Introducing :: The Little Book Report Club!

As you know, we love books over here at Modern Kiddo. We write about them a lot—both vintage and new. Both Alix and I believe that reading to children is one of the most fundamentally awesome things you can do. Often in our quest for immortal retro goodness, we also come across Young Adult books we loved back in the day.

For example, over the summer I came across a sweet vintage copy of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, by the one and only Judy Blume.  I remember exactly where I was when I read it and how I talked to my friends about the book and how I totally related to it. Basically, I LOVED THAT BOOK.

But I haven’t picked it up since I returned it to the library in 1984.

I wondered…. would I love that book as much now as I did then?

Back at MK headquarters, I chatted about this with Alix and we both giggled as we remembered that book. All of a sudden we started spouting off all these other grand books we adored as tweens and teenage years but hadn’t picked up in ages. Like Island of the Blue Dolphins and Little House on the Prairie. And how about The Phantom Tollbooth? Or all the Nancy Drew mysteries??

Suddenly we were both hit by the idea—let’s chat about it! All together! Let’s call it a book club. In fact, we’ll call it the Modern Kiddo Little Book Report Club!  We’ll pick a book from our childhood that we haven’t read in ages, assign it at the beginning of the month and then we can all talk about it on the blog. And maybe,  just maybe… we’ll even do a fun little podcast chatting about it.

Our first book will be the one that started it all: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, by Judy-freaking-Blume.  Will we be bowled over by Judy’s awesome writing style? Will we be freaked out over memories from that time in our life? (“We must! We must! We must increase our bust!”) We will be discussing it all and more on the first Thursday in November!

So get ready. Download it to your Kindle, head to the local library, or grab a copy from the bookshelf in your old room at your parent’s house. Just find it and let’s all get reading!

Are you ready?  Who’s with us?? And start thinking about some of your other faves…we’ll be taking suggestions!

PS Vintage fever has taken the world by storm! Our girl Pilgrim tipped us to the Retro Readers Book Club, hosted by the adorable Pip at Meet Me at Mikes. They’re reading James and the Giant Peach, so you can get a double dose of your old favorites!

Lishyloo Baby Shower Blog Hop! Day 4

Oh darling Lishyloo!

We are back for more Lishyloo love today as part of the Lishyloo Blog Shower Skipperoo dreamed up by Sandi at Ada Lou Vintage. Who doesn’t love a good party?

Oh, darling Lishyloo–what fun you’ll have doing a nursery for a GIRL! Oh hurrah hurrah!  You’ve kept my kiddo in vintage goodies for her first three years and I expect more to come over the next handful of years.  We are so excited about your little one!

As my part of the Shower, I’m going to highlight some wonderful girly nurseries that all have a vintage flair that can’t help buy make you smile. I expect lil’ Miss Tova’s nursery will be a sublime mix of all things awesome with a healthy dash of vintage throughout.  I can only imagine the vintage adorableness in Tova’s closet. But I’d like to offer some great examples of ways to add a special vintage touch throughout the nursery from some of my favorite girly girl rooms. Most of these I plucked from Ohdeedoh, which as I’m sure everyone here knows has THE best collection of kiddo rooms for inspiration.

Sebastian and Ruby’s room (Mama: Rachel from Smile & Wave)

Hoo boy, I’m gaga for this room.  What Rachel did with those vintage blackboards is nothing short of genius. They are beautiful on their own and I’m sure get a full drawing workout on a daily basis.  And I love the little vintage kitchen Rachel found for Ruby.  I love it that it’s not perfect and that Rachel uses a couple of more grown up items that are kiddo sized, like the little espresso pitcher.

Poesy’s room (Mama: Katie)

Whenever I think of vintage kiddo, I think of Irmi! And Poesy’s mama found some amazing Irmi in this mobile and light plate.  But what always sets my heart aflutter in this room is the use of handkerchiefs.  That banner and even on the night stand. So pretty!  And one of my favorite things about this room is the sewing/knitting dresser which Katie re-purposed as a hold all for sorts of baby knick-nacks. So clever, Katie!

The Peach’s room (Mama: me!)

For the Peach’s nursery, I incorporated my love of vintage all over the place.  But I used a lot of vintage linens in unexpected places like an old tablecloth for curtains and another old tablecloth for pillows. I even used an old vintage Raggedy Ann sheet for a wall piece.  Also, there is so much darn STUFF with babies that I had to create more storage–with the help of these vintage suitcases.

Little Miss & Lark’s room (Mama: Hart & Sew)

Fellow vintage kiddo clothing seller, Hart & Sew did a beautiful job incorporating vintage througout her little girlie’s room.  I love the idea of hanging favorite vintage dresses on the wall.  And those darling vintage book ends are beautiful and useful. And I love the vintage crewel on the wall too!

