For Little Swimmers:: Best Ear Plugs Ever

Ahhh, summer is here and that means lots and lots of time in the water. Last summer, Wolfie learned to swim and it was really amazing. We started in June with an excited but bit trepidatious kiddo, and ended in August with a boy who was leaping into the water off my parent’s boat and doing cannon balls. It was AWESOME!

Alas, the one downside to all his non-stop swimming? A bad case of swimmer’s ear! This is an inflammation of the outer ear canal and it can be pretty uncomfortable. It’s easily treatable with drops from the doctor, but it’s better to try and avoid it all together! Enter, the Ear Band-It. Friends, this line is AWESOME. I will tell you that we received these as a sample from the lovely Skylar over at Ear Band-It, but this is not a paid endorsement in any way. We used them and loved them and I just wanted to share with you!

The Putty Buddies are super soft but durable silicone ear plugs, ideal for children prone to ear infections, with ear tubes or other reoccuring ear problems. It’s also great for simply keeping water out of kiddo’s ears when they are swimming. They are really comfy and come in lots of bright, fun colors with a cute carry case—you can choose from cool characters with names like Splash Puppy, Wipeout Wally and Surfin’ Sammy. CUTE right? The packaging really helps make it appealing to kiddos—Wolfie wasn’t sure about the idea of ear plugs at first, but was really into choosing which color and “buddy” we would use each day! There are even “floating” versions, so if they accidentally pop out you won’t have any problem finding them. Sweet! And at $5.95 for a 3-pack, it’s such a great deal.

To hold in your Putty Buddies, you can also add on the Ear Band-It Swimming Headband, which is a soft-but-sturdy neoprene headband that protects your ears by ensuring the earplugs stay firmly in your kiddo’s ears. If your child is prone to ear infections, this thing is the bomb! Additionally, it has a sporty cool look that kids love. If your kiddo has longer hair, there is the added bonus of it keeping their hair out of their eyes! Not that anyone around these parts ever has that problem, ahem.

Are your kids big swimmers? We are so looking forward to logging in lots of pool time this summer. Here’s to happy healthy ears all summer long!

And then we went to Disneyland.

A few months ago we went to Disneyland and OOOOH was it a blast. It can be a bit overwhelming traveling there with kids, so I have a big ol’ TWO PART-Part post going up Wednesday and Thursday with all my tips and tricks. Are you planning on hittin’ up the Magic Kingdom this summer or fall? Do you have any questions? Please feel free to post ’em in the comments and I’ll be sure to answer them in my post!

(We don’t look that happy but I swear it’s just we are squinting in the glare of the sun!)

(This is Wolfie’s, “Stop taking pictures mama and get in the tea cup!!” face.)

It’s a fact. Pretzels taste even better when they’re shaped like MICKEY.

Um so yeah….we had a great time! Whenever I go, my photos are always a bit all over the place….and that’s how it should be. You need to spend the day having a blast and taking it all in—not just snapping photos. We usually go for two days but this was a one day trip. Our boy was exhausted by the end of the day, but as you can see by the smiles, we loved every minute of it!

OK, so don’t forget to ask any questions you have! I’ll definitely answer them tomorrow and Thursday!

Chairman of the Board :: Pop-o-Matic!

I love old board games. I especially love the graphics. But I also really enjoy playing them! One of my favorites? The Pop-O-Matic! If you’ve ever played with one before, then you know that satisfying CLACK! POP! sound it makes. Ahhh. Perfection.

Just in case you’ve never played one, the Pop-O-Matic was a small plastic dome that housed the dice (or die) for your game. You pushed down on it, and it caused the base to flex and “pop”, shaking the dice and rolling them for you. So cool! It was awesome for a ton of reasons—you never had to worry about losing your dice, no one could cheat, and of course it was SUPER FUN to pop!

The most famous of the Pop-O-Matic games is Trouble. You can still buy the Trouble game today and I highly recommend it! You know how some games are great for kid’s but as parents they aren’t reeeally that exciting? Well this one is seriously fun for the whole family. Easy to play, fun to pop…and lots of family-friendly competition when you send your opponents pegs back to home base! There is a Star Wars version, but I’m not a fan (don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE fan of Star Wars….but when you pop the thingie, you hear a lound R2-D2 beep whirl sound effect and it ruins the classic pop-o-matic experience for me. Just sayin’….).

