Vintage Bookshelf :: Hello Joe!

This little gem was a thrift store score a few years ago. And oh Joe, how i love ya, how I love ya! This book always makes me smile. I think the typeface of the title is really great too…

Of course Joe the Crow is sassy, but there’s something about the little squirrel in his little German hat and vest that is just so hilarious—nevermind that his name is “Nutty Sam.”

Both Joe and Nutty Sam talk in jazzy rhymes that are pretty awesome…..

Hurray! I can’t get enough of that crazy little squirrel…

Kiddo Bookshelf :: French Horns are Groovy

It’s time for another edition of the vintage book shelf! Whoo hoo! This one I found at a terrific estate sale, where I also walked away with an awesome Fisher Price record player for Wolfie! These illustrations are so charming—I think you’ll fall in love with them!

OLLIE!!!!! I love his little outfit and how spindley the legs on the his music stand are.

I didn’t include every single page (I figured there were only so many images of Ollie and his big bad horn that you needed to see!) but how cute, huh! Vintage children’s books make me so deliriously happy…..I don’t think I can ever have enough of them!

Kiddo Bookshelf :: The Big Book of 60s Fairytales

Well hello! It’s time for another visit to the Vintage Bookshelf. Today’s is especially appropriate because Dottie and I are Guest Curator’s over on ETSY today! I have to tell ya it was so much fun. We used vintage kid’s books as our inspiration and the collections are really playful, if I do say so myself! Oh and HELLLLLO Etsy peeps, if you found us via our post! We’re so glad to have you stop by!

OK, back to our featured illustrator. I’ve already showed you one of my favorite Art Seiden books (The Romper Room Book of Manners, doncha know) and this one is equally as fabulous—but the characters are a little less “young” in style. Less rounded. A little more classic storybook. Which is very appropriate, seeing as this is a book of fairytales! Take a look:

All aboard the S.S. Fairyland! Incredibly cute….

I’ve always been amused by Puss in Boots (long before Shrek, of course) and this little guy doesn’t disappoint.

The story is integrated into the image, which makes for a lovely experience.

Talk about dainty footies!

So there you have it! Don’t forget to stop by Etsy today to check out the Modern Kiddo Guest Curator column….I have one more post for today, so I’ll see ya’ll this afternoon!

Vintage Kiddo Bookshelf: The Thinking Book.

It’s time for one of my favorite features here, friends. The vintage book shelf! For those of you who are new to the Kiddo, I’ll tell you that I’m in love with vintage children’s books and have quite a dandy collection. My faves are those that have  a real mid-century vibe to them. Like this hip family, for example. I love the mom and the little boy….and the fact that they have a dog, a slinkster cat AND a bunny.

They remind of a hipper version of Dick & Jane. This fun book is part of an Encyclopedia Britannica series of school books that have names like Learning About Shapes and The Magic of Everyday Things. This one is called The Thinking Book and its pretty darn cute. Wolfie likes reading it, but I have to admit I mostly love to look at the pictures.

I’m loving how cute and proper people in this book are. “Children, let’s all gather at the window to observe the squirrel and robin as they co-exist in harmony.” There is some a tad tragic about the canary and weird fish staring longingly out the window too.

The last images, with black and white line work, are among my favorites!

Taken from my copy of The Thinking Book by Adelaide Hall, pictures by Dagmar Wilson, 1963.

I love this book so much. I’ll be back next week with another awesome  book from my library. If you can’t wait, then be sure to browse the Flickr group The Retro Kid for a fabulous collection of vintage books!

OH and today is the last day to vote for Modern Kiddo for the ohdeedoh/apartment therapy Homie awards! Won’t you please give us a vote? Thank you!! Click to vote.
