Vintage Childhood :: The Muppet Show Tonight!

It’s time to play the music…

It’s time to light the lights…

It’s time to meet the Muppets on The Muppet Show tonight.

I know you know the rest of the song.

1976 might be known as the bicentennial year in US, but I will always think of it as the year the Muppet Show debuted.

I would patiently wait through my father’s mandatory viewing of the CBS Evening News for The Muppet Show.  From the first viewing, I knew this was something different.  This was the sophisticated older cousin to the innocence of Sesame Street. This was the Big Time.

This was what we  call the MUPPET SHOW!!!!!

Has any show been as beloved by the Muppet Show? And every one had their favorite muppet, right?

Like Gonzo?  Man, I loved him.

I’m still not sure exactly what he was, but he was a legend with the ladies. Lady chickens, that is.

You just had to love Fozzy, right? Kermits best bud and although his jokes were at times a touch, er. old, his deliver and smile made it all worthwhile.

Is it wrong to love Fozzy and also love his hardest critics, Statler and Waldorf–those curmudgeons in the balcony that had delighted in nothing more than heckling our hard working comics.

I always had a soft spot for Rowlf. Something about being that piano man/bartender vibe about him that was so comforting. And when he and Fozzy teamed up to sing, well, it was something real special.

And for those who always fall for the nerd, here is your prototype–the precurser to the gents on Big Bang Theory–Munson B. Honeydew was your man. With his hilariously tongue tied helper, Beeker.

And the sketches were actually quite genius. Who didn’t chuckle out loud after Pigs In Space? It did also launch the career of the stunning Miss Piggy, who is not only famous for her black belt in karate, her  wonderful fashion (lavender elbow length gloves–IN!) , and of course her clever yet simple diet tip that helped her keep her girlish figure…”Never eat more than you can lift.”

And you work that career! I wonder what her booking fee is nowadays?

And then there was the really edgy rock band, Electric Mayhem, led by the funtastic spider with the gold tooth, Dr. Teeth and his band of misfits, like the wonderous Animal that probably inspired many a drummer who is on the charts today,  as well as Zoot, St. Floyd Pepper and Janice, everyone’s favorite straight haired hippy member of the band.

And they backed up some amazing guest stars!

Like Elton John!

Christopher Reeves!

Harry Belefonte!

Luke Skywalker & CP30!

Don Knotts!

Rita Moreno!

And MUMMENSCHANZ!!!!

Oh, what wonderful chaos.  And all of it managed with utter charm and love by Kermit the Frog. He was the hardest working frog in show business. And with such grace–with a freak out ever so often.

Image via: Halloween Swim Team

Kermit just radiated the sweetness of Jim Henson. Thanks for the amazing childhood memories, Mr. Henson.

Oh Muppets, you’ve been through it all. Movies to fashion. Lunchboxes to live music. You will always be loved.

And Muppet Show is available via Netflix for an easy afternoon of watching. And feel free to dance to the songs with your kids. Because I know I did!  Talk to them about their favorite characters and who the special guest star is.  Remember kiddos have fun when you have fun.  That is half the battle!

What is your favorite Muppet character? What was your favorite sketch?

Have a muppetsational Monday, ya’ll!

Vintage Style :: Mommy & Me Dresses.

Image via: Kitchy-Kitchy Coo

Oh, I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I spent mine sniffing beautiful lilacs from my sweetie over some very tasty waffles. And of course kissing my sweet little girl.

There are so many things that I am very much looking forward to experiencing with my dear little Peach.  So many wonderful firsts, like going on bike rides together, making cookies, but first mother daughter matching outfit? Hee hee!  Er,  I hadn’t thought about that.  Although I  was very impressed by the super mama seamstress, Mena Trott’s Easter ensemble, she did bring up a point that sometimes mother/daughter matching dresses can be a bit well…Mommy Dearest. True.

[Insert wire hanger joke.]

But there is something rather fun and very heart-felt about the matching cuteness of a little and big version of a dress. Like these bits of sweetness concocted on Madison Avenue fifty plus years ago:

Motherly love surely is what would drive someone into early carpel tunnel syndrome to crochet up this mother daughter matching skirt combo. Pattern available via Very Vintage Patterns.

OK, these matching swimsuits are killer.