We liked Trouble so much that when I found this little guy at the thrifts a while back, I had to scoop it up. Headache is really similar to Trouble, but instead of booting your fellow player back to home base, when you land on the same spot, you get to stack your piece on top of theirs and it becomes yours. AWESOME!

Dottie and I also reminisced awhile back about putting the little red cones on our fingertips and pretending they were long, glamorous finger nails! Oooh lala!

While I remembered playing Trouble and Headache when I was little, I had never seen this gem before. No Loose Parts = AWESOME!! And I’m thinking this will be perfect for playing on my folk’s pontoon boat this summer. Even the bingo cards are tactile and fun (you “punch” the numbers down when you get one!).

You know I always like to give you guys a lil history on these vintage things I love, but I have to confess I honestly don’t know much about the actual Pop-O-Matic! I do know that initially it came with board games from the Kohner Brothers, and eventually Milton Bradley….who are now part of Hasbro. Finding BINGO made me realize that that there was a whole world of other Pop-O-Matic games out there. I poked around an just look at these groovy games! I think some of them might have cooler graphics than game play—do you really need dice for checkers? Hmmm.

I have to warn you, I saw inside this Cross Over the Bridge game and it doesn’t look nearly as fun as that super awesome box artwork!

This Robo Force game looks totally confusing  but I so love the idea of a GIANT SUPER Pop-O-Matic!!

But I can’t lie….DOUBLE TROUBLE looks RAD!!!!!

OK, let’s finish this round off with a BONUS VIDEO! The old Trouble commerical. Just wait til you heat the POP! CLACK!

Do you remember playing with the Pop-O-Matic?? Wasn’t it awesome! You can get a new Trouble game here or you can grab a vintage Pop-O-Matic game from Etsy over here!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Cool Stuff to Browse

Helllllo! Another busy week around these here parts. Wolfie is in the midst of Summer Camp Mania and having a blast! How about you guys? Are your kiddo’s hanging around at home with you are having summer time adventures? We are also gearing up for our summer vacation trips to Michigan and Myrtle Beach, which we are looking forward to! OK, on with the linkies.

I have another awesome collection here, but really the video at the end is the star of today’s show. Apologies in advance for getting that damn song stuck in your head. Carry on….

1. DEER PERSON WHO MADE THIS. YOU ROCK.

This illuminated deerhead is super awesome. I have no idea who made it, the credit just says “Scandanvian.” But I love it. It’s from the Hollywood Hills home of Jim Turner, the guy who co-founded Flaunt & Detour magazines. Apparently business was good, because his place is kind of amazing.  See the whole pad here.

2. HAPPY, HAPPY JOY JOY.

We love Winter Water Factory (you might remember our profile on them a while pack!) and we think Joy is extremely clever…so when we found out that the two had collaborated, we were all “Oh, well DUH!” Check out this fun bebe collection here.

3.  DIAMONDS ARE FOR PICNICS.

This tutorial from Design Love Fest is really smart and TOTALLY cool. Bri and her pal used a plastic lined drop cloth, taped it up and painted. Check it out. I think I want to make one too!

4. RED, RED WINE-SICLES.

OMG. These Red Wine and Chocolate popsicles from Emma over at A Beautiful Mess look TASTE-TEE as can be! I love a little grown up yum pop action! Find the recipe here.

5. BOTTLED CUTENESS.

Seriously? How clever and beautiful. And pretty easy to make too. Our homegirl Jordan knows what’s  up, when it comes to crafts. See how over at Oh Happy Day.

6. I FOUND THE FUTURE.

This prototype of a skyscraper in Seoul is EXACTLY how I always imagined the future. Nice to see the architects of the world are finally catching up to my space age visions! See more here.

7. JOE HOUSE IS COOLER THAN MY HOUSE.

Joe Boxer is selling his house. And it’s pretty damn fabulous. As my friend Don said, All you need is 6 million dollars. Or 400,000 pair of boxers. See more here.

8. MOVING LOOK BOOK.

I’m really loving this GIF trend right now. I’m sure I’ll tire of it eventually, but its really fun to see the clever ways people are using them. I love playing around with them too. This animated Look Book from CLOSED is super fun. It feels very Harry Potter-ish to me! See it all here.

