clean happy {and win a trip to san francisco!}

Ratta tat tat! Ratta tat tat! Method Mania is kicking off with a bang! By now you know we are pleased as punch to be partnering with these guys as official Method Mavens and today we’re excited to share with you a super fun video that will tell you what it really means to CLEAN HAPPY!

Before we get to the video though, we thought it would be a good idea to talk to you about one of the reasons we love these guys so much. Of course their products smell beautiful and look amazing. But they also clean like crazy and are better for the environment and —most importantly— you and your family.

The makers of method don’t use icky additives like parabens, phosphates, ammonia, chlorine bleach, and a slew of other yucko chemicals because of their known adverse side effects. This is really important to us! We’ll be talking about these more in the coming months as we test-drive specific products and let you know what we think of them!

OK, so are you ready to see the video? It’s really adorable. Be on the look out for the light bright-esque color wall. The pegs? All colorful bottles of method hand soap! Clever, clever!

So fun, right? It really captures the quirky and very lovable spirit of the entire company. (Did we mention that the video features method employees?? Including that bad ass skateboarder!) But now HOLD UP a second. You didn’t think we were just gonna spend every post braaaaging about our awesome trip and yackity yacking about how cool the peeps of method were and just have you take our word for it??? Oh no, my friends. We want YOU to come out to San Francisco and see for yourselves!

Yep, it’s true. You could win a trip for two to the colorful method headquarters in San Francisco, lunch with Eric and Adam (the awesome method co-founders), AND win a year’s supply of rockin’ method products! How cool is THAT?? To enter, simply head on over to the method facebook page. The sweepstakes starts today March 12, 2012 @ 06:00 am (PDT). Enter soon because the contest ends April 03, 2012 @ 11:59 pm (PDT). Good luck!!!!!

Yeehaw! A Widdle Western for Today!

Hey folks, I’m at SXSW in Texas this week for work managing some panels for my company.  I’ve been inspired by the Lone Star so much that is has trickled down to this week’s Retro Round Up with some sweet Western goods.

Would you look at this two piece of western wonderfulness?  How much fun would this coat be over just a t-shirt with some jeans or khakis?  From Etsy seller Box of Hollyhocks.

Behold: the perfect little girl’s western shirt.  Yes, please!  From our friends from Ebay who now has an Etsy shop, the Robot Parade. SWEET!

Sometimes kiddos can’t deal with the heel of a cowboy boot, so why don’t you try these vintage Western boot galoshes. Lower heel and great for the rain too boot!  From Etsy seller, Atomic Retro Girl.

I must admit, I probably wouldn’t play this stunning vintage picture record, but wouldn’t it look cute on the wall? So darling! From Etsy seller, Lottzafunstuff!

Now, THESE vintage cowboy boots are the official winner.  Seriously. How could I not include these beauts?  From Etsy seller, In with the old.

Now, this is a vintage western shirt that is actually cozy cozy flannel because it is a pajama top.  Mmm…. From Etsy seller, Haoli.

Oh, so darn cute. Baby town cute cute.  CUTE!  Who wouldn’t want to grab this little cowboy for a cuddle and giggle with delight! From Etsy seller, Vintage Jewelery Antiques.

Who doesn’t want to play Western town when Fisher Price is involved? Like with this great toy set. From Etsy seller, The Pantages.

Yes, I did feature a great vintage cowboy or two, but let’s get a little nod to the pioneer girl with this lovely little retro dress from 1950s.  From Etsy seller Golden Owl Vintage.

A book about cowboys?  Now, you KNOW that is a good book worth getting it. From Etsy seller, Caddywampus.

Happy Monday, folks!

I’ve been done in LA again for work. It’s tough. I love the people I’m working with but I sure miss my fellas. As I sat in my hotel room, I got caught up on some bloggy reading—and here are some things that caught my eye!

1. Color, Color, Color

Ahhhh. This Colorful Homes Tumbler is filled with so many bright and amazing spaces, you’ll fill your Pinterest boards in the blink of an eye.

2. SMOOTH CRIMINALS

These lady mug shots from the 1920s are completely fascinating. You have to check them out!

3. PARTY ANIMALS

I was so completely charmed by Jordan’s idea—taking your kiddo’s toys and adding little party hats to them for a birthday. So clever and sweet! And then this week she posted these fun little ice cream cone roses. Pretty!

4. SNOW WHITE & RAVEN BLACK

Did you see the wedding of my gorgeous friends Miss James & Aubrey? It was like something out of a rustic indie storybook. Lots of blogs featured it, but I was just looking at them again the other day and was struck by how beautiful it was. So just in case you missed it, see it here and here! (Beautiful photography by Brooke Schwab)

5. GOLDEN TOES

A year or so Kate Spade came out with these really sassy flats that had neon pink toes. I loved ’em but they were a tad pricey. So when I spied these yellow  babies at Old Navy, I couldn’t resist. They are super cute and comfy—and I feel like I have a little piece of sunshine peeking out from under. They are also available in a royal blue.

