Flying V is for Valentines!

{I posted this last year, but it’s still SO cute I wanted to share it one more time. And heck, we’re doing it again this year!}

In my eyes, Valentine’s Day was never better than when we were in elementary school. Nothing was more fun than racing home, clutching that paper bag “mail box” all crammed full of tiny colorful valentines—and blushing like crazy when you realized you got a card from that cutie who sat behind you.

Now as a parent, I’m in charge of coming up with cool Valentines for my own kiddo to pass out. While I looooove beautiful crafties, I have to be honest. I don’t really have time to make anything too elaborate. At the same time I think it’s fun to do something a little special. This idea from Zakka Life is my new favorite! Totally easy and totally awesome, these rad, rock-n-roll lollipops are SURE to be a hit in Wolfie’s second  grade class.

This brilliant print out fits over heart shaped lollipops! They print out three to a sheet. You cut ’em out, hole punch the middle and pop ’em on top of a sucker. Easy peasy! Here’s all you need to make ’em.

Supplies:
+ Heart Shaped Lollipops (or any flat lollipop)
+ White Card Stock (but white paper works just as well)
+ Scissors
+ Hole Punch
+ Double Stick Tape

Print out the template at Zakka Life right HERE.

Soooooo cool, huh! “Bweedle bweedle bwowowow!” [that’s me playing air guitar over this cool score!]

“Can we PLEASE stop taking photos now, mama??”

This isn’t really a valentine, but I am still loving this beautiful iphone app from cartolina. If you aren’t familiar with it, it lets you send pretty little messages (kinda like a text) to friends. LOVE! I still haven’t downloaded it. Have you?

And because you know we love our retro-a-gogo, check out these awesome vintage valentines (for you to print out!), courtesy of the fine folks at tip nut.

We end with my own little Australian Valentine, Miss Pilgrim! Pop on over to Draw! Pilgrim and get this amazing little Valentines fortune teller! (OK, I admit. We used to call them cootie catchers back in the day…)

Last year she did an amazing Valentine too and you can still download this oh-so-charming printable! If you have a special sweetie, swing by her shop and buy the print. It’s gorgeous!

SMOOCHES friends! Have a fabulous weekend! I’ll be back in a bit with one more fun downloadable that Wolfie and I are using this Valentines Day!

DIY Valentine’s Day Cards

I love Valentine’s Day!  I remember buying the pack of 20 cards with little animals asking my friends to be my Valentine in the most puntastic way! (Imagine a picture of a cute pear with the saying, “we make a great pear”.

But as an adult my heart really swoons over a handmade card.  As an R.A. in college I used to take out my watercolor paints and paint artful lines on a piece of watercolor paper and cut it into hearts to give to my students.

And right now, the blogosphere is a flurry of darling handmade valentines, so I thought I would share my favorites with you!

A LITTLE STAMP GOES A LONG WAY

That Elsie amazes me. Something so sweet and simple can give such a big kapow, like this darling stamp tutorial! J’adore!

XO WATERCOLOR WONDERS

I like to think of this as a smarter, more charming version of what I did in college. Of course the clever Courtney Khail is behind this genius tutorial

BITS OF PAINT MAKE BIG BEAUTY

DesignMom, the finder of all things awesome on the Internets hipped me to this lovely home-made Valentine from Mer Mag.  DesignMom actually has a slew of amazing home-made Valentine’s ideas that are certainly worth checking out!

ORIGAMI HEART CUTENESS

Just grab a piece of paper from the printer and you are a few folds away from this beauty. From the marvelous mind of Eat Drink Chic.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME, BUT DO HAVE A PRINTER.

I think it is totally OK to print some cuteness out–like these great cup holders. Swoon! ModgePodge Rocks has as sweet list of 20 different printable Valentine’s that won’t take more time than it takes to  hit the print button on your computer. Hurrah! Hey, you used your hands to push the print button, so kinda handmade, right?

AND JUST BECAUSE…

I couldn’t NOT include the old ones with random things made punny and sweet. Like these eggs. And yup. You can download this and other goodies here on Vintage Holiday Crafts.   Because you and I do make a great pear!

Alexandra and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Friends, have you ever had one of “those days”? Where nothing seems to go right? I had one of those days yesterday. Lemme tell ya, EVERYTHING was off. From big things (our car battery died and had to be completely replaced, greg had an emergency at work and was really late due to battery dramatics) to little things (I knocked my head on the car trunk, trying to find jumper cables) to  frustrating things (I came home to find that Sam doggy had pulled our little composting/food scraps bin down from the counter….leaving a mess…AND knocked down my vintage Starburst butter dish, shattering it, and eating half a stick of butter. Blergh.). Then there were a myriad of little things, like I walked into our bedroom and some how bumped into my dresser and sent all kinds of stuff crashing to the floor, shattering a vintage 1920s rhinestone/celluloid bracelet. Spilling my ice coffee. The capper was in the evening, when the dad of one of Wolfie’s friends dropped him off at home, but then proceeding to bitch at me for something that didn’t involve me at all (he needed to chat with Greg about some Little League issue) and was completely rude. Having his awful negative energy thrown at me was the last straw. I felt like shouting, “OK Day! I give up! You win!! I’m waving a white flag over here!!”

