Retro Rainbow // Color of the Week PINK!

Howdy howdy howdy! It’s time for another installment of the Retro Rainbow. It was soooo awesome to see your enthusiasm for this fun new summer series. Just in case you missed it, Jenny and I are scouring our own personal vintage collections to come up with a color-themed series of fun. We call it “thrifting our basement” and I have to tell ya, we are having a blast! As always, you’ll find my own colorful contributions over at frecklewonder and Jenny is showing off her amazing stuff right here. Let’s just say she gives new meaning to Pretty in Pink! Take it away Jenny!

Hi Modern Kiddos! Freckle here and lemme tell you what: I’m so excited about PINK! I knew it wouldn’t be hard to find some sweet pink treasures around the house but I surprised myself a bit with just how much I found. I realized I was going just a leetle bit bonkers with the pink and actually had to narrow down my picks for the week a bit. Wanna know something funny? When Alix and I were working out the details of this here correspondence in color, we were like… “Well how many items should we feature each week? Four? Six? Eight, tops??” and here we are on week two and we both had to be held back at a dozen. We are maximalists—through and through!

So, I hope you enjoy this collection of pink things. It really was fun to put together. Oh, and the fact that we both featured old metal kitchen toys? Total co-inky-dink! You know we don’t talk about what we’re picking… it’s as much a surprise to us as it is to you! Happy Wednesday! — Jenny

Ahhh, another excellent round up! The little fridge is amazing. And the brooches. And can I just say that I totally want to be wearing that dress, as I run down a pink sunset beach with that adorable sand pail in my hand!!

Oh yes, and don’t forget to swing on byfrecklewonder to see what pink treasures I managed finds!

{Psst! Did you miss last week’s red/white/blue extravaganza? You can check out Jenny’s here and mine over here!}

Why Paris?

Well, in a nutshell, it was wonderful.

But before I get into all the fun moments, the nutty shopping, the great meals, I must share with you the one thing that was the reason I had to do this.

When I left my old job, I wanted to do something wonderful with that little bit of time in between my next gig. And I chose Paris.

Paris was always tantalizingly out of reach. I lived in London for a year after college and planned a trip there, but due to a missed flight I didn’t get to Paris. And well, life just started happening. Jobs, boyfriends, the right boyfriend, the wedding, the baby–it all pushes those little life list things down.

Until you realize life is passing you by and you still haven’t been to freaking PARIS. Which is what I realized awhile ago and I promised myself that I. WAS. GOING.

And I needed to go to Paris, so I could go to the Louvre and see Nike of Samothrace in person.

Now, what is Nike of Samothrace? It is to me the most beautiful piece of sculpture. Ever. It is the reason I decided to pursue Art History in college.

This is her in all her beauty.

I know, right?

I remember when Professor Havelock slipped the huge, old, glass plate slide into the projector.  There was an audible gasp in the darkened auditorium.  Professor Havelock went on to talk about how this was found in the sea and that is was Nike, the goddess of Victory who landed on the prow of a ship with her linen shift drenched with sea water and clinging heavily to her body. The creases of linen over her body are the best example of Hellenistic sculpture ever.  And I remember her final parting comments on this exquisite piece of art– its imperfections–the lack of a head and arms actually enhances its beauty. Perfection isn’t necessary to make something extraordinary.

Lynne, my travel mate and one of my dearest dearest friends, and I planned one of our days in Paris around going to the Louvre.  We started with a lovely lunch at Cafe Marly, a divine little cafe right next to the Louvre.  Where we watched people outside milling around I.M Pei’s wonderful sculpture.

Prepped with a full belly and a properly fizzy head from a couple of glasses of champagne we headed to the Louvre.  This nice fellow let us skip the lines and within five minutes we were in and headed toward the staircase.

But along the way, oh the glorious things I saw. It was like being immersed in my Art History 101 class again.

I turned a corner to go up the stairs and there she was.

I started to weep when I saw her.  And weep. And weep.  Seeing something you wanted to for twenty years can really impact you. It did me.  After 15 minutes of quietly weeping, I walked around Nike slowly three times and tried to soak up every crease in the marble, every feather in her wings.  It really was breathtaking in its beauty and craftsmanship.

I took like a dozen pictures and none of them did her any justice.

I must admit, I was in such a daze it took me about a half hour to pay attention to the other pieces of work at the Louvre.  But after the whole experience I came away determined to knock more things off my life list.

But I’d say the best gift from this whole Paris trip was the feeling I have more amazing travel to plan in my life.

So, here is to new trips!

PS: Expect two more posts about my Paris trip this month!

Vintage Cuties: Twelve Dollars or Under

Well, I’m back in SLC for work and looking forward to seeing some friends like Alison from Petit Elefant and Jet Set Carina.  But this weekend, I have been oh so busy snuggling with the Peach before I head out on the road again. I love going to SLC for many reasons–just the sweet thrift shopping alone makes it awesome. And everything was so darn cheap compared to SF, that it inspired me to feature the Vintage Kiddo Retro Round Up that were all under TWELVE DOLLARS! Whoohoo!

And on with the show!

I always get a bit weak in the knees for gingham. And this little charmer in the top is a great example. And only NINE DOLLARS! From Etsy seller, Wee Little Ones Vintage.

