CRAFTOBER:: My Peachy Princess!

What a fun crafty month, it has been!  I’ve certainly been spending more time this month than in the past year glue-gunning, modge-podging and sewing my little heart out. And all for a specific little project. A certain little someone’s innocent Halloween costume request.

“Mama, I am going to be an orange princess for Halloween!” the Peach declared one day.

Hmmm… Not pink (which would have been easy..to buy, that is) but orange. Her favorite color. Hoo boy.

OK.

I first ran to Beverly’s the closest craft/fabric store I could get to and lo and behold orange satiny fabric was on sale–$4.00 a yard. HUZZAH! I snatch up four yards and some other stuff along with this pattern.  It has easy on the the pattern envelope and I’ve owned a sewing machine for thirty years. how hard could it be?

It turns out pretty hard.  Like stab a seam ripper in my eye hard at times.

Well, not necessarily hard, but time consuming, filled with little steps and the fabric was a total nightmare. Hard to press, and if you look at it wrong, it will freak out on you.

But once I got into sewing it, I began to slowly fall back in love with sewing.  And I let my craft flag fly! I even turned a bachelorette crown topped with wee gentlemen parts into a sassy orange glittery rhinestone.

So, how did the final dress turn out?  Well, someone really likes it! And that is the most important thing. I tried to sparkle it up with more lace and lacing. And wee bit of pink.  The Peach gasped with happiness when she saw herself in the mirror. Twelve hours and $50 worth of fabric and ribbon and netting netted the happiest little orange princess around.

Just don’t look too close at the hem. That’s all I ask…

How was your crafty month? What are you working on right now?

Girls! Girls! Girls!

I have been following Alicia Paulson’s blog, Posie Gets Cozy since it started. I’ve been with her through all of the writing of her books and so many wonderful meals and crafts and home decor changes. And her writing is, well, magical.  I was heartbroken over their adoption woes almost a year ago. I don’t think I’d ever met two people more worthy. Perhaps because of that, it is even more joyful that they just adopted the most stunning little girl, Amelia. Congrats, you two!

Since I can’t come barreling into their home with chicken soup and popovers, I’ll just have to settle with dedicating this week’s vintage kiddo round up to all things baby girl.

Who wouldn’t go a little ga ga over this sweet little plaid and ricrac shirt. Can’t you just see that with a little diaper cover crawling your way? That’s a good time! From Lishyloo!

Make your baby girl’s early meals a treat for both of you with this wonderful little divided bowl warmer. Love! From Etsy seller, Bella Bordello.

This is the kind of sweet baby dress I would put on Miss Peach and just sit her on a picnic blanket and stare at her because she was so stinking cute in those little baby dresses.  Sigh. I wish I put her in more of those dresses. From Etsy seller, Hey Sweetie Pie.

I want these. In my size… From Etsy seller, Vintage Memory.

OK–how could I not include this baby dress? With it’s little smocked top?  From Etsy seller, 1 Sweet Dream Vintage.

Every baby deserves a little quilt, right? Like this vintage baby quilt, which is killing me with its adorableness.  Almost can’t stand it! ALMOST! From Etsy seller, A Pear’s Vintage Goodies.

MsTips described the color of this little matching knit outfit as egg yolk and I LOVE IT! So sunny, just like your wee baby girl wearing it! Love!

Oh for cry-eye! This sassy little romper  is so cute, I want to pinch it. Peekaboo kitty! From Etsy seller, La di Dottie.

This little Irmi lamp is the perfect addition to your wee girlie’s room! From Etsy seller, Ramshackle Villa.

Oh baby sweaters. So sweet and so soft. Like this little white one made of soft poly that you can toss in the washing if baby spits up on it. Perfect! From Etsy seller, My Grandmother’s Trunk.

Happy Monday! And congrats, Alicia and Andy! xo!

It’s our Annual Creepy Cool Vintage Halloween Mask Tribute

A few year’s ago I was out and about and ended up in one of those Halloween Super Stores. I have to tell ya friends, it was a terrifying experience. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a little spooky action. But I was totally freaked out by all the ultra creepy masks. Psychotic clowns. Rotting zombie chain saw massacre guy. Random murderers. That creeper from the Saw movies. Besides being totally disturbing I was a little bummed. “Where are the cute costumes?? Who lets their kid dress up as a crazy axe murderer??!” I shook my head, “It’s not like back in the day when we were kids!”

Then again, hold up a second. Maybe I’m not totally remember things correctly. I mean, while most of the costumes back in the day were under the guise innocent characters, most of those old school Halloween masks were positively twisted. Case in point:

Of course creepy Raggedy Anne is still kinder than the Texas Chainsaw dude. The cheap plastic only adds to the charm.  Every year I like to round up some of my favorite Creepy Masks. Here are some of my favorites this year!

I know people have a problem with clowns, but how can you hate on these two cuties? That duck and leopard are another story. The leopard looks like he (she?) fell victim to the old, “It’s cold outside, you need to wear a coat under that costume!” syndrome.

While we’re talking leopard, this is a little more jolly looking….except what’s up with that leering pumpkin??

LOVE these guys. Bat Man looks so serious. And the crazy google eyed skull boy, casually munching cookies? Priceless.

Ahhhhhhhhh! These two would have scared the pants offa me.

