Friday Link Hootenanny :: Fun Stuff to Browse

1. SOUPER CHIC.

I’m no food blogger, but I thought this post on how to style and shoot food and recipe images was really fascinating. Read it here!

2. SUPER 60s SUPER MODEL.

Colleen Corby was one of the biggest models in the day…you maybe not remember her name but you sure knew her face. She was wholesome and All-American but still had a little vavoom poutiness that made her super popular. There is a whole Flickr group with awesome 60s/70s pics from magazines like Seventeen. See more here.

3. PENCIL IN AN AWESOME SUMMER

These pencils would make everything fun to write up! I’ll take drive-in movies while I suspect Greg would like afternoon naps. Ahem. From esty seller one fine dae.

4. STEP RIGHT UP FOLKS!

Wow. I’m so into these color photographs of circus performers from the 1940s and 50s. They’re amazing! If you love them as much as I do you can even buy  The Circus Book: 1870-1950 yourself!

5. A MOVING WEDDING INVITATION.

Jessica Hische is an amazing illustrator, designer, and typographer. She has created many brilliant book covers and logos and fonts and prints….and most recently she created the gorgeous film titles & credits for Wes Anderson’s film, Moonrise Kingdom. Yeah. She’s legit! So it should come as no surprise that her wedding invitation is totally cool. It’s an animated storybook. SO sweet.  See it here. (Thanks to Dottie for showing this to me!)

6. IN-FLIGHT AWESOME SELF PORTRAITS

HAH! How funny are these?? Nina Katchadourian takes photos of herself in the lavatory mirror when she’s on a flight— using toilet paper and seat covers as costumes. She modeled the images after 15th-century Flemish portraiture. Brilliantly weird. (via Design Mom)

7. SILENTLY SIX FLAGS.

These Holga images shot by photgrapher mark mouton of an abandoned Six Flag’s Amusement park are totally haunting. See them all here.

8. BLUEBERRY DELICIOUSNESS

Oooooh this blueberry treat from my friend Tracey looks SO yummy and so summery. I can’t wait to make it!!

9. OLYMPIC-SIZED EXCITEMENT.

I am soooooooo excited for the Summer Games next month, are you? I am always totally into the ladies gymnastics, the swimming, the diving….but this year I’m completely transfixed by the men’s gymnastics team. Did you happen to catch the Olympic Trials? We caught it by chance and it was AWESOME. The two top men’s contenders—Danell Leyva and John Orozco —both have such cool stories. John Orozco is utterly amazing to watch and has a fascinating back story, coming from a really rough neighborhood in the Bronx. His mom was always in the stands, covering her eyes nervously. Really sweet. His team mate and friend/rival is Danell Leyva (above), a Cuban immigrant who is coached by his step dad and mom. Besides being easy on the eye, Danell is crazy talented. He came in first place at the trials. His coach/dad is HIGH-larious, known for his super animated sideline antics. Check out this short video of Danell on the high bar (and be sure to watch his coach at the end!). GO TEAM USA!

10. BONUS VIDEO #1
OMG this is the the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Who knew a lady ventriloquist could be so awesome??

10. BONUS VIDEO #2
In honor of the 4th of July, one last but of silly video fun video. Candy fireworks!

HAVE AN AWESOME WEEKEND!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Cool Stuff to Browse

Helllllo! Another busy week around these here parts. Wolfie is in the midst of Summer Camp Mania and having a blast! How about you guys? Are your kiddo’s hanging around at home with you are having summer time adventures? We are also gearing up for our summer vacation trips to Michigan and Myrtle Beach, which we are looking forward to! OK, on with the linkies.

I have another awesome collection here, but really the video at the end is the star of today’s show. Apologies in advance for getting that damn song stuck in your head. Carry on….

1. DEER PERSON WHO MADE THIS. YOU ROCK.

This illuminated deerhead is super awesome. I have no idea who made it, the credit just says “Scandanvian.” But I love it. It’s from the Hollywood Hills home of Jim Turner, the guy who co-founded Flaunt & Detour magazines. Apparently business was good, because his place is kind of amazing.  See the whole pad here.

