Real Life :: Valentines Day With the Penguins

Last year on Valentines Day, Greg and I decided to take Wolfie to the California Academy of  Sciences, which is located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. I’m sure you’re thinking, “Um, the Academy of Sciences? Valentines Day? What the what??” I know it doesn’t sound very romantic, but stick with me here folks! It gets better.

Golden Gate Park is huge and lovely—a little bit bigger than Central Park. The Academy of Sciences is just one of the many attractions and it’s really fun. They have a “living rooftop” which totally reminds me of Teletubbie Land!

(I look like I’m making Stink Face up there…please ignore me and focus on my sweet child….thank you)

My little rosey cheeked Valentine. It started out foggy, so we bundled up, but then it got a little hot. Classic San Francisco.

After a some fun wandering around in the sun, we went inside the museum.

There are all kinds of hands on exhibits, and a great “wild animal” diorama collection—which I totally love.

The aquarium is also very popular:

But lets face, we were here for one reason. THE PENGUINS. You might be thinking, “What’s so special about penguins?” Imma ’bout to tell you!

Every Valentines Day, the Hall of Science does something really cool.  Children of all ages are allowed to decorate special red paper hearts….and then the valentines are passed out TO THE PENGUINS! And I have to say, it is a sight to behold! The penguins LOVE the valentines! They strut around with the in their mouths, preening and showing off. Amazingly, they don’t eat them— in fact they are quite competitive about them!  It’s hilarious to see them waddling about, all puffed up. The boy penguins were bickering over them, all for the honor of “delivering” them to the girl penguins, who were in these little caves setting up their nests. Have you ever seen anything so cute??

“One moment, mi amour….I bring you zee heart!”

Wolfie was enchanted. He was totally grinning from ear to ear.

Whoops….someone’s heart fell in the wading pool.

We had a really terrific day. The place was totally packed….and guess who else was there?? The super gorgeous Halle Berry with her little girl Nala! ( i love a good celeb sighting….) She was just strollin’ around like a mommy with her little one. Really cool. Honestly the place was so packed, I think she managed to slink around relatively unnoticed.

We ended the day with a trip to the cafe for a wee post-penguin snack.

Ze Milk Moustache, she is always en vougue!

It’s funny, at one point earlier that morning, Greg told me that he and Wolfie would have to sneak off at some point to “take care of a some things” (which usually means buying last minute flowers for mama, haha) but in the glory of the sunshine, flowers were forgotten….and you know what? I wouldn’t have had it any other way! We came home happy  and hungry….so we ordered a big ol cheese pizza, had a little picnic on the living room floor and watched Finding Nemo (in honor of the aquarium). I have to tell ya, Valentine’s Day was pretty darn perfect. I’m looking forward to this year and another fun adventure!

Real Life :: The Dames Supper Club

There’s nothing more I love than spending time with my family….but let’s be real. Sometimes a girl’s gotta hang with her girls, right? We all have crazy busy schedules, but a little group of us (including myself and Miss Dottie) decided that we could commit to a once-a-month dinner date. I know a handful of people who have little dinner groups where they get together and try out new, hip restaurants—which I have always thought was a really fun idea—so I was all up for it. My friend Doe, however, came up with a really fab spin on this. Her invitation read:

“Hey retro lovin’ mama! Does your child know all the words to The Archies and The Partridge Family? Is their favorite cartoon The Jetsons? Is your child asking YOU how to make a jello-mold? Are you finding it a challenge how to explain to the neighbor kids why all your paintings are paint-by-number?? Well you need to join The Dames de Gâteau!”

The concept? We get all gussied up and meet once a month for dinner and drinks at an old school “retro” restaurant. Of course we always leave room for dessert—hence the name, Dames de Gâteau (Ladies of Cake)! Doe’s sister is part of a similar group in New York (The Dames du Beouf!). I gotta say it was SO MUCH FUN! We chose  Joe’s of Westlake as our first target. Joe’s is an old school Italian restaurant with fabulously retro decor…..

We were pleased to see a whole fleet of seniors strollin’ on in when we got there. The joint was hoppin’!!

