Real Life:: Tupperware ParTAY!

What do you get when you add plastic kitchen goods, a dozen ladies and ten bottles of champagne?

A hoot of a Tupperware party! (Oh, and I know what you WERE thinking, ahem!)

Last Saturday a bunch of wonderful ladies came over to my house for a Tupperware party. Yup.  Tupperware, and it was so much darn fun!  My gal pals showed up wearing their best vintage aprons and even gloves (thank you Miss Karen) and listened with delight about the miracles of plastic while sipping mimosa after bellini after vodka gimlet.  Oh, that was such a blast!

But that had to do with our wonderful Tupperware hostess, the completely fabulous Ms. Karen Finlay.  Now, you might recall Karen, who guest blogged here about her love of the musical Annie.  But this wonderful lady also sells Tupperware.  And her Tupperware team includes the creme de la creme of Tupperware sales people including such faaaabulous drag queens named Dixie Liongate, Aunt Barbara and Danny Pintauro from Who’s the Boss. (Note — Karen hasn’t met him, but she’s  sure he’s very nice!)

It is more of a comedy routine than a Tupperware spiel.  I swear, Karen should have a brick wall behind her–she is comedy gold! And I gotta say, I was totally impressed!  Tupperware products scored the best out of 30+ products in a Good Housekeeping microwave test and contain no BPA or phthalates.  Which makes this mama breathe a sigh of relief.

And it was so much fun to see the ladies. Like our girl Katie who brought a peach for the Peach! J’adore!

Speaking of the Peach, she had a great time too and sported an orange vintage apron to match her Crocs. She looked more like Mario Batali than Sally Draper–I love it!

Such fun for a Saturday afternoon! Have you ever attended a Tupperware party? Do you remember your Mom going to one or throwing one? Did you grow up with Tupperware?

60s Photographer Slim Aarons and the Beautiful People

Gather round my friends! I’m on vacation, but I have a little fun eye candy to share. Have you seen the posh world of photographer Slim Aarons? If not I think you’ll love it. Slim’s camera lense perfectly captured the jet set glitterati of the 50s and 60s. His subjects were primarily upscale and wealthy, from young Hollywood starlets to Pucci-clad Italian princesses and WASPy American socialites. His photos have this amazing combination of day-in-the-life and other-worldliness. Let’s be clear though, this “day-in-the-life”  is a slice of life like no other! It has been said that Slim perfected the “environmental portrait,” so rather than having his subjects pose in the traditional stiff-n-formal manner, he featured people in their natural environment. Slim said it best, he photographed “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” I love that. (I also love how I keep calling him Slim, like we were best pals or something…) Such a great way to have documented this lost era of style.
His images have been very influential on modern day photographers—and while his work is often imitated, nothing beats the real deal.

Here is the brilliant Babe Paley, chillin’ by the pool in 1959. I really love old socialite names…

This is one of his most famous pieces, featuring American socialite CZ Guest wandering poolside with her little boy and their pups. (see? another grand name!)

“Two bikini-clad holidaymakers enjoy a glass of wine outside the Carlton Hotel, Cannes.”
I wonder….is a holidaymaker like a freshmaker? I think I shall refer to myself as a holidaymaker from now on.

And apparently I must always carry a drink in hand.

Oh, you crazy white people!

This must have been closer to the early 70s…the swingin’ young crowd. The names on the credits for this image are awesome:

“Circa 1970, British photographer Lord Lichfield holding a Hasselblad camera. On his arm is Marina Lante della Rovere, to the left is Ines Torlonia, and reclining is Signoria Gancia, Porto Ercole, Italy.”

I love this “couple” shots. A rolls, two dogs and some far out psychedelic pants are all a fella really needs. I almost don’t even notice her glam lounge wear. Almost.

This next dapper gent kills me…so rich, so orange! And that’s quite a deep dish couch, m’lady is lounging on.

Slim photographed many well known “celebs” of the day. Here we have Truman Capote “relaxing with a book and a cigarette”. And five ceramic cats.

Yes. It’s Joan Collins. And yes. Her poodle is pink.

Mexican film starlet Dolores Del Rio and her itsy bitsy teeny weeny bandeau top.

And finally….

This is exactly how I take my breakfast—in bed, with my monocle and a slice of melon. FABULOUS!
Sigh. Call me crazy but I just love the weird WASP-y world of Slim Aarons.  Signing off, your intrepid Holidaymaker….

Pssst! Hey you guys!

We have had a most amazing vacation. First sizzling hot Myrtle Beach, then the cool waters of our Michigan lakehouse getaway. We leave Michigan this evening and we’re very sad but it will be good to get back home and see the kitties and sleep in our own beds. Of course, then we head down to San Diego for Tiki Oasis for my birthday. (We hadn’t planned on such an action packed summer! The San Diego trip was booked long before we figured out Grandparents Tour 2011…) I have to say that I’ve missed you guys and can’t wait to share all my photos. Also, big ol love to my lovely pal Dottie for holding down Camp Kiddo while I was gone!! *Mwuah!*

Vintage Kiddo Retro Round Up!

Did you hall have a lovely time this weekend? There was a lot hellos and goodbyes this weekend but a lot of fun all around include the fixing of my bike and bike rides! Yay! But more importantly, I had a bit of time to do some online shopping for all sorts of vintage goodies for today’s round up! I think Lish has my favorite item. See below. Tee hee!!!

I’ll raise your brontosaurus with this red polkadotted dinosaur on these sweet shortalls.  From the Littlest Shop!

There are many reports that show that playing an instrument is great for kiddos developing brains.  And I love this vintage Fisher Price one. So sweet! And it’s the whole set too. Nice find Sweet Shop Vintage!

This dress does something to me.  Somebody, please buy this for a pregnant friend who is expecting a girl. Because it is the sweetest most girly wonderful thing I’ve ever seen!  From our girl Heather over at 3 Ring Circus!

Oh no! Rock’s first family is in big trouble!  But you can read it all thanks for Lish’s great find. Hee hee!  Sadly, the jaunty photo of kids playing their instruments doesn’t really jibe with the title, NIGHT OF TERROR, but I’m willing to go with it.  If you buy it, please tell us how it ends–the suspense is killing me!

With half of the US sweltering, this type of little vintage sun suit looks about just the right amount of clothes for a little girl to wear. Oof so hot! From Nanna’s Attic

I have such a soft spot for Heatlh Tex little graphic shirts. And this umbrella one might be my favorite.

Baby moccasins are a huge trend right now, but it is rare that you can find the original ones, but Ebay seller, Robot Parade 4 Kids found some in beautiful condition and they are cheaper than the one’s I’ve seen in boutiques!  Gorgeous!

These vintage barrettes are killing me!  The lion and the zebra?  So sweet! From Etsy seller, Blue Bird Lucy.

Whoa! Check out this sweet combo–bell bottoms and the grooviest boys top EVER! I think the pieces separately would be terrific additions to any young lad’s combo.  Like that shirt underneath a cool single colored boys t-shirt? From Etsy seller, Mrs. PS Brain.

I’m *THIS* close to making my own play dough, but it just isn’t the same unless you have one of these sweet Play Doh factories to make tubes and Play Doh spaghetti! From Etsy seller, Jinxxy.

So. Darn. Adorable. And the dress is cute too. From Etsy seller, Salvage House.

Happy Monday, folks!