2. HAPPY, HAPPY JOY JOY.

We love Winter Water Factory (you might remember our profile on them a while pack!) and we think Joy is extremely clever…so when we found out that the two had collaborated, we were all “Oh, well DUH!” Check out this fun bebe collection here.

3.  DIAMONDS ARE FOR PICNICS.

This tutorial from Design Love Fest is really smart and TOTALLY cool. Bri and her pal used a plastic lined drop cloth, taped it up and painted. Check it out. I think I want to make one too!

4. RED, RED WINE-SICLES.

OMG. These Red Wine and Chocolate popsicles from Emma over at A Beautiful Mess look TASTE-TEE as can be! I love a little grown up yum pop action! Find the recipe here.

5. BOTTLED CUTENESS.

Seriously? How clever and beautiful. And pretty easy to make too. Our homegirl Jordan knows what’s  up, when it comes to crafts. See how over at Oh Happy Day.

6. I FOUND THE FUTURE.

This prototype of a skyscraper in Seoul is EXACTLY how I always imagined the future. Nice to see the architects of the world are finally catching up to my space age visions! See more here.

7. JOE HOUSE IS COOLER THAN MY HOUSE.

Joe Boxer is selling his house. And it’s pretty damn fabulous. As my friend Don said, All you need is 6 million dollars. Or 400,000 pair of boxers. See more here.

8. MOVING LOOK BOOK.

I’m really loving this GIF trend right now. I’m sure I’ll tire of it eventually, but its really fun to see the clever ways people are using them. I love playing around with them too. This animated Look Book from CLOSED is super fun. It feels very Harry Potter-ish to me! See it all here.

9. PRETTY PAPER

I love Papier Maiche magazine. I hadn’t gotten around to checking out the latest issue yet finally did and it’s very pretty. I esp love this clever photo shoot! Take a look here. (via Erin at Design For Mankind)

10. BONUS VIDEO. LADY BUMP.
Um…..so remember that Aerobics World Championship video I posted and y’all went crazy for? This almost beats it. I don’t even know what to say. The dancers. The hair. The MOUTH. And of course, the Scream. WOW. ENJOY.

Oh yeah….you know you love it! Hey, did any of you see Brave yet? What didja think??

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Fun Stuff to Browse

Ooooh lalala! It’s the Friday Link Hootenanny….ON FRIDAY! Yes, it’s a miracle! Today is Wolfie’s last day of school so we are officially hittin’ SUMMER VACATION mode. Whooo hoo! Life already seems busy, we have a birthday party and a wedding to go to this weekend, but we’ll hopefully squeeze in some nice loungin’ and relaxin’ too. Until then, here are some cool things that caught my eye this week!

1. THIS COVER WILL HAVE YOU IN STITCHES.

Embroidered Book Covers? Yes please. Artist Jillian Tamaki is so super clever and these book covers she did for Penguin are BRILLLIANT. See them all here.

{via designlovefest}

2. UNEXPECTED GUESTS

I am loving the San Francisco home of mid century modern finds’ christine and carlos—and their kiddos. WOW. It’s all so clean and modern but homey. You can see more on sfgirlbybay.

3. NORTH POLE CRIB

A while back I posted about this magical place near Santa Cruz called Santa’s Village. It was this retro wonderland where it was Christmas 365 days a year! Sadly  it was torn down several years ago. So I was SUPER excited to see Rachel over at Smile and Wave posting photos of the Santa’s Village near her. Check out her post here.

4. ABANDONED VINTAGE CARS

I am loving these abndoned vintage cars on Palermo Viejo’s streets in Buenos Aires. Captured beautifully by Brazilian art director, Eduardo Fialho. We actually had a VW station wagon like the one below except it was blue….we even drove it from Michigan to California for our summer vacation!

5. NEON BOWLS ME OVER

Yeah. I’m still not done with the neon. And I think it looks smashing paired with this organic wood! See ’em here on Poppytalk.

6. WHY YOU GOTTA DIS THE COMIC?

If you don’t already know this….most people think using Comic Sans “font” is akin to holding up a flashing sign that says “I know nothing about design!” Well, Comic Sans has had enough of your bad mouthing and has written a rebuttal. This piece in McSweeney’s is the funniest thing EVER. I read it when it first came out a while back, but just saw it over at Gala Darling again this week and was reminded how HIGHlarious it is! Read it here.