9. PRETTY PAPER

I love Papier Maiche magazine. I hadn’t gotten around to checking out the latest issue yet finally did and it’s very pretty. I esp love this clever photo shoot! Take a look here. (via Erin at Design For Mankind)

10. BONUS VIDEO. LADY BUMP.
Um…..so remember that Aerobics World Championship video I posted and y’all went crazy for? This almost beats it. I don’t even know what to say. The dancers. The hair. The MOUTH. And of course, the Scream. WOW. ENJOY.

Oh yeah….you know you love it! Hey, did any of you see Brave yet? What didja think??

Pixar Rocks {and so does BRAVE}

It’s nice to have friends in high places. Or rather, creative places! I have two friends who work at Pixar and thanks to them I have been super SUPER lucky to see lots of sneak peek preview movies right at Pixar. Now that Wolfie is a part of our lives, my sweet friend Stephanie has gotten him into several Pixar previews and it’s SO MUCH FUN!

The first movie he saw there was Ratatouille. Hee. Look how little he was! {As an aside, he wan’t that into Ratatouille. Greg and I loved it, but it’s not very “little kid” friendly, compared to some of the other films!}

And last year we saw Cars 2! Wolfie loved the first Cars SO MUCH….it was his very, very first-ever “in the theater” movie, so it will always be a special on for our family!

But this year it was BRAVE! Wolfie was SO excited to see it, since he knew she had a bow and arrow…

The Pixar campus is really cool. Inside the main lobby (which is HUGE) are all these wonderful reminders of past films. A giant Lego Woody & Buzz. A huge Luigi from Cars. Lots of Academy Awards. The bathrooms have “Woody” and “Bo Peep” on them, which always makes me smile…and there is a big game room.

When we got inside the theater, we were SO excited! As the lights dim, the ceiling transforms into a starry sky….with twinkling constellations above. There are two shooting stars that go by and it’s tradition that when they do the whole theater goes, “Oooooh!” “Ahhhh!” Wolfie remembered and did it along with everyone and I thought, “Wow, what a lucky little boy to experience so many cool things in his little life.”

But on to the movie!

MINI REVIEW OF BRAVE!

For starters, the setting is the lush country side of Scotland—and it as usual the animation is STUNNING!! Merida, the lead, is a feisty fabulous princess with a wild and glorious mane of hair. She is not your typical princess at all, in that she wields a bow and arrow better than any fella and rides a giant black horse named Angus (who has huge fluffy white “hooves” that reminded us of Sammy’s paws…). The beginning of the story is how her mother (played by the fabulous Emma Thompson) is preparing her to take over the crown and become Queen someday. Merida’s parents have arranged for a huge competition, the winner of which will win her hand in marriage. Merida isn’t too thrilled with this and has other plans. The movie then takes a completely unexpected turn….and the roller coaster takes off! I won’t divulge what happens, but it’s almost like an entirely new movie begins. I was very transfixed by the lush visuals….we didn’t see it in 3D but I imagine it would be pretty gorgeous. And I loved Merida’s mother. They are two really fabulous female character. I won’t say it’s my favorite Pixar movie (my tops are Wall-E, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles…and the first CARS!) but it’s really splendid. Wolfie loved the film a lot and despite technically having a “princess” as the heroine, I think it’s totally appealing to both boys and girls! OH and there is a totally charming short that starts things off, called La Luna. It’s wonderful.

Some Notes for Parents: I think this transforms into a pretty dark movie and could be potentially scary for those 6 and under. It all depends on how your kiddo handles darker themes and wild action. Wolfie has always been a rather sensitive little guy and I think his 4-6 year old self would really have been affected by some of the darker moments and scarier characters. It’s not a scary movie, per se, but lets just say his 8 year old self jumped out of his seat (literally!) at one moment. He told me he was more startled than scared. Also, there are a lot of potentially emotional moments that occur between Merida and her Mother (I will say that no one dies, but I’d rather caution you to check it out and ask other friends who have seen it than have you take your 3-4 year old and say “Wellll, we had to leave midway because she/he was a little upset.”)

One of the cutest parts about seeing a movie at Pixar is that at the end EVERYONE stays for the entire credits. I love that! We spotted our friend’s name and discussed how her new little baby Rufus didn’t quite make the cut off for the “Pixar Babies” listing (all of their movies list every kiddo born during the production. So cool huh!). After the movie we went back outside and took more photos and checked out the little Celtic Stone Circle that was on the grounds (as a nod to the movie). It was a pretty fabulous night! Are you planning on seeing Brave? Let me know what you (and your kiddos) think!
