MAEVE: Raising an Inspired Generation

A while back we featured the gorgeous photography of Australian dynamo Kate Vale (of Tea & Jam fame). In addition to running an amazing photo business, Kate recently launched MAEVE magazine and lemme tell you it is BEEYOOTIFUL!!!! Wowza!

The photography, lay out and design is really fantastic….and guess what? Dottie and I are featured inside! When Kate asked me to participate I wasn’t quite sure what to write about, but then I thought, “What about a story about how two girl friends meet??” And so, “Me and My Bestie” was born! I think the article turned out really well. Please swing by and take a look—in addition to all the swell content, you’ll get to hear about how Dottie and I ended up starting Modern Kiddo!

Thank you so much Kate! We’re honored to be a part of your inaugural issue!

Change of Seasons. Change of Wardrobe.

This weekend, I plan to officially move the Peach’s winter outfits out her dresser and closet and into storage. I’m sure everyone Back East is already packing up their winter clothes to make room for the pretty pastels and short pants of summer. But before we pack up all of our winter wear, I’d love to hear what clothes got you through the winter with your little one.

For me, it was a gift from my friend Dana of five little fleece jumpers in fun solid colors that the Peach wore pretty much every day.

Best thing about  these little jumpers—they  cost 99 cents each from the local 99 cent store.

I also bought two fleece jumpers from the Gap on sale for $5.00 each. Paired with leggings and a long sleeved onesie, well, that was the Peach this winter.

So much for super fancy, but I think the Peach rocks them anyway! Now I’m ready for her to show off her Target Liberty of London haul in a big way this summer.

What got you through your winter? What was your kiddo clothing savior? An extra jolly pair of boots?  The  snuggliest legwarmers you hand knit yourself? That great pink gear furry snowsuit from L.L. Bean?

And what are you excited about dressing your little ones in now that it is warmer weather? We’d love to share your clothing cleverness with everyone!

MODERN KIDDO TIP: Cuteness can be found anywhere, you just have to keep your eyes peeled! Who would have imagined the 99 cent store would yield such awesomeness?

Hot Links from the Kiddos.

To send you off on your merry way this weekend, we have some fun links to things that have caught our eye this week. Of course we’ve got a lil Easter Theme going. Enjoy!

Elsie Marley has a tutorial for the most super simple Make Your Own Easter Bunny softie. It’s so cute and cuddly—and the best part is that it’s made out of wee baby socks. Adorable!!

If you want bunnies with more of a face, then check out this sweet tutorial. (via inhabitots)

These moustache and button apple lollipops would be adorable in an easter basket. You can learn how to make them from the lovely Elsie over at A Beautiful Mess.

Did you happen to see the INSANE egg tutorial that Megan over at Not Martha came up with? These eggs are so OUT OF CONTROL—very cool but wowzer (she took real eggshells, carefully emptied them, sterilized them, dyed them a gorgeous robin’s egg blue, double lined with with TWO kinds of chocolate, then she handcrafted wee paper daffodils to stuff inside them along with little candies…shoot I’m exhausted just TYPING that!!). You have to check out this detailed tutorial. Of course, because she is so extremely awesome, she came up with a simpler version too. Wow.

Then there is this totally charming post from Chez Larsson:

The most adorable little egg shell boat with a sailor chickadee. Honestly, these crafty ladies are amazing! The post is fabulous with even more cute egg crafts. (via the adorable Sassy Smolak!)

An finally, the awesome peeps over at Oh Dee Doh posted this hilarious list of “Ten Products We Wish Were April Fools Jokes”. The PeePee Bottle? Seriously? (thanks to my sweet pal Dorinda for that hot tip!) Have an excellent weekend friends! We’ll see you on monday for the Vintage Round Up!

Pink Bunny on Bike from the incredible Zoe Austin.

Hot Dog! It's Fresh Link Friday.

Hello fabulous readers….it’s FRIDAY!! So we have a leetle snag in this week’s Weekly Kiddo. Thanks to a klutzy cat and a pesky glass of water I am now the proud owner of a super soggy laptop that won’t start. Argh! It’s currenly drying out and I’m crossing my fingers and toes that the thing restarts eventually and I haven’t lost everything (all my writing, my inspiration files, the 1000s of photos of Wolfie. Ahhhhh! I don’t even want to think about it….). While I can’t access my Weekly Kiddo pictures, it’s the perfect time to launch a new series we’re starting here—our favorite links of the week. This is a little selection of things we’ve stumbled upon over the week that we’re digging. And we hope you dig ’em too!

1. Amazing children’s photographer Ashely Ann takes gorgeous pictures, but she is also just an all around brilliant creative gal. I was DYING over this vintage glasses onesie she crafted up for her little girlie:

It’s soooo hipster librarian! Find the DIY tutorial on Ashley Ann’s site.

2. You’ll fah-lip when you see these little Hand Knit baby costumes….I can’t even imagine how tricky it would be to make one of these things! The crazy geniuses at The Miniature Knit Shop have a whole slew of ’em. “Fitted for tiny varmints up to 9 month.” Hee.