Hahaha….OK, I know it totally looks like no one is in the place in that photo, but I swear it was packed….that picture was from the end of the night!

The bar area has this really groovy seating area with a big fireplace.

A little jazzy band was playing, the King Hutch Duo: featuring King Hutch on piano and Eddie on drums! (Between you and me, I think Eddie is getting a bum deal…how come King Hutch gets top billing?? It’s a DUO! We kept cracking up about it. I told Dottie I was going to change the name of Modern Kiddo to “Princess Alix….and Dottie on drums!”

We took our meal in ze Cascade Room.

I tried my very first martini. (I know, right? I realized I have never had one. And here’s why…..it’s completely gross! Sacrilidge I know. But hey, I’m more of a gimlet, lemon drop, cosmo girl….I like a little juice in muh drink. Cosmo’s are one of my favorites but Sex in the City kinda ruined them for “groups of girls going out” and that wasn’t the vibe I was going for. Martini. *shudder* )

The food was hearty and abundant. And very very old school. Deep fried scalllops? Mmmmm. Yes please!  The sides were almost bigger than the main—everyone got homemade raviolis.

The “Child’s Plate” cracked me up….roast beef or pot roast??? haha. Wolfie would be horrified at those options. Yup, this place is legit. Nary a chicken nugget in sight!

Afterwards we went to the bar/lobby area. The decor is crazy. Here’s Doe whispering the secret location of our NEXT get together!

We really had a blast and I think laughed the entire meal. It was such an amazing group of ladies. As fgor the food, well. Kind of hit or miss. My chicken parm was delish….Dotties steakie was just so-so, but we weren’t really doing this for the fine dining. We were doing it for the company. And THAT was first class all the way, baby!

Presenting, the fabulous Dames de Gâteau Supper Club ladies!

I highly recommend a little dress up supper club for you and your pals! Once a month isn’t too much to commit to and it’s soooo fun. We had a great mix of ladies—some of the girls were old friends, some were ladies I didn’t know as well but always wanted to know better. If you and your girls decide to do something similar, please let us know! Better yet, blog about it and link over here! I guarantee you you’ll have a blast…oh, and don’t forget to leave room for dessert….

Real Life :: Walking in a Winter Wonderland.

I love living in California…for the most part, we have amazing weather here year ’round. Yet as a Michigan girlie the thing I always crave are the four seasons. I love warm, sunny days but I have to confess nothing is more magical to me than freshly fallen snow. When I go back home for the holidays, I love having a white Christmas….there is something so peaceful about walking around outside and all you hear is the snow crunching under your feet.

When we arrived, we had warm coats and hats, but were sorely lacking in the foot wear department. As evidenced by Wolfie in his parka, wooly hat and…Yo Gabba Gabba Vans. Brrrrr! I know my parents think we’re the Crazy Californians.

Someone definitely had cold toesies, poor bunny. I promise, we bought snow boots shortly after this photo was taken. The coat, I must say, was fab. I bought it at Old Navy when they had their annual 50% off sale. Crazy cozy and super warm. (This is it.) You’ll see more pics later on in its full comfy glory!

We headed to my parents lakehouse, which is the best place ever. The lake is always a magical thing to see. In the summer, everything is green and lush and the water is as smooth as a piece of blue glass. We love to swim, watch the turtles and putter around on my parents pontoon boat. It kind of blows your mind in the winter when you realize that you can walk on the water…

One of our little traditions at the lakehouse is a tasty waffle breakfast. My mom’s waffles are the best. She has this really awesome old waffle iron from the 50s (maybe 60s?) and it makes the best waffles. Nice and crispy outside but a little cakey  inside. Always with real maple syrup, please. Yummm.

In addition to snowboots, my mom got Wolfie his snow pants—and they were so cute, like little overalls. The fake furry hat I brought back from Prague! He was quite pleased with himself in this get up.

Then it was outside to build a snow man. Or should I say, snow men! Wolfie and Greg went to town and made a ton of them.

Wolfie was Mayor of Snowman Town. I kind of loved the teensy one….and the little stick arms are the best.

See? That jacket was the bomb. Cozy AND cool. (faux fur, natch….)

Look at my sweet little snow bunny…..so cute and rosey cheeked. And wowzers, did he LOVE the snow.

