Ever since Greg, Wolfie and IÂ Â went camping a few months ago, we have had camping on the brain. We want to go to Yosemite. We want to go back to the redwoods. And we want to camp in our backyard. There’s just something about sleeping in a tent that is so cool. From the minute you zippppppp that tent up, your world is transformed. Life gets a little quieter. You hear the rustling of the wind. The chirping of birds. The music of crickets. And you are totally transported. Tents are undeniably magical!
When Kella from Suburban Camping Company got in touch with me I realized we were a match made in heaven. Vintage tents you can set up in your very own back yard. Ahhh! Alas, our love affair was put on hold because they are located alll the way across the country. Drat. But that doesn’t mean a girl can’t pine, right? And if you’re an east coaster, you’re in luck. Take a gander at this:
Amazing, no?? Suburban Camping Companyis the original backyard camping company pitching vintage style campsites that offer awesome pop-up lodging and lounging for backyards and events everywhere. They say they aren’t just offering you a tent they are offering an “experience”. An experience that tastes like burnt marshmallows, sounds like scary stories and feels like wet grass between your toes. And friends, that’s my kind of experience!
The Suburban Camping company lets you buy a tent, rent a tent or go for one of their fun packages, like Classic Camper, Movie Night, the Romantic Getaway for two and even a Harry Potter inspired adventure called Abra Camp Dabra. Cute. CUTE!
They also have a super cute Etsy shop so you can stock your campsite with cool vintage camping goods.
Swing by the Suburban Camping Co. site and I guarantee you will be planning a camping adventure in no time!
Aw yeah. Happy Wednesday friends! Are you all ready for another edition of the Retro Rainbow? I am! This week Jenny and I picked the luscious color of TANGERINE. It’s one of my favorites and just adds such a pretty punch of color to everything. I have to say I think Jenny found some reeeeally extra fun stuff this week. You know, we never coordinate what we pick, so each collection of goodies is as much a surprise to us as it is to you! Let’s see what treasures Jenny unearthed from her own stash of vintage goodness. Oh, and don’t forget that you can find my finds over on Frecklewonder!
Hello Modern Kiddos!!!
Jenny here with some orange picks. Or, TANGERINE, as we’re calling it! Which is so much more fabulous than orange, don’tcha think? I know we’ve told you this every time, but it bears repeating: Alix and I are having a blast with this. As if that’s really any surprise, the treasure hunting is in our blood!! This week, our kids played along too. Alix sent me a funny text yesterday after she suddenly realized that it was Tuesday afternoon so she was scramblin’ and mad dashin’ around the house searching for orange things and as for us? It was just plain old HOT outside and we were taking comfort in the AC. I asked Dotty to find me some orange things and she was so adorable, bringing me an orange Ugly Doll that she wanted to squeeze into every picture. I’ll share an outtake on Frecklewonder tomorrow, mmmk?
I sure do hope you enjoy our finds this week! Don’t forget to pop over to Frecklewonder to see what Alix + Wolfie came up with. You know they’re good.
Happy Retro Rainbow Wednesday, kids! Â xoxo, Jenny

Don’t forget to swing on by frecklewonder to see what tangerine treasures I managed unearthed at Camp Kiddo!
This weekend Wolfie, Greg and I participated in one of the coolest things ever: The Color Run!
The Color Run is a unique 5 kilometres event unlike any other. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that is less about speed and more about enjoying a crazy colorful day with your friends and family. All levels of experience are welcome, all that matters is that you participate—and that you wear white clothing! Why? Because at every 5 kilometer marker, runners get blasted with colored powder, turning the procession into a moving rainbow. And friends, it’s AMAZING!!
Soooooo, the run fills up really quickly and spots in the San Francisco run were all full. But that didn’t stop us! We decided we’d show up anyway to support the runners and check it all out. We weren’t sure if we could bring Sammy  (technically, I think dogs weren’t supposed to be there) BUT he’s such a big love, everyone just lit up when they saw him and ran over to pet him. With his big smile and wagging tail, he sort of became the unofficial “Happiness Mascot” of the SF Color Run!
We started hanging out at the pinkie red kilometer color marker and as you can see, Sammy really got into the spirit of things!
We decided to check out the blue team, and those guys were all was jealous that Sammy was all pink, so they got in on the action too—giving Sam a pretty baby blue bath. The powder, by the way, is an all natural non-toxic mix. It’s corn starch and color—and it’s safe to eat, although the warn you it’s highly caloric. Don’t taste the rainbow…
The race starts out slow….you see a handful of runners coming through, with a lil splash of color. And then suddenly you see a SEA of people and the color cloud gets bigger and bigger!
We didn’t make it over to the yellow station but it was SO great because we could see it in the distance and all you saw was this POOF of yellow. Even if you don’t run, you will still get lots (LOTS) of color splashes.
The finish line is one big colorful dance party…they toss out extra packs of color (and you can buy larger packs like that one up there) and people are just throwing color all over the place. Everyone is bouncing around and grinning. SO. MUCH. FUN! The whole scene looks like a futuristic, candy colored, post apocalyptic water color painting! Hmm, never thought I’d type THAT phrase!!
They gave away free Slurpees and Coconut Water too… Whoo hoo!
I can’t recommend this enough. And it’s a great thing to do with kids (whether they run or simply enjoy the color mania). They have Color Runs all across the country, through out the year. Even if you can’t run, you should head on down and check it out—in some ways its even more fun just volunteering and observing. There was so much happy energy in the place! Everyone was smiling {Special howdy do to our sweet pal Nuala from tea collection, who we ran into there!} Wolfie thought it was the coolest thing ever and wants to start training to run for next year!