Cadillac thought mother/daughter combos were the secret to selling cars apparently.

That’s all very nice for advertising, but what about in real life? I mean, look at that well coiffed lady above–who really stands like that?  Well, it turns out this mother daughter matchy match looks pretty darn cute in reality too.  I found couple of great snaps of people rocking the mama/daughter fashion love.

Like this one from Tenacious Snail.  I’m particularly in love with the red shoes Mama is rocking here.

And check out this charming combo. Total South Beach chic.

I don’t know if I would have the gumption to go full dress and matching hairdo, but perhaps a little matchy match wouldn’t be so very bad. Particularly if it was as cute as this little vintage prep mother daughter skirt combo for sale on Etsy from Sassy Sister Vintage.

I can’t lie, but I do see a bit of matching cuteness in my future with the Peach.  Maybe I’ll start with matching knickers, if they were as button as these! Tee hee!

Did any of you do a mother daughter combo? As the mother or daughter?

Welcome to the Doll Haus :: vintage toys

So I started out this week with the intention of talking about doll houses. When I was a little kiddo, I looooved my dollhouse. I would sit in front of that thing for hours, arranging and rearranging the furniture. I don’t even know if I made up stories, I just loved LOOKING at it and organizing it. There’s something about miniatures that gets me every time—things that are little are just cuter!

My crafty godmother made my dollhouse for me when I was around five or six. While it was pretty basic to start, it was still awesome. A few years later my mom and dad surprised me by totally tricking it out—they added a whole story to the top floor, including a music room and a rooftop garden. It was AMAZING. I loved it. My younger brother Karl was always fascinated by the dollhouse (and as a bossy big sister I was always complaining about his curious little fingers messing up my “just so” set up). That same Christmas my mother, who is from Germany and always had a cool dollhouse growing up, had a brilliant idea. She got my dad to build a special farm house for Karl. It was totally amazing. They based it on an old-school Euro farm house, so it had a kitchen/bedroom area on one side and a stable for horses/sheep/cows and a hay loft on the other side (all under one roof). It was kind of genius—and all his little guy friends were entranced! No one had heard of a dollhouse for boys before, and this was the perfect combination. I have to say, my folks were pretty inventive (and progressive) for a family living in Flint, Michigan in the 70s. (I can’t lie, I’m still jealous of the wee cans of Coke and Dr. Pepper the farm house came with…)

So that was the plan. To show off cute dollhouses. But lemme tell you I had a tough time finding cute photos. After pouring through oodles of random, poorly lit images of stuffy Victorian houses, all I came up with were these two photos:

images: top photo from vampire meadow, bottom photo from rubylane

Not bad, right? But alas,  two photos does not a post make. And then….and then people…. as if my mother’s German dollhouse was calling to me from beyond, a random chain of link clicking let me down another path. And  I stumbled upon the Holy Grail of dollhouse imagery: The Puppenhaus Museum. And my jaw dropped. There I found the most delicious collection of vintage 70s dollhouses you can ever hope to see—each with home interiors that are so cool and so colorful, I’d move in tomorrow. Welcome to the Puppenhaus my friends:

Ahhhhh! How I love those chairs and the wall unit! Now check out this classic A-frame:

Did you see that little blue lamp on the top floor? My Tante Maria had one just like it. LOVE! This next Haus ain’t too shabby either:

I’d move in to this sucka tomorrow. I also appreciate the stairs. For some reason my dollhouse, like so many, didn’t include stairs. It never bothered me, but years later when Jenny Kells, one of my 7th grade besties came over, and totally made fun of my non-stair havin’ dollhouse. She made the dolls stand on each others shoulders like second-rate Circus acrobats to get to the top floors…..hah!

OK. One world. WALLPAPER. *sigh*

We couldn’t talk about doll houses without mentioning it’s sweet little inhabitants:

I have to say, those little people never looked particularly comfy sitting in those chairs. What was the deal….you could design the swankiest of pads, but you couldn’t make a brotha’s knees bend??

OK, this one  killed me….a wee hair salon. HOW COOL IS THIS??? Please take note of the proprietress however…

A closer look perhaps? Someone needs her hair did.

But really it was always about the furniture and the sweet little details. Let’s end this post on a high note!

