfection. Right out of Bobby Draper’s wardrobe. AND it’s new old stock. Gah!  From Ebay seller La Douchka Vintage.

As you know we are big fans of vintage Disney, so I squealed with delight when I saw this sweet gem of an album from Etsy seller, Sam & Milly Vintage.

These ruffly overalls would have been perfect for the Peach what with her orange obsession.  From Etsy seller, Sweet Shop Vintage.

Just imagine bringing a bowl of chicken and stars soup to your snuffly bed-bound kiddo on this sweet vintage tray! Sure to coax a smile from anyone! From Etsy seller, B. Inspired Vintage.

Alix hipped me to this new vintage kiddo seller, Little Eero, who has oodles of pretty pieces.  Like this perfect little sky blue beauty that would be a great addition to any girl’s wardrobe.

Oh this book is like a boy version of Madeline based in London.  Which makes it awesome.  Oh Zachary Zween, what a life you live! Nice find, Lishyloo!

Happy Monday, friends!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Cool Stuff to Browse

HAPPY FRIDAY folks! Here are some super fun and groovy things that caught my eye this past week. They’ll make some fine browsin’ for you to check out today or over the weekend! Oooooh, and hands up, who’s going to see Harry Potter??? I know I am! K, let’s check out some cool stuff.

1. THE FRESHEST COLORING BOOK AROUND.

Nothing beats analog for kiddos, but I am definitely enjoying the creative apps being created for the young digi-set. HeyHey Colors is one of my new faves. The perfect combination of hip and childlike, HeyHey Colors brings the colorful world of street artist Bue the Warrior to a quirky cool iPad coloring book. Check it out here.

2. BROOKYN CIRCA 1974

I love looking at old photos and the ones from the 70s are always particularly groovy. This set of images from Brooklyn in 1974 is right up my ally. See more here (via ISO50 ).

3. KLT:WORKS MAKES SWEET DADDY & SON CARDIES

If you know me, you know I love a good cardigan. And these matching daddy and son (or daddy and daughter) cardigans from the super cool Kristin of klt:works are SO GREAT! Featuring her infamous owl, I think I will be ordering a set for Greg and Wolfie very very soon! (Hmmm, or maybe me and Wolfie! heh) Buy yours here.

4. SUPER ACTION PACKED

Dottie tipped me off to this awesome magazine for kiddos and I have to say it looks pretty cool folks. Action Pack is a fab Mini-Mag for kids that was created to inspire creativity and challenge their imagination. Each magazine is jam packed with 20+ pages of science experiments, easy and delicious recipes, simple craft projects that require minimal adult supervision and outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Best of all? NO ADS! Five bones ($5).

5. DIVYA IS DOPE.

I first met Divya Srinivasan several years ago through my work. She is a wonderfully talented illustrator and animator. You might know her if you have a copy of They Might Be Giants: Here Come the ABCs on DVD. (She did one of my favorites, “Go for G!”) Or if you have Sufjan Steven’s album Illinois. Or saw the film Waking Life. Yeah she’s pretty good.

The sweet Miss Divya is releasing her first children’s book. And it looks adorable. Here is a little “trailer” sneak peak!

6. FANCY LIDS.

OK. I am currently not biking much. But when and if I do, I think I really need one of these bike helmets from Yakkay. Have you ever seen anything SO CUTE?

7. CREEPY COOL DOGS.

These kind of creep me out, yet I think it’s pretty darn clever. You thread pasta through hot dogs (or veggie dogs!) before cooking and then they come out all wiggly and attached to the dogs. Kinda cool! You know, in a grody fun way. See more via quick-dish

8. SARAH JESSICA, HOMEMAKER.

I have a fondness for Sarah Jessica Parker. As over done as the whole Sex and the City thing was (and truly, that last movie? *shudder*) I thought Carrie Bradshaw was an amazingly cool character. Over 30! Chic! A hard working independent gal! I’m always intrigued by what SJP is up to and love Matthew Broderick. She is notoriously private, so I thought this spread in British Vogue was very interesting. Her twins are quite cute! See more photos here.

9. PRETTIEST LITTLE PIXELS.

Ex-Pixar animator creates beautiful e-book for children. ’nuff said. Just watch.

10. HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Harry. Our house is BUSTIN’ with excitement. This past year was a huge one for Wolfie as he discovered the wonderful world of Harry Potter. Both the books and the movies. Of course the books are the most magical but I do think the movies are every bit as wonderful. I think we have probably seen each one of them 10 times over the course of the year. I will say that we weren’t sure if they would be too scary for our little first grader. We started with the first and before you could say “expecto patronum!” he was utterly obsessed. We would finish one and he would beg to see the next one. I think watching the DVDs at home is much less scary—it’s not a dark movie theater, we can pause and discuss and of course cuddle up on the couch. Wolfie has been known to wander around mumbling spells, he loves it that much. We should probably do an entire post devoted to Pottermania, but for now, check out this fantastic collection of work done by artists celebrating their love of Harry Potter!

Have an amazing weekend my friends. Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Dottie Kraft Korner :: Book Review 1,2,3 Sewing

We have a very special Dottie’s Kraft Korner today… a book review!

I was sent a copy of the wonderful Ellen Luckett Baker’s new book, 123 Sew: Build Your Skills with 33 Simple Projects to review. Ellen is also the mastermind behind one of my all time favorite craft blogs, The Long Thread.  This wonderful sewing book is a terrific investment for the neophyte seamstress who is looking for a way to improve her skills through projects gradually.  Mind you, I think even a more accomplished sewer would still enjoy this book since Ellen fills it with such charming and useful projects as these.

I love Ellen’s design sensibility and her clever projects. This is a woman who gets nap-time sewing. And I thought the “Change Your Mind Skirt” for little girls was the perfect pattern for me to try.

Friends, I made this nifty little skirt over the course of a half hour sitcom. The hardest part was deciding what fabrics to use. So simple, thanks to Ellen’s abundant little diagrams that dispel any confusion from your sewing experience. Thanks for that, Ellen.

And the Peach. Well, she adores this special skirt. She can’t make up her mind which side she likes best. P

Yup. I plan on making several more of these sassy, sweet skirts over the summer. Oh, the color combos one could do…

Check out more reviews of Ellen’s book, 123 Sew:  Build Your Skills with 33 Simple Projects here and do stop by Crafty Pod for the next one!

Happy sewing, friends!
