Retro Rainbow // A Weekly Summer Series

Oooohlala, what do we have here? Is it a collaboration between @galexina and @frecklewonder? Why YES it is! We (Alix and Jenny) have known each other for over ten years—yet we’ve never lived in the same state. Along the way, our fabulous friendship has spanned 2786 miles, three different blog platforms (hello LiveJournal!), the birth of two kiddos, and countless conversations about life, love of pop culture and our common obsession: thrifting vintage goodies. A collaboration has always been a no-brainer, but what to do? After batting around numerous ideas over the years we finally figured it out. One of our favorite things to do is share finds—delighted by new discoveries (“what?? I’ve never seen one of those!”) happily jealous of every awesome score (“that was a dollar??”) and equally horrified (but giggling) at crazy modern day thrift prices (“they wanted how much for that??!”). It’s always fun!

So we are pleased to introduce a special Summer Series: the Retro Rainbow! Each week we’ll pick a different color theme and then challenge each other to “shop at home” to show off cool vintage finds. I’ll be sharing my finds over at Frecklewonder, and Jenny will be sharing her fun finds over here on Modern Kiddo. We hope you swing by both spots and enjoy this fun correspondence in color!

First up, in honor of the 4th of July we present a collection in RED WHITE & BLUE. Take it away Jenny!

Ahhh those pennants!! And the chairs….and that dress? OH YES. Jenny has the best stuff. That was so fun! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

We’ll see you next week when the color will be……..???

OH, and don’t forget to swing by frecklewonder to see my red/white and blue picks! HAPPY 4th of JULY!!

PS for more vintage-y goodness, check out Jenny’s instagram feed @frecklewonder. I’m @galexina and our girl Dottie is @missdottie!

When the Bicentennial was THE Fourth of July

Of course Independence day is always a blast.  Parades, grilling and hanging with friends on this special day.  But in 1976, it was so much more. It was the BICENTENNIAL!

It was a time when Betsy Ross became a fashion icon.

And everything was covered in red white and blue! Even beer!

And the parades! Oh, they were awesome!

But if we are going to talk about parades, there is one place that really rocks parades.  That would be of course…

Every now and then you find wonderful remnants of this groovy time when people loved history! Like this great fire hydrant.

And if you are lucky, you’ll find a little reminder of the Bicentennial in your pocket.

I just can’t help but smile every time I find one of them.

Have a great fourth of July, friends!

Link Hootenanny:: I took Friday off….

Last Friday I was all set to get the Friday Hootenanny together….I really was planning on sharing some tasty links. But then there was this:

and of course this:

And whaddya know, it was suddenly Sunday. That’s what summer is all about, though, right? Spontaneous pool parties….eating red Otter Pops…seeing gorillas on bicycles, cuddling with the dog….and having your 8 year old look at the flower in your hair and say, “Mama, we’re not going to a wedding you know!”

I hope your summer is going fabulously as we gear up for the Fourth of July! And for those of you caught up in all the storm shenanigans of the east coast and midwest, BE SAFE!!! I’m stunned by all the fallen tree images and black outs on instagram. We’re thinking of you!

Vintage summer treats (and one perfect one for Fall…)

Ahhh!!! It is so good to be home! After being away for two looong weeks on top of my little five day jaunt to Paris, I have truly missed my little family.  Saturday I spent the day with my little Peach having a blast of “girl time” which included soccer, ice cream and some fun at the beach.  But as she was sleeping off her fun day, I spent some time getting some goodies for you!

To me, this is one of those perfect little summer dresses. If only it was the Peach’s size! From Etsy seller, Breedbaby NYC.

We all love Fisher Price and the company’s great toys, but I’ve never seen the PURSE before.  And in this great sockitome yellow! Genius! From Etsy seller, Linda’s Time Compass.

With this heatwave frying a good chunk of the U.S. a little fun Health Tex tank top would be a welcome addition to any kiddo’s wardrobe! From Etsy seller, HennyPenny Kids.

These pinkie pie sweet overalls with flowers on the knees is killing me. A wonderful addition to any little girl’s wardrobe! From Etsy seller, From Little Reader Vintage.

Wouldn’t this amazing vintage handmade pony be great in a little baby’s nursery and watch the baby love it for years to come! From Etsy seller, Ets Place.

Leisure suits for toddlers? OK!  And with guns on them, which I know is a little nutty, but for me it just reminds me of the main boy in Moonrise Kingdom… From Etsy seller, Storybook Retro.

I can’t believe that this wonderful peppy plaid dress is on sale for under $15? So amazing! Terrific for autumn coming up. From Etsy seller, Salvage House.

Can I please have this amazing top to in my size! Seriously! I’m in love with this dandy sailboat pattern From Etsy seller, Ms. Tips!

I would have give away my LeSportSac for these gorgeous turquoise clogs when I was a kid! From Etsy seller, Red Truck Designs.

We started with summer dresses and we’ll end with another one.  And it is another bright peppy item for the “I wish this was in my size” pile. Love! From Etsy seller, Oliver’s Forest.

Happy snappy Monday, friends!