Is it me, or does Superman have a mustache??

Hurray for the Halloween Parade! You Go, Paper Bag Owl!

Photobucket

I loooooove a good group shot. So much awesomeness going on here. He-Man has such delicate eyebrows. And Zorro is looking positively Zsa Zsa (looks like someone has had a little filler in them thar cheek bones, eh?? ). The lady ghost is so stylish with her little mask….and who is that purple fella? He looks familiar. Hmm.

Oh little Snoopy and those sweet little hands….he’s not too happy being next to Skeltor. Or whoever that dude is.

Ayyyyyyyyy!! These kids are all adorable, but I’m reaaallly liking The Fonz. I’m not really liking that creepy doll perched on the right back there.
Photobucket

I want to be Super Friends with THESE cuties!

Oh dear. I initially picked this for the faboosh “princess on the half shell” mask….and that werid thing on the end (is he in profile? is he facing straight forward? who knows!). How I failed to notice the, um, “tan” gent in the straw hat, I’ll never know. I’m going to have a little faith and assume he’s supposed to have been vacationing on a tropical island, hence his shoe polish face. Ack. Even the dog looks confused.
Photobucket

These lovely ladies are adorable….the twin pumpkin mask is so sweet! But I would have killed for the ice blue satin on the end…

This might be my favorite. I love the two beatniks (awesome!). The mantle figurines (rococo AND asian!). The saddle shoes on the snarky girl in the back (adorable). But the Voo Doo Jukebox???? Help me Rhonda!!!

I’m just realizing this is the same house as the girls on the couch! How did we miss the rogue corn cob placed “just so” on that side table??

And finally, the winner of the “Phoning It In” award…..

The Halloween Countdown is Officially ON!!!

Art With Heart + Method Designed for Good

By now you already know about our love for Method. This fall, they have launched a collection of two limited edition ‘Pink Your Sink‘ hand wash bottles. It’s a small but wonderful gesture, and one we think can go a long way in support of the fight against breast cancer.

It’s a sad truth that I think every woman has a story about Breast Cancer—whether they have had a personal experience, have known someone who has suffered, or simply a story that has touched their lives. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month this October, I wanted to share with you a story about one of my favorite artists: Margaret Kilgallen.

I have always felt a connection to her. I can remember the very first time I saw a piece of her artwork many many years ago. I was immediately drawn to the hand lettering and folky/vintage sensibility of the pieces. I thought she had such a cool and interesting style. I also loved that she was a grafitti artist, because there are so few women out there doing that. I had heard she was married to Barry McGee (aka TWIST) who is also an amazing artist (and graffiti artist ). I thought “Wow, they are the coolest couple EVER!” The two of them quickly rose to fame as leaders of the Mission School art movement that developed here in San Francisco in the late 90s. Both would go on to become pretty major players in the modern-day art world.

Margaret’s shows were often huge installations with massive images painted right onto the walls of the space. If you were lucky you could also spot her work throughout the city—guerilla style. Instead of the usual urban hipster angst, her influences were drawn from rural inspiration: hand-drawn signage, hobo train writing, and Appalachian banjo music:

In 2003 I became pregnant and for my birthday Greg took me to Vancouver for a little getaway. We went to the Vancouver Art Gallery which had a huge installation of her work. Surrounded by the bold, beautiful images, I was once again transfixed. As I sat on a small bench and read her bio, I was startled to realize she had passed away a few years ago. She was only 33. As tragic as it was, the story has an even more bittersweet turn. Margaret learned that she had developed breast cancer. It was at this time she also discovered that she was pregnant. As a result, she had to make the heartbreaking decision—continue with treatment or have the baby. She chose to have a child. Her little girl Asha was born on June 7. A few short weeks later on June 26, Margaret Kilgallen passed away in the arms of her husband Barry. Reading the story I was heartbroken and moved to tears. I can’t imagine having to make such a decision. And I can’t imagine what it must have been like for Barry—to lose your partner so soon after you both bring a chid into the world.

Margaret’s work is still extremely influential and so many artists have been inspired by her. Because of the nature of her work (grafitti-style and murals) there really isn’t a ton of her work flying around. We were really fortunate to purchase a piece of hers back in 2005 from Paulson Press. It was the first real “art” we have ever bought and we really treasure it.

A year ago I had my annual “lady exam” and had a brief scare with a suspicious lump. I remember sitting in the doctor’s office and suddenly felt like my world was about to unravel. We tend to take our health for granted, plowing through life. Thankfully I was fine. But many other women have a different end to their story….which is why I was so happy to hear that Method was joining in the cause to raise awareness for Breast Cancer.

Method believes in design as a force for good. It’s why they make products that are safe for people and the planet. It’s also why they’re using this season’s limited edition Designed For Good hand washes to help promote breast cancer awareness, and donating $10,000 to breast cancer research. Several organizations have been nomicated to receive these research funds, you can vote for them here.

Pop on over to see which organizations have the chance to benefit from a $10,000 gift from Method, and cast your vote! Winners wil be announced on 10/29.

As for the soaps themselve? Well, naturally they are both beautiful. And as always they come in planet friendly bottles and are available in two delicate scents: Botanical Garden and Mimosa Sun. They’re the perfect way for you to add a little sunshine to your sink during these cooler months—and of course show your support!