*sigh*

Oh yeah, and the capper? Our internet went out last night as I was trying to post. Go figure. So rather than what I had planned, I thought I’d share some fun stuff that went down last week. Let’s end things on a positive note!

1. WHITE ELEPHANT SALE.

Dottie and I and our pals The Dames went to the Oakland Museum’s huge benefit jumble sale. SO much good loot was scored, and all for a good cause. I think it needs its own post….stay tuned!

2. WOLFIE’s SAVING HIS ALLOWANCE.

Wolfie has been doing chores around the house to earn his allowance. He is so cute about it, helping with laundry and asking if he can sweep and water plants. He FINALLY saved up enough to get a special game for his 3DS and was literally dancing down the aisles of Target!

3. SWIMMING CHAMP!

In other Wolfie new, he passed into the next level of his swimming class. Hurray! He was so proud of himself.

4. SAM IS STILL CUTE.

Despite the butta issue, Sam is still the cutest dog ever. We looooove him. Even when he tries to hog my side of the bed.

5. THE CAT’S ARE STILL ANNOYED BY SAM.

But we love them anyway.

SO there you have it. I’m sure this won’t be the last day that gives me a little unexpected bump in the road. I think they key is to let yourself be bummed/annoyed/sad….but then move on. Even when you realize in the chaos you didn’t get a chance to shower and your hair is so tangled it’s starting to dred.

Sydney’s Nursery Tour // Vintage Meets Modern

The other day I received the sweetest email from our lovely reader Camila. Besides saying the nicest things, she included a photo of her little girl Sydney’s sweet nursery—and I KNEW I had to see more! Camila did not disappoint. It’s utterly adorable. Very modern and hip, but lots of darling little vintage touches that make it uniquely their own.

Camila and her husband Matt live in sunny Concord, CA… about 30 miles East of San Francisco. We chatted a bit about the inspirations behind their super cute room and all the goodies inside. Let’s take a look!
ALIX: Hey Camila! Thanks so much for sharing Sydney’s room with us. I love it so much! Can you tell us a little bit about the vibe you were looking for when putting this together?
CAMILA: Thank you! We really wanted colors that would take advantage of the wonderful natural light that shines through our atrium. We talked about a variety of themes, starting with an undersea concept and evolving from there. As we found more and more cute pieces that didn’t fit any of our themes, we decided to let the room come together organically. There were so many cool decorations out there, and when we found something we loved, we didn’t want to pass on it because we were holding stringently to a specific theme.
ALIX: Very smart. The walls are actually very similar to the color we painted Wolfie’s room. It was so bold and pretty, it became a driving factor in the things we put in his room. Was color a main influencer?
CAMILA: Yes, but I’d say the best example of this would probably be the wall decals. We found this set of tree decals on Etsy and just fell in love. The creators of the decal set allowed us to customize the colors to better match the room which was key. We loved the stock colors the decals came in, but many of the circles that made up the trees were the same shade of turquoise as the room so we changed those to orange. We loved the birds (especially the owl!) in the tree decals so that pretty much put an end to the undersea theme!
CAMILA: From there we added on a few simple pieces, like an Ikea shelf, light fixture and mod dot curtains, and a vintage orangey red Kroehler chair.

ALIX: These little touches are my favorite. So playful and fun! The tiny fiberglass lamp is adorable and I LOVE the bullit planter as toy bin—very clever!

CAMILA: Thank you! It’s something we had for a while and seemed to be perfect. As for some of the other pieces, the cloud pillow is from Mod Cloth. The robot pillows are from Branch. Other toys were gifts—and the kewpie doll belonged to my mother-in-law. One of our best scores was the vintage, child-size Bertoia chair. It was an Etsy find at a very reasonable price. Luckily the seller was local and we were able to pick it up and save on shipping.

ALIX: It’s so cute. I swear, I have a weakness for tiny chairs.

ALIX: Let’s talk about the more modern touches. Where did you find them?
CAMILA: We were very fortunate to find a gently used version of the Nurseryworks Aerial crib and matching dresser set, because they fit perfectly into our mid-century look. Of course, like most cool modern looking baby furniture, they retail for a lot and were way out of our price range. As luck would have it, however, a friend of ours was just getting ready to sell this set on Craig’s List. It seemed like fate that the entire nursery set came together for a fraction of the price we’d expect to pay retail!
ALIX: Nice! I have to say this is a great tip. Most people take really good care of their baby furniture and sourcing gently-used pieces can be a great way to go. Especially if you want something a little more spendy. That dresser/changing table it pretty gorgeous.
ALIX: And speaking of gorgeous, not nursery tour would be complete without a peek at the little lady who occupies this grand room! Look at this little cutie!

Camila, thank you SO MUCH for sharing this room (and baby Sydney) with us!