6. PRETTY IN PINK

I’m a big fan of down & dirty crafting—easy peasy projects that you can do in a snap. I was totally charmed by Jenny’s quick change act on this adorable, but slightly stained vintage dressie! Little Dorothy looked amazing in the finished product! You’ll die from the cuteness.

7. STYLE STUNNER

I spied the Charlotte Taylor 2012 fall look book on Honey Kennedy and I’m obsessed with the colors, the girl’s hair….and that owl.

8. COCOA TEA TIME

I have three words for you: chocolate earl grey cake. Tracy really is the queen of yum. (Earl Grey counts as one word in my book….)

9. TOY BOX TREASURES

Jamie Horton takes photos of your children’s favorite toys and turns them into fine art. SO cool.

10. HUNGER GAMES IS COMING!!!!!!

I’m so excited. And so is my mom. I devoured the series over the summer and told her she had to read them….and she was hooked! I can’t WAIT for the movie. Are you a Hunger Games fan?? I think my mom might even be more obsessed than me—I bought her a copy of this People Magazine Hunger Games Special Edition and she was thrilled! (Hi mom!)

As an aside, I’m now reading Game of Thrones….whooooo mama. I’m on book three and it’s a brutal (but amazing) series. People die left and right. It’s frustrating at times, but really well done. I’m totally into them. Anyone tackling this series??

Last Week, We Cleaned Up Our Act.

Last week Dottie and I were thrilled to participate in a very special event, thanks to our wonderful friends at method. They are one of my very favorite cleaning products, with a line that is as stylish as it is smart & eco-friendly. When they approached us about working with them, Dottie and I knew it was a perfect fit. Dottie is especially concerned with finding cleaning products that are tough on dirt but are natural and eco-friendly. And I’m a packaging victim who is dazzled by pretty colors. Just kiddin’. Sorta. If you follow us on instagram (@galexina & @missdottie) then you might have seen some of the photos we posted! It was a unique 2 day event for a small group of bloggers from all across the country, and man oh man did we have fun!

Here’s what went down. The kind folks of method flew everyone in on a Thursday. That night we had a lovely “getting to know you” dinner and then went to the groovy Hotel Monaco to call it a night. Yep, even though Dottie and I are local, they booked us each a room so we could relax and be a part of the whole event without having to dash back and forth. It was pretty luxurious staying at a hotel in your own home town!

The next morning we all hopped aboard a little shuttle bus to head on over to method headquarters to meet the team and start our day. As we turned a corner, we suddenly heard gasps coming from the ladies seated at the front of the bus. We craned our necks to look out the window, and saw the entire company lining the streets with balloons—clapping and cheering for us. It was so thoughtful and charming and unexpected, and definitely a sign of  great things to come!

The day was spent immersing ourselves in the method culture. We learned about the company’s history, chatted about the importance of great design, smelled oodles of yummy new fragrances, talked at length about how important sustainability is and how being “green” infuses everything they do. It was an action packed day filled with a real passion and warmth that was completely infectious! I was a fan before, but I really learned SO much that day. The most impressive thing were the people. This wasn’t a hard-sell, schmoozy crowd. These were funny, real, awesome folk who truly believe in what they do. They shared their many success stories but I was impressed that they also shared some of their failures—explaining what they learned from things that didn’t work out the way they planned.

Oh, these are the two cool guys behind the entire method family, Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry:

The other awesome part of our weekend was meeting up with so many other fabulous bloggers. There were lots of familiar faces and many new wonderful friendships made.

(ok, Victoria {sfgirlbybay} isn’t exactly new….but she *is* one of our favorite SF pals!)

above: with bloggin’ cutie Dani Hampton {sometimes sweet} below: and lovely Liz Stanley {say yes to hoboken}

left: the gorgeous girls with glasses brooke & summer and the sparklin’ jordan ferney {OhHappyDay} // right: the supah sassy susan peterson {Freshly-Picked}

We got to experience lotsa product—including their latest fragrances:  lime + sea salt, coconut grove, and daffodil bouquet. Here’s my gal Dottie washin’ her hands and experiencing the different fragrance “notes”….yes friends. Soap has NOTES.

Ahhhh. watch the bloggers come clean:

above: the fab EZ Pudewa {creature comforts}, the stunning Denene Millner {MyBrownBaby}, darlin’ Dani, and the adorable Illana Wiles {Mommy Shorts} // below: Dottie scopin’ out some early product designs right outta the method sketch book.

How cute is this?? mickey smelled like lemonade, minnie smelled like strawberries.