3. I love bad TV. It’s true. And if it’s on Bravo, so much the better. So it should come as no surprise that I’m totally into the new show 9 by Design. Stylish couple Bob and Cortney Novogratz of Sixx Design (who have SEVEN kids, people, including TWO sets of twins. Oy!) are getting their own show. Infinitely more awesome than the Duggarts.

4. I’ve always loved the whimsical Eames Hang It All coat rack. You know the one, with the big colorful round knobs. So cool—but kind of pricey. Leave it to my genius pal Danielle, of Kitschy Digital‘s fame, to come up with a DIY version. You can find the tutorial on her sweet blog, Thompson Family. (And oooh it looks like someone scored the Liberty of London wellies and that sweet chair!)

5. And with the Easter bunny hip hopping its way towards us at an alarming rate, we turn our heads toward the grand dame of craftiness, St. Martha for adorable kid friendly Easter crafts such as making your own bunny ears.

6. We are also totally smitten with these little bunny finger puppets from The Purl Bee. One clever commenter suggested using them as lollipop covers, which sounds totally sweet too!

7. So you say you ran out of thin mints and can’t find a girl scout anywhere?? CHOW to the rescue with a great feature called Make Your Own Girl Scout Cookies!  But beware, these little suckers  are even more addictive than the ones in the purple, green and red boxes…

8. I’m kind of into how graphic and bad ass this poster is. Unlike the usual sweet imagery you usually find in children’s rooms, this graphic poster is inspired by the 60’s revolution era—and is still totally appropriate. From Swedish groovies, Our Children’s Gorilla.

9. OK, now this is something super duper rad. Imagine if you could make a stuffed animal out of one of your child’s drawings?? Well guess what. Now you can. There are two cool companies making these custom softies: Stuff Your Doodle (hee) and Shidonni. Talk about charming! You just have to promise to send us a picture if you get it done yourself.

10. Finally, I just have to share this iPhone app. I don’t know about you, but I’m always handing my iPhone over to Wolfie when he needs a little distraction. I can’t wait to show him this one. It’s called Smack Talk and while the concept is super simple, it’s pretty darn amusing. You speak into the microphone and a cute lil animal repeats back what you just said. It should be obnoxious, but somehow it’s just awesome. Have a look at the video below to see it in action! It’s a mere $1.19.

That’s it for this week people. We’ll be back on Monday with the Retro Roundup (our Vintage Kiddo shopping feature) and I promise next Friday we’ll have Weekly Kiddo AND Fresh Links. Don’t forget to enter our awesome Black Apple Alphabet Print Giveaway!!

Rock on and have a happy weekend!

Sugarcoat It Studios–Modern Cakes

I must admit that on the eve of the Peach’s first birthday, I am rather wracked with guilt.

I’m not throwing her a birthday party.

Partly because I just can’t deal with throwing a party. Some people are effortless party throwers.  Other people start to hyperventilate the moment the invites go out and have several nervous breakdowns until the event just thinking about gift bags, entertainment for kids from age 13 to 3 months and how will they be able to blow up 250 balloons in 15 minutes and vacuum the cat and UGGGGHHHH!

Excuse me while I find a paper bag to breath into…

When the Peach is the lofty age of 12 or so and starts asking about her first birthday, I am fully prepared to lie and tell her we had a big blowout involving dancing bears, handmade glitter play dough and Lady Gaga.  I’m sure a couple of hours on Photoshop could produce some sweet fake photos of this event as “proof”. You’ll stand behind me, right? Right?

But the one thing she will have is a proper cake.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good cupcake.  The indulgent frosting. It’s demitasse serving size.  The snuggy comforting taste of it.  It is like holding a bit of one’s childhood in the palm of your hand.

But sometimes you need to break out the big guns and get a cake.

A cake that says: “IT’S MAH BABY’S BIRTHDAY, GOSH DARN IT AND I LOVE HER/HIM SOMETHING FIERCE, PEOPLE!”

And if you need that kind of cake, then let me introduce you to Krista Markell and Sugarcoat it Studios.

Krista has my heart. You see, she did the extraordinary. She ditched her full-time fancypants corporate gig to follow her passion. And her passion was cakes. I gotta admit with cakes as gorgeous as this, well,…I’m happy she quit her job.

You see what I mean?

These cakes are bananas. Actually, I’m sure Krista could make a banana cake if you asked! She made me coconut! Mmmm coconut.  She’d even put harajuku girls on it I asked for it, like Kate and Callie did. Yup, Krista is that cool.

Lucky Kent to have a cake this awesome!

This cake KILLS me it is so stunning. And matching invitation from Stolen Plate Press. Krista and Etienne work together often to create matching invites and cakes. I bow to their awesomeness.

This one takes the cake! (Hahaha!!! Who says puns are out of fashion?)

Thank you, Krista!