7. TATTOO YOU.

Groovy brain child of Swiss Miss Tina Roth Eisenberg, Tatty is a collection of designy temporary tattoos created by some of the world’s hippest designers. For the month of  June, Tattly is offering 6-month tattoo subscriptions. And that’s just WAY cooler than the fruit of the month club.

{via design mom}

8. AFFORDABLE HERMES. YAY.

Last year, infamous designer brand Hermes released a printable version of the iconic Kelly bag. So cool! Well now they’ve done it again with these cool clutches. To download yours, simply visit this page, let it load, and then click on the “I want it, I’ll have it” thumbnail. You can choose from six different patterns. Fun! I wish I could track down the Kelly…it’s so cute too.

9. DADDY, OH!

{Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth and their sweet bebe!}

{Sammy Davis Jr. and his cute little man}

{Humphrey Bogart and his plaid wearin’ tot!}

I love these charming photos of famous dads and their offspring. See the whole collection over at the LIFE archives.

BONUS VIDEO

Ahhh the Weber grill. What dad doesn’t love to BBQ? In honor of Father’s Day this weekend, I found a super rad vintage commercial featuring Paul Picerni…Star of TV and Screen. (OK, fine, I have no idea who he really is…..) But watch this. It’s awesome. The ending is the best part. OK…I’m off to watch more Dexter. I’m on Season 4 (Trinity) and utterly obsessed!!! HAPPY FRIDAY!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Cool Things To Browse

ONE MORE WEEK TIL SCHOOL IS OUT!!!!!!! Whooo hoooo! Let the Summer Vacation Count Down begin! Are you guys out of school already? Actually I don’t know why I’m so excited, I still have to work! hah. BUT it does mean we are thiiiis much closer to family trips to Michigan and Myrtle Beach, and also my Birthday Tradition, Tiki Oasis. What are you guys up to this summer? Answer below, but before that….check out some fun “Friday” linkies! (I know…it’s Sunday. Better late than never!)

1. WOODEN YOU LIKE NEON?

Neon has been all the rage and I’m still really loving it. I think it works best when paired with a neutral (like greys and whites and even beige. Yes. I said beige!). But I really love it with WOOD. And of course Martha is all over this with a snazzy jewelry DIY. Oh Martha. See it here. (via someone….I can’t remember who. Oopsy!)

2. CRUMPLESTILTSKIN

Meet, the Crumpled City Map! This is such a clever idea—a city map that you can simply shoved into your bag without folding. When you need it again, it magically unfolds. Each fun “crumpled: maps features wonderful illustrations and are even rain proof. Plus you can open and close them in 2 seconds—less time it takes to open yer umbrella. I really want one. (via babyccino kids)

3. LETTER RIP

Adorable Kiddo reader Ashley (of The Stork and the Beanstalk) tipped me off to the magic of Paul Thurlby. His series of alphabet letters is SO cool and charming. I think they’d be amazing in a kiddo room or your living room. See them here.

4. STATELY SAMMIES

How delicious do these look? Designer Kelly Pratt has crafted a series of sandwiches based on different states. Her mission? Set out to make a special sandwich for each of the 50 states, using classic ingredients found locally. Join her on this delicious journey here.

5. KING OF YOUR OWN CASTLE

Do you have Game of Thrones Mania? If so, you can own this life size replica of THE throne for a mere $30,000 clams. Zoinks! Not the coziest looking thang, eh? As an aside, I am thiiiiiiis close to finishing the last book (lawdy is it taking me FOREVER!). It’s tough on a Kindle, because you can’t flip to the back to double check characters and I fully admit some chapters I think, “WHO is this person??” Anyway, I just finished Season 1 and loved it. Can we discuss how hot ol Peter Dinklage is? I love him as Tyrion.