Then we got a little sneaky peek of things to come, thanks to Mekanism—the geniusy agency who created their new campaign. It’s as colorful, quirky and cool as the people of method….we can’t wait to share it with you.

Yes, that wall lit up. And no, it’s not affiliated with any bright lite toys of the 70s (ahem) but it was reeeeally cool.

The vibe was really one of positivity and fun and I think all of us “Method Mavens” (as the team dubbed us) were kind of grinning from ear to ear the whole time. Of course the main focus of this event was to learn more about method, but I have to tell you people…..these guys really spoiled us silly. Apologies if this next part sounds a little braggadocious, but it’s more about wanting to share with you how generous and thoughtful these guys were. In addition to our wonderful opening night meal, we had a fun photoshoot (see above), completed a DIY project with Danny Seo and got to check out the latest method book on a complimentary Kindle Fire. Yeah. We each got one. Wowzers.

As if that weren’t enough, on Friday night we were treated to a “clandestine dining” experience. The Stag Dining group is a collective of chefs that host traveling dinners, in unique locals. Method asked them to base our 5-course meal around some of the method fragrance profiles (water+ citrus, herbaceous, fruity etc). And holy moley, it was a meal unlike any other!!

Did I mention it was held at the William Westerfeld House? It’s an infamous, huge Victorian that used to be the Russian Embassy. The place was four stories of decadent Victorian maddness. With ornate chandeliers and taxidermy for days, I felt like I was in a real life version of the board game Clue.

At the end we went around the loooong dining room table and were asked to sum up the two day’s experience in one word. I think they were hoping for things like “informative” “inspiring” “designy”…..but truly friends, I had to bust out this one:

So what does this all mean? It means that in the coming months we have lots of awesome goodness coming your way. We’ll be sharing more fun stories, talking about the importance of cleaning with products that are better for the environment (AND you & your family), plus test-driving new products. We’ll even be giving you guys the chance to try ’em out for yourself and would love to know what you think. As for us:

A special thanks to dani //sometimes sweet for letting me snag some of her photos for this post.

The Peach’s Balloon Birthday Party

Hoo boy!  I’m exhausted just remembering this party.

Since we invested most of the Peach’s birthday funds into a new play house, we were determined not to spend a lot of money on her party.  I set the budget at $50, so the mantra for the party was Cheap and Cheerful!  We ditched the idea of having helium balloons since that was too spendy for us.  Instead Eric and I watched a few YouTube videos and learned how to make balloon dogs, swords and flowers.  Perfect! Manned with only $20 I headed to the party store and left with cheap plain party hats, some kinda weird ruffly edging stuff and bag of biodegradable balloons.

I used water balloons at $1.39 for a pack of 60 to make a balloon banner which was inspired by one I saw on Pinterest.

I loved the idea of kids running around in fun and fancy party hats! So I jazzed up these plain jane hats with some white sticker dots I picked up from an office supply store and some leftover washi tape I bought last year from Paper Source. And I used that super cheap paper mache rainbow stuff to edge the bottoms of the hats. I did it in less than an hour, while watching Parks & Recreation and 30 Rock.

I gotta say the kids loved ’em and wore the heck out of ’em!

And the last balloon accent to this party was this nutty idea I had to create little balloon doggie stuffed animals.  After two weeks of trial, I made some cute little friends as giveaways for the kiddos.  I made them out of lycra scraps which cost no more than $15 all together.

And the kids loved ’em! AS you can imagine, Molly here took the yellow one…

I must admit, the Peach was tickled pink with her little play house. And a lot of the party action happened outside in the play house.  Please note–Miss Peach picked out her entire outfit herself including her boots!

And everyone loved the balloons!

The Peach had a very specific menu she wanted: lemonade, pizza and vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting and rainbow sprinkles. DONE! In fact, she was so tickled pink with her cupcakes that she just grabbed one and started eating it without a candle so we had to start singing “Happy Birthday” as she nommed away.

But what the Peach really enjoyed more than anything else was playing with her friends!

You always worry a bit about how your little kiddo will respond to hanging with a bunch of kids. Some she knew well and some were children of my friends that she sees maybe every six months. And I must say there were several times I beamed with pride over my little girl’s inherent goodness.  Miss Peach was drinking her lemonade when another little girl came up to her and said she was thirsty.  Miss Peach immediately took her little tea cup of lemonade from her own lips and raised the cup up to the little girl’s lips to drink.  Outside, some of the older girls had commandeered the playhouse and wouldn’t let little Finn in. He came crying over to the Peach, who immediately took his hand and marched over to the playhouse, knocked on the door and demanded those big girls play with Finn. Attagirl!  No “How not to be a mean girl” classes for you!

As you can imagine we tucked in be a very happy albeit very tired little three year old into her bed last night.

“Cheap and Cheerful” can still produce some pretty priceless memories!