PS
We were soooooo filthy when we got home, and it took a while for us all to get cleaned up. So we decided to wait to bathe Sammy til the next day. Um…mistake. The blue dye is reeeeally tricky to get out! He’s nearly white, but still has little blue paws and tail.
PPS
This is the video that Wolfie and I watched back in January, and it was what sold us on the event! I hope you watch it with your kiddos too!
Ahhhh dishes. Are prettier dishes more fun to wash than plain ol dishes? Kinda yeah. I am lucky to have a really awesome collection of vintage dishware. I have lots of different pieces but my main “pattern” is the Franciscan Ware Starburst—an awesome explosion of atomic cool. It was designed in 1954 by George James, and has little pops of aqua and pale green-yellow. I just love it!
It started with a set of coffee cups and a plate. And before I knew it I had plates and platters and salt and pepper shakers and bowls and candlesticks aaaaand….they just make me so happy.
The cool thing about this dishware is the unique space-age design. Nothing is “normal”. Even the plates aren’t really circular. They’re more elliptical. This line of dishes was actually called the “Eclipse” collection and came in two other patterns, Duet (featuring two graphic roses) and Oasis. Oasis is really cool too. I have a whooooole lot of Starburst and couldn’t resist a wee handful of Oasis.
While I love my Starburst, I also like to mix things up a bit and when I found this blue bowl with the sassy curves I knew it was just the thing! I discovered it was from a Starburst-style pattern made by Vernonware called Heavenly Days. The set is really cool. I don’t like the dish pattern quite as much as my Starburst but the shapes and handles of everything are really amazing. And that beautiful robin’s egg blue? LOVE! It’s an awesome compliment to Starburst! I scooped up some smaller blue bowls that are perfect for cereal.
Oh, and if blue’s not yer style? No worries. It comes in pink too! Vernonware “Tinkled Pink” is the official name and it’s fabulous.
Besides being pretty to look at, these dishes are something we use on an every day basis. While they’re totally sturdy, they are over 50 years old and I worry about putting them in the dishwasher. That’s where these guys come in!
(how’d you like that segue??)
Honestly, Method dishsoap is the bomb.Tough on dirt but easy on the environment. Plus I like knowing I’m not muckin’ up my prized dishware with crazy chemicals. We’ve already told you about what big fans we are of Method’s planet-friendly cleaning products, and their dishwashing detergent is no exception! Unlike many detergents/soaps, Method doesn’t include any sneaky chemicals like phthalates (huh? yeah. I was scratching my head over that too.  Phthalates are softeners that have been found to disrupt a person’s endocrine system functions. Yipes!).
Instead of using potentially harmful chemicals, Method’s dish cleaners include derivatives from coconut oil, aloe vera, and purified water. Now that’s more like it, eh? It also comes in a super fun pump bottle, so you avoid goopy spout build up. One word to the wise, however: when the bottle is full, you need to hold it in your hand and pump onto your sponge or dishes. I made the mistake of using it like a hand soap, and pumped it as it stood on my sink edge and got a nice healthy squirt of soap all over my chest. Niiiice. Of course Wolfie and Greg thought it was hysterical.
So one of my favorite things about Method products is that in addition to being fabulously green, they are also easy on the eye, and on yer nosey! The dishsoap comes in vibrant shades and totally yum scents like clementine, ginger yuzu, cucumber…and limited edition fragrances like the crisp lemon mint and zingy lime & seasalt. I have this thing about cleaning scents. I don’t like things too perfumey or flowery. I feel like I’m using shower gel on my dishes. These scents are fresh and clean and SOOOO good. Seriously. Call me crazy but when you’re surrounded by a soothing pretty smell, you DO clean happy. Of course, my cute lil dishes don’t hurt either. Heh.
Which brings me to this! The last installment of Method‘s adorable video mania. GIVE YOUR NOSE A HUG!
Howdy howdy howdy! It’s time for another installment of the Retro Rainbow. It was soooo awesome to see your enthusiasm for this fun new summer series. Just in case you missed it, Jenny and I are scouring our own personal vintage collections to come up with a color-themed series of fun. We call it “thrifting our basement” and I have to tell ya, we are having a blast! As always, you’ll find my own colorful contributions over at frecklewonder and Jenny is showing off her amazing stuff right here. Let’s just say she gives new meaning to Pretty in Pink! Take it away Jenny!
Hi Modern Kiddos! Freckle here and lemme tell you what: I’m so excited about PINK! I knew it wouldn’t be hard to find some sweet pink treasures around the house but I surprised myself a bit with just how much I found. I realized I was going just a leetle bit bonkers with the pink and actually had to narrow down my picks for the week a bit. Wanna know something funny? When Alix and I were working out the details of this here correspondence in color, we were like… “Well how many items should we feature each week? Four? Six? Eight, tops??” and here we are on week two and we both had to be held back at a dozen. We are maximalists—through and through!
So, I hope you enjoy this collection of pink things. It really was fun to put together. Oh, and the fact that we both featured old metal kitchen toys? Total co-inky-dink! You know we don’t talk about what we’re picking… it’s as much a surprise to us as it is to you! Happy Wednesday! — Jenny
Ahhh, another excellent round up! The little fridge is amazing. And the brooches. And can I just say that I totally want to be wearing that dress, as I run down a pink sunset beach with that adorable sand pail in my hand!!
Oh yes, and don’t forget to swing on byfrecklewonder to see what pink treasures I managed finds!
{Psst! Did you miss last week’s red/white/blue extravaganza? You can check out Jenny’s here and mine over here!}