This sweater is so adorable it should be featured on Cute Overload. I mean, really. Have you see the kitty paws? It’s almost too much. And only TEN BUCKS! From Etsy seller, Bondplace Vintage.

Um… Who wouldn’t want to put these great red overalls on their own super dude? And for a mere TEN SMACKEROOS! From Etsy seller, Potato Cake Vintage.

A-tappa tappa tappa!  This record should be on wall in your kiddo’s room. It is awesome! And a penny under TEN SMACKEROOS! From Etsy seller, Audrey Blissful.

This sweater is in a word, perfection.  It kills me that it is a tinge to small for the Peach. Sob! But my loss–your gain! From Etsy seller,  Olive Vintage. And a mere TWELVE CLAMS.

A little jogging teddy bear? Yes, please! And a mere NINE FITTY! Hot dog! From Etsy seller, Little Reader Vintage.

Uh, this plaid shirt?  Someone better buy it today. And just under TEN GREENBACKS! From Etsy seller, UDA Kids.

But what of a bit of plaid for girls? How about this pink frolic? Yes, that will do and only for NINE BUCKEROOS. From Etsy seller, County Line General Jr.

These little felt little plush animals are perfect for summer travels.  Easy to put in a pocket and just TEN SPOT. From Etsy seller, Sweet Shop Vintage.

Here is one of my favorite books as a child. Etiquette and Raggedy Anne! Sweet! And a mere FIVE and a HALF DUCKETS! From Etsy seller, Peppermint & Cocoa.

Happy Monday, friends!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Fun Stuff to Browse

1. SOUPER CHIC.

I’m no food blogger, but I thought this post on how to style and shoot food and recipe images was really fascinating. Read it here!

2. SUPER 60s SUPER MODEL.

Colleen Corby was one of the biggest models in the day…you maybe not remember her name but you sure knew her face. She was wholesome and All-American but still had a little vavoom poutiness that made her super popular. There is a whole Flickr group with awesome 60s/70s pics from magazines like Seventeen. See more here.

3. PENCIL IN AN AWESOME SUMMER

These pencils would make everything fun to write up! I’ll take drive-in movies while I suspect Greg would like afternoon naps. Ahem. From esty seller one fine dae.

4. STEP RIGHT UP FOLKS!

Wow. I’m so into these color photographs of circus performers from the 1940s and 50s. They’re amazing! If you love them as much as I do you can even buy  The Circus Book: 1870-1950 yourself!

5. A MOVING WEDDING INVITATION.

Jessica Hische is an amazing illustrator, designer, and typographer. She has created many brilliant book covers and logos and fonts and prints….and most recently she created the gorgeous film titles & credits for Wes Anderson’s film, Moonrise Kingdom. Yeah. She’s legit! So it should come as no surprise that her wedding invitation is totally cool. It’s an animated storybook. SO sweet.  See it here. (Thanks to Dottie for showing this to me!)

6. IN-FLIGHT AWESOME SELF PORTRAITS

HAH! How funny are these?? Nina Katchadourian takes photos of herself in the lavatory mirror when she’s on a flight— using toilet paper and seat covers as costumes. She modeled the images after 15th-century Flemish portraiture. Brilliantly weird. (via Design Mom)

7. SILENTLY SIX FLAGS.

These Holga images shot by photgrapher mark mouton of an abandoned Six Flag’s Amusement park are totally haunting. See them all here.

8. BLUEBERRY DELICIOUSNESS

Oooooh this blueberry treat from my friend Tracey looks SO yummy and so summery. I can’t wait to make it!!

9. OLYMPIC-SIZED EXCITEMENT.

I am soooooooo excited for the Summer Games next month, are you? I am always totally into the ladies gymnastics, the swimming, the diving….but this year I’m completely transfixed by the men’s gymnastics team. Did you happen to catch the Olympic Trials? We caught it by chance and it was AWESOME. The two top men’s contenders—Danell Leyva and John Orozco —both have such cool stories. John Orozco is utterly amazing to watch and has a fascinating back story, coming from a really rough neighborhood in the Bronx. His mom was always in the stands, covering her eyes nervously. Really sweet. His team mate and friend/rival is Danell Leyva (above), a Cuban immigrant who is coached by his step dad and mom. Besides being easy on the eye, Danell is crazy talented. He came in first place at the trials. His coach/dad is HIGH-larious, known for his super animated sideline antics. Check out this short video of Danell on the high bar (and be sure to watch his coach at the end!). GO TEAM USA!

10. BONUS VIDEO #1
OMG this is the the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Who knew a lady ventriloquist could be so awesome??

10. BONUS VIDEO #2

HAVE AN AWESOME WEEKEND!

The Besty of Etsy :: ReStyle posters

Who doesn’t love a little catherineholm enamelware, but who can afford it? Especially, the oh so elusive teapot. But you can afford this wonderful poster from Etsy shop, ReStyle and hang it in your kitchen. What a nice treat to see every morning with your cup of joe. Sigh.

But o-ho, this very talented Czech illustrator, Jan Skacelik, has found inspiration not only in the beauty of catherineholm enamel ware but in a lot of other things that would make us a bit swirly with love.

Like this ode to Star Wars:

Or this charmer:

Wouldn’t this be fabulous in a nursery?

I’m very fond of this one too!

As you can see, this illustrator has many charms!