That’s our vintage kiddo toy post for the day! I hope you loved it as much as I did. And I have to ask, did you have a dollhouse? And more importantly….did it have STAIRS?

All images from the super rad Puppen Museum‚ and there are TONS more. Be sure to browse the 50s dollhouses.

Kiddo Rooms :: Georgia’s Darling Retro Nursery.

Oh me oh my! Oh my oh me. So last week I showed you a darling nursery that incorporated GREY WALLS. (Yep, it sounds unusual but trust me, everyone flipped for it, it was THAT GOOD!) This week I thought it would be fun to take a peek at another nursery. The twist?  Those pretty robin’s egg blue walls belong to a little girl!

This sweet room is a special one because it belongs to my clever partner in crime here at Modern Kiddo—Miss Dottie! Well technically it belongs to her darling little girl Georgia (she, of the legendary 99 cent jumpers!). I really love the color palette: pale blue with bold red accents. Soothingly calm-yet-feisty and fun. Hmmm, kinda like Dottie! I think you guys are going to love the fun vintage touches in here.

Remember what I said about hanging old vinyl on the wall? Check out those red vinyl 45s! Add in a little dressie and you have some fabulous wall decor!

I love the sweet 40s/ 50s influence in here—from the little clothing on the wall to the playful flag banner running around the perimeter of the room. Also love the quirky modern touches like those fun plasticky flowers on the wall. So great!

Ach du lieber! Zis cuckoo clock ist wunderbar!!!

Again, LOVE those vintage records on the wall. You’ll also notice some old skool Fisher Price and a fabulous Irmi storybook lamp (which we profiled a while back!).

I am obsessed with vintage suitcases so you can imagine my squeal of delight when I saw that saucy stack of red lovelies! How great are they? They are resting on top of Georgia’s “closet”. Dottie took her old office cabinet and transformed it into a a wee armoire. Super clever, lady!

And of course it wouldn’t be Modern Kiddo if we didn’t take a Vintage Kiddo peek into that awesome closet. Um, the gingham hat bloodhound?? What what WHAT?? Dying.

Thanks little Georgia for sharing with us your stylish and adorable space!

You Spin Me Right Round: Vintage Kiddo Records

Faced with a very rainy weekend, we tried to dream up some fun things to do that involved staying cozy in our home. As I surveyed the crazy mess that we call the living room, I glanced over at our turntable and realized we hadn’t played any records since Christmas. I have a pretty decent sized collection of old kid’s albums and so we spent a wonderful afternoon building Legos, making a cardboard house for the cats—and listening to records. It was awesome! And it got me thinkin’….

image: jaxonista ( alas this isn’t mine. we have a grown up turntable…)

One of the main reasons I love vintage (aside from the CRAZY GOOD design) is because I’m all about the nostalgia. I love listening to the same records I listened to as a kid and sharing them with my little guy. It makes me giddy to the point of tears. I’m not kidding, I got totally verklempt when Wolfie decided he loved Free to Be You and Me, the Marlo Thomas 70s extravaganza. (As an aside you MUST get this on DVD for your kiddo. It’s the best show ever….groovy music, adorable animation, fun songs, rad 70s stars. I LOVE IT.)

OK. Back to business. Like most vinyl junkies, I love that crackle as you gently plunk the needle on the record, but I also love the ritual of sitting cross-legged on the floor and checking out the album art. Vintage kid’s records are a treasure trove of amazing artwork. You’ll find cool illustrations, bright colors, amazing fonts and genius type treatments. Since you all seemed to enjoy our little trip down memory lane with vintage Fisher Price, I thought it’d be fun to check out some awesome records covers. C’mon, let’s go!

First up, Romper Room. I love how formal these kids are—little bow ties and riding caps? Where is this preschool?? The songs on this album are all pretty adorable, even those Know-It-All braggers on the Doo-Bee Song. (click to take a listen) Hmm, I should write a new version of this song for bloggin: “Doo-Bee a Comment Leaver!” “Don’t be a Lil Lurker!” hyuck hyuck.

image: the awesome *julia

The line art on this next one is super duper, but let’s face it….any record that’s all about helping mommy at clean-up time is aces in my book. Ya hear that daddies??

image: tweedlebop (who is a pal of mine and an amazing illustrator in his own right!)