Emma’s Nursery (Mama: Cinti from My Poppet)

I love this nursery not only for its just overall wonderfulness, but cleverness! Like using vintage bed sheets to make make a small one for the crib. (Prudent Baby has a great tutorial on how to do it. It’s easy peasy! Or using thrift store baskets to put all those little pieces of toys away. And using the vintage cradle for stuffed animal storage is another great idea. And let’s not forget that gorgeous handmade rug of vintage sweaters.  Too amazing for words!

So, there you go! I hope you found some great ideas for incorporating vintage into your little Tova’s room. Hurrah!

Blog Hop Day 2 :: Lishy Loo’s Baby Shower Power Hour

Well hello friends! Today is a special day! We don’t usually post on the weekends, but I am so thrilled to be a part of a unique online baby shower blog hop! How fun is that?? It’s for me dear pal Alisha—mama to Truman and Harrison, vintage kiddo clothing seller extraordinaire, and all around awesome chica. Oh, and she’s expecting a little baby girl this time around! Whoo hoo! In a bold and totally awesome move, they revealed the name early on. We can’t wait to welcome Little Miss Tova to the world.

So the way the Baby Shower Blog Hop works, every day this week a different blog will be hosting a special day for Lishy. I hope you are ready to join the party! Make sure to join us for Day 3 with Jenny, over on Frecklewonder.

Back in 2001, and before either of us had a blog, Lishy and I were both members of the This is Blythe doll forum. The new releases of the dolls had JUST come out and as geeky as it sounds, we were all so excited! Lishy and I totally hit it off (after discovering our shared love of bad TV and cheesy pop culture) and we’ve been friends ever since.

So for my blog hop celebration, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of our favorite, wacky and weird dolls.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, toy manufacturers were CLEARLY smoking the wacky tobacky as they sat around and drummed up new toy ideas. Most really make no sense, yet I still find them all beautifully bizarre. Let’s take a look at a handful of my—and Lishy’s— faves!

FLATSY

In 1969, Ideal introduced Flatsy. And yup, like the name says she is a mega flat doll. Flatsieswere made of rubber and had wire inserts that made them flexible, much like Gumby. The Teenage Fashion Flatsy doll was far creepier looking to me. They had the most awesome catch phrase: “She’s Flat and That’s That”. Kind of says it all.

EMERALD THE ENCHANTING WITCH.

This is officially the kookiest doll around. With lavender skin and luscious green locks, Emerald was a quirky, sprightly imp. The thing that made her so cool was that she had a little switch in the back that made her eyes glow. She was made in 1972 by Milton Bradley. She’s kind of like a combination of My Little Pony and those crazy Troll dolls. But way cuter.

SUSIE SAD EYES

In 1972, riding coattails of  Margaret Keane’s popular wide-eyed moppets came Susie Sad Eyes.  I think the name sort of says it all. So small. So sad. *sniff* Makes me want to hear Peggy Lee’s, “Is That All There Is?” Lishy has a fabulous collection of Susie Sad Eyes that I’m sure she’ll enjoy sharing with Tova.

LITTLE MISS NO NAME
While Susie Sad Eyes was a whistful little thang, she clearly has *nothing* on this sad waif. She’s pretty amazing but also makes me a little sad. The colossal eyes and little crystalline tear drop are one thing…but the burlap sack and bare feet take her over the edge. I’m DYING to know what marketing genius thought this would be a “fun” doll for little girls.

Are you dying yet?? I mean, it isn’t enough that the poor thing is wearing a burlap sack, they gotta put her in a snowstorm box??? Oh Hasbro….

LIDDLE KIDDLES

Weeeeee! These tiny treasures stand an awesome 2 3/4″ to 4″ tall. There was even a super teensy version that was about an inch tall. Despite their diminutive stature, they still had rooted hair and moveable arms and legs. They were produced by Mattel from 1966-1971. My favorites are the Lucky Locket Kiddles (which were necklaces). They were also Kiddle Kologne and Kola Kiddles (who lived in a perfume and soda bottle respectively) and the green Kosmic Kiddles—flying around in their hip UFOs. But really, the Kiddle Lockets were where it was at.

PETEENA THE FASHION POODLE

I’ve saved the best for last. This kookoo doll is one of my all-time favorites. Created in 1966, the lovely Peteena came with her own polka dot bikini. Um. Yes. A poodle-kini. While she has a the head of a pup, her body is human….she is totally weird but with her long lashes and sweet smile, I find her oddly lovely. Call me crazy.