6. HIP BABY BOOKS

Back in the day, Baby Books were very Hallmark “Special Moments” in their design. Not any more. Just look at these fancy Nancies. The Plibook Collection by PiqPoq are just the thing for the modern parent. Score them over at kickcan and conkers. (via handmade charlotte)

7. PRETTY PAPER

Aren’t these cool? See more paper pop-ups by snazzy Portland-based designer mengyu chen. (via whoreange)

8. BEEP BOOP BEEP.

These super clever Space Invaders playing cards are by Russian design company Art Lebedev Studio. Wolfie would totally dig them. You can buy them here.

9. BONUS VIDEO

Mr. Rogers was always a calming force in households of the 70s….with his soothing voice and wise words. I didn’t appreciate him in my laters years, preferring the spazzy good fun of Sesame Street. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized how AWESOME he was. My friend MizLandry showed me this excellent remix video. It’s fun, funky and full of cool Mr. Roger’s missives. I think you’ll like! (“But Mr. McFeeley….I didn’t order a flute!” hahaha) Enjoy that last bit of weekend friends! See ya here tomorrow….

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Cool Things to See

Hello friends! We’ve had some pretty glorious weather lately and we are hoping the sunny days continue! Do you guys have big plans this weekend? We’re just relaxing a bit. A birthday party. A little league game. And hopefully a  lil movie watchin’! I hope you guys Have a wonderful weekend! Until then, here are some things to tide you over…

1. MOONRISE KINGDOM

Are you as excited for the new Wes Anderson movie as I am? Moonrise Kingdom looks awesome. In a genius marketing ploy the movie’s music supervisor made a mixtape of all the characters’ favourite songs. I love this idea! Check it out here.

2. CHALK IT UP TO FUN

Back in the day, my roomie Mirka and I were obsessed with Manic Panic hair dye. (For YEARS my hair always had chunky stripes of bright red or purple—Manic Panic Pilar Box Red or Fire or Plum) I was just thinking the other day how fun it would be to play with color again but I wasn’t sure I wanted something permanent. And then I read about “chalking” and was totally intrigued. Girls are using pastel on their hair to temporarily color their hair. Have you tried it??

The goils over at The Beauty Department did a cool tutorial here. And Ciaran at momfluential also has a great tutorial over here.

3. MAKE A STATEMENT

I love big, bold colorful necklaces. This DIY over at Making it Lovely is so pretty.

4. PRETTY CHOCOLATE

Mmmmmm. Yum yum yummy AND gorgeous packaing. From Amelia Rope.

5. MUSIC TO MY EARS

Not only amd I loving these to new albums, I really love the cover artwork too. Listen to Best Coast here.

Listen to The Walkmen here.

6.  ELLE-OH, STYLISH ONE.

I had no idea that there was an Elle Decor South Africa. Thankfully Victoria did. She posted two really amazing spreads, one with neon and the other just plain gorgeous.

7. KANYE IS A TWEETIE PIE

Needlepointer Amy Sheridan came up with this funny idea of embroidering Kanye’s tweets. Ans they are SO hilarious. Oh Kanye….I’ve actually met him twice (we had ice coffee at the Chateau Marmont, I felt like such a baller!). I was doing a project with him for work and believe it or not he was totally respectful, on time, funny and cool. He was cocky but he sort of made fun of himself too. I will say this was right before his mama passed, and I really think a lot of his craziness stems from that. He was on tour and continued even though he was devastated (and alas, our project was put on hold…). ANYWAY, I’m always amused (or bemused?) by his antics. And his tweets are ridiculous.

I think she’s really backordered, but you can contact her at her Etsy shop here.

8. NOT SO TINY BUBBLES.

These are gorgeous. Bubblegum is a whimsical and colourful installation by Merijn Hos and Renée Reijnders, located in the Netherlands. The piece features 50 balloons that “shine, float and bubble” across water. Kind of magical huh! Found via Plenty of Colour.

9. TASTY CHAPTER.

This cleve book is not only pretty, it’s practical. When you are done reading the recipes, you can bake them into a lasagna! Woot! See more here.

10. BONUS VIDEO: THE L-Y SONG

This is one of my favorites—i believe it ran on the Electric Company. The animation is a little on the simple side, but the song is so clever and fun. It’s now one of Wolfie’s faves toO! Tom Lehrer was a brilliant songwriter.

Oh yeah, there are a few more new, fun goodies in the Wolfie’s Closet shop. Head on over to check ’em out!