Look how super stylish these kiddos are. The cute lil pigtails on blue dress girl, that fab green stripey shirt on the little “A” boy—and check out that jaunty hip action on the kid on the right. I love him! I can just hear him shouting, “C is for CHARO!”

image: neatocoolville

The Disneyland record and book combo was a personal favorite of mine. I had so many of these little “read-a-long” books and can still hear that British woman saying, “You will know it is time to turn the page, when you hear Tinker Bell ring her chimes…..LIKE THIS.” They usually hired different illustrators and I even like that record/book logo in the top left. I never had this particular record, but  I’m so glad I found it. Who knew the wolf was such a groovy guy??

image:  *julia

OK, this one is from my personal record…..and while the music was ok, I remember thinking the album art was brilliant. Ernie, Bert and Cookie Monster as the Bee Gees?? Amazing. I remember all the teens in the neighborhood were groovin’ to “How Deep Is Your Love?” but they didn’t have anything on me and my disco Sesame. I felt like I was SO COOL. The cover was a fold-out and the inside art work was hysterical….Grover doing his best John Travolta dance moves. Check it out here, but then please come back….I’m not done with you yet!

image: Alix, modernkiddo

Sometimes I’ll find a great album cover but then the music is just kinda “meh.” Lemme tell ya, Sesame Street and Disney single-handedly produced some of the best records…I swear they had great artwork AND amazing songs.  How can you go wrong with a musical Monster-Osity?? That’s a whole lotta fun fur goin’ on.

image: Alix, modernkiddo

The artwork on this album is just the tops….I love the scripty way they’ve written “Puff” and his little sparkling scales are so adorable.

image: leifpeng

I’m not sure if this is very PC….I guess it should be called the Ten Little Indiginous Peoples….but….well….I just can’t help it. I think the font on “Ten Little” is fab and the little I.Ps are adorable.

image: Picture_Books

These illustrations make me crazy, they’re so good. They look like they were plucked straight out of a children’s book….that little boy and the little city?? Amazing.  I want a whole book like this. Also, that little crazy space age bubble head logo character in the red square?? I don’t know who or what he is, but he’s AWESOME.

image: wardomatic (a genius illustrator with the coolest wife ever, hula70)

This is another one that looks like a storybook. The playful little train is like charm on wheels. I’m intrigued by the “dramatic play and participation” bit. How dramatic can a play get?

image: wardomatic again

I remember when I spied this one in the record bin at Thrift Town … my eyes bugged out. LOVE that Veruca Salt’s little pink dress…and who knew Violet Beauregarde led a secret double life as ANNIE???

image: Alix, modernkiddo

OK, we take a break from illustration for two SPECTACULAR photographic covers. The hipster kids on this one are so bad ass. Like, “What? Yeah that’s right. I’m about to watusi to On Top of Old Smokey, now I suggest you step off, jack.”

image: Alix, modernkiddo

Hewwwww. Oh Marcy. Where do I begin….the waxy complexion? The vacant look in the eye? THE FREAKIN’ WEIRD DOLL holding her hand?? Honestly I don’t even know which one is “Marcy” but all I know is gingham has never looked creepier. I’m surprised they didn’t call this one, “Lord have Marcy.”

image: The Retro-Spectre

OK, now that I have the heebie jeebies, I feel like we need to end on a happy note. The sweet simplicity of this one is a personal fave. “La la la!” We La La LOVE you Bert.

Tha-tha-that’s all folks! (“Great Alix, first the Ten Little Indians, now you’re making fun of people with a stutter?? NICE.”) Aw you know I’m just joshin’ ya. I hope you enjoyed this little jaunt down the vintage record store aisles! Do you remember any of these? What were some of your favorites?

MODERN KIDDO TIP: You can easily  find vintage kiddo records at thrift shops and on ebay. The tricky part is making sure they are in great condition. Most vintage children’s records are sadly a little trashed, but you have to remember that these are albums that are well worn and well loved. I’ve been pretty lucky to score many that are in primo condition, and it makes a difference! Be sure to check (or ask questions) when buying! If you don’t have a record player, that’s ok….you can frame the albums and hang them in your kiddo’s room. If the record label is cool, or it’s pressed on colored vinyl, you can even hang the record itself!
