Friday Link Hootenanny :: Fun Things To Read

It’s Friday! I’ve been down in L.A on a freelance assignment. The agency is really cool, but it’s def hard being away from home for 2 weeks. Usually when I go to L.A. it’s for a shoot or for editing—and our days and nights are filled with obligations and client schmoozin’. This is much more solitary. I’m just kind of chilling out in the hotel room. Eating dinner alone. Reading. It’s nice but weird. Lucky me, however, because my guys are coming down to meet me for the 3-day weekend! We have some fun plans in the works. In the meantime, here are some snazzy things that caught my eye over the week. HAPPY FRIDAY everyone!

1. HOLLY WOULD.

Jen, of Honey Kennedy, currated some super charming looks, inspired by old hollywood movies. See them here.

2. SHOW SOMEONE YOU CHAIR.

Hearts aren’t just for Valentines Day, you know. How fun is this mid-century themed desktop wallpaper? Download it for your laptop here.

3. OUT ON A LEDGE.

This installation from Buenos Aires-based artist Leandro Erlich is rather amazing. Mirrors and optical illusion make it look as thought visitors are climbing a Parisian building.  See how it really works here.

4. I SEE YOUR POINT.

This clever bag over at CRAFT is both stylish and relatively easy to make. How fun! I also love those colors. See for yourself here.

5. WHAT IF I NEVER TOOK THESE?

I often struggle with the question, is blogging interring with life (we’re so busy documenting life, are we actually enjoying it?) or is it enhancing life? (We often push ourselves to try new and fun things and capture moments we might otherwise never had in the past!) Jenny at Dos Family celebrates those special little moments she caught. See them here.

6. MAN VS OCTOPUS

Eartha, my love, you are so very clever. I love this adorable pepper octopus! See how to make it here.

7.  ROCK YOUR BODY

I featured a skeletal cake back during Halloween, but now someone has taken that idea and done it one better. A “body parts” themed birthday party. The eyeball pinata is particularly awesome. See more here.

8. CUDDLY COTTAGE.

Aye. So sweet this little set from Alice Apple. She’s currently out of stock but will be updating her Etsy shop soon. Browse her other goodies here.

9. DOWNTON GIRL FASHION

I discovered Downton Abbey late in the game and quickly devoured the entire first season. SO GOOD. I haven’t started Season 2, but I’ve been recording them and I can’t wait! Victoria came up with a genius collection of clothing inspired by the show. And it had me grinning. See it all over here.

8. BUT WHAT ABOUT THAT COUCH??

There’s been a lot of chatter about this insane Kate Spade apartment that is now for rent (it belonged to Pamela Bell, one of the original four partners and for $18,500/mo it can be yours too). The place is gorgeous, but I’m most transfixed by the insane vintage couch. She had it covered in muslin and then invited her young daughters class to come over and draw all over it. AMAZING.

9. I SEE LONDON.

Hauntingly pretty images of a nearly empty London, early Christmas morning. See more here.

10. SHHHHH.

This post on going quiet and giving up social media was moving and wonderful. Could you log off? Take a look over here. (via shutterbean)

Have a most wonderful weekend my friends!

Friday Link Hootenanny :: Fun Stuff to Browse

Oooh lala. The count down is ON friends! We’ll be heading to Michigan soon and can’t wait for a little winter wonderland (as cold as it will be). What are your holiday plans? Are you travelling?

While you hustle and bustle off to your many holiday events, here are some fun crafty links to make things a little merrier.
1. Orange You Wild About Paper Snowflakes

We had a fun evening making paper snowflakes the other night…I have no photos because hey, sometimes it’s better to just live life then spend your time documenting (note to self…sometimes as bloggers I think we get so caught up in the documentation part of life! But that’s a whole other post….). Last year I was quite taken with these gorgeous snowflakes from How About Orange, and the instructions for making them were really easy! So we made them again this year.  Find more here.

2. A Brilliant Sputnik DIY

Check out this most incredible DIY project from Dabito at Old Brand New. He used one of those mobiles originally meant for photos and swapped them out for Christmas ball ornaments to make a sputnik style mobile! GENIUS! See how he did it here.

3. Super Rad Retro Gift Tags

So you’ve wrapped up your prezzies but you don’t want a schlumpy gift tag to muck up your wrapping. What to do? Why not download these adorable gift tags from My Paper Crane! Heidi makes thee most amazing little plushies you ever did see and she sweetly created a whole sheet of vintage-inspired gift tags for all of her readers! Download them here.

4. Simply Darlin’ Christmas Angel

My gorgeous pal Pilgrim has done it again and created this super cool downloadable angel. Have your kiddos color her in and maybe even add some glitter pom poms on those wings! She’d make a swell table centerpiece or just an awesome addition to your holiday decor. Download it here!

5. Star of Wonder, Star of Light

This star is so pretty, it would be lovely for Christmas or Hanukkah. See how to make one here.

6. This Little Wall of Mine.

Glitter stencils? Oh heck yeah! I think this is so festive and fun. You can see how it was done over at Katie’s Pencil Box.

7. Create Your Own Christmas Crib

These are so sweet! And you can download them for free here.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most fun. These sparkley glitter clothes pins from Ez over at Creature Comforts are just SO cute. See more here.

9. Pretty Paper Dollies

A mug of hot cocoa, a roaring fire and a fun night of paper doll magic. Thanks to Miss Emily Martin, these little paperdoll downloadables are just the ticket. Get yours here.

10. Paper Bag Princess.

My talented friend Teri is the Craft Editor at the awesome Bloesem/bkids and she is always coming up with fabulous things. This simple, but amazing wreath is made out of painted paper bags. Paper bags? Yes! SUCH a clever idea! See details here.

Bonus Video:

We love Chronicle Books so very much….I was totally charmed by this adorable video they sent us for the holidays. I think you’ll love it too!

8. ZILLIONS OF DRESSES FROM CORAL VINTAGE.

The lovely Jenny over at frecklewonder has a fabulous profile on Christine of Coral Vintage. The story of how she became a vintage seller is as awesome as the amazing collection of dresses she sells. Read about it here. While you’re over there, give my girl Jenny a round of applause for her brand spankin’ new site design!

9. THE FASCINATING WILLARD ASYLUM SUITCASE PROJECT

WOW. This last one you’ll want to spend some time with. Photographer Jon Crispin had the opportunity to document the contents of several hundred suitcases that were in storage of the Willard Psychiatric Center in Willard, NY. The suitcases belonged to patients admitted sometime between 1910 and 1960. The collection is so poignant and curious. Read about the project here. And see more suitcases here.

10. BONUS VINTAGE VIDEO

This video is faaabulous. I love how they call them spectacles. You’ll certainly LOOK like a spectacle wearing these! (hyuck hyuck) Sooo good.

BONUS VIDEO

We are big fans of the Fantastic Mr. Fox film. I read about this interactive puppet show version running in Shreveport, Louisiana and it sounds INCREDIBLE. More than just a puppet show, audience members done headlamps and “crawl” into the fox hole….part theater and part art installation. I sooo wish it would make its way to San Francisco. Read all about the experience here. It sounds every bit as fabulous as Mr. Fox.