Greg and I went for a drive around the lake and it was so pretty. The trees look so stark against the white sky.

I was pleased to see that my favorite little vintage snail playground toy (which was all rusted up last year) had received a fresh coat of paint and was lookin’ brand spankin’ new!

One of my favorite times of day is when the sun sets and suddenly the snowy white landscape is covered in a blueish glow. It truly feels otherworldly.

I know for you lovely folks stuck in the deep of winter there are cold realities….shoveling snow, icy roads and the biting wind. If it’s any consolation, Californians are wusses. Especially San Franciscans. Most of those lovely Victorians don’t have central heating and we freeze our buns off when the temperatures “dip” into the 40s. But in my mind I see you all hunkered down by a crackling fire, with a mug of cocoa….enjoying a silent night under an inky blue sky. A girl can dream, right?

Real Life :: New Year’s Eve Sparkle Style

Happy New Year!! How was your night? Did you have a fabulous night out on the town? Or did you hunker down at home and have a cozy night in with family? We did a little bit of both!

New Year’s Eves are a definitely a much more low key event since we had Wolfie….but we still like to get out there and have a little fun. For the last three years Greg’s kid band, The Time Outs, have played a fun Count Down show (where they do an early count down at 7pm for the kiddos). This year they decided to take a break and actually just relax on New Years. My friend Lynn hosted a little party and it was super fun—four families, seven crazy kiddos and seven even wackier parents.

Me and my girls like to dress up and we all agreed to get fancified for the night.  I decided it was the perfect occasion to bust out muh TALL SHOES. I really rarely wear these, partly because I walk a lot and partly because I’m a mama and it just ain’t practical. BUT as far as tall shoes go, I love ’em….and they are comfortable enough that I could wear ’em at a party where I was only going to be standing around or sitting.

You’re probably thinking, “They don’t look that bad Alix….” but check out these babies:

Hatch cha cha! I love the flower details on the platform and the heel. They’re really pretty shoesies…..Kiki the cat seemed to think so too.

Oh yeah, here’s the rest of what i wore:

+ dress, vintage little number with feathers on the sleeves, thrifted
+ vintage rhinestone “tie” necklace and pin
+ black lace slip, thrifted
+ pinkie red tights. Target
+ crazy clomper shoes, Prada. Yes. That Prada. Bought at the Neiman Marcus outlet for a steal. I love the flowers on the heels. I fully admit I nearly wiped out on a pine cone walking up Lynn’s driveway. On the up side, I kept forgetting I was no longer 5’3″ and enjoyed towering over my friends for once! OK. So I didn’t tower. But I was at least nose-to-nose….

I got a little snowflake flower headband in Michigan that I wore for Christmas….I figured I’d bust it out again. It’s totally a poor man’s Starlette crown, but I felt festive! (I swear I will purchase one this year FO SHO. I am obsessed. So pretty….Sue is a genius!)

But back to the party. It was loads of fun. Mellow enough that it was a great time but lively enough that we felt like we had a great night out. My friend Lynn, the hostess, is a New Orleans girlie and she made a huge pot o’ gumbo and a red velvet cake. I asked my Twitter pals for some good appetizer recos and ended up making everything they suggested—blue cheese stuffed dates, wrapped in bacon (AHHHHH! So good), little mini mac-n-cheeses (also quite tasty) and some brie-filled mushrooms which were also super duper easy and good.

My friend Denise (the glamour puss below) is always hilarious and lots of fun. She brought lots of cool goodies for the kiddos to play with—including little laser rings and sticky mustaches. The mustaches were a huge hit and at some point we all ended up wearing them . And by “we” I mean the grown ups. The kid’s had NO INTEREST.

I waltzed into the kid’s room to show off my ‘stash to Wolfie who took one look and said, “Will you PLEASE take that off??” We were totally an embarrassment to the kiddos. Sigh.

We all ended up playing Rock-n-Roll Charades (where you act out band names and try to guess ’em….it was hilarious…my best rounds were Aztec Camera and Rush…Conway Twitty and Crosby, Stills and Nash were my worst!!) and then everyone made party hats from a stash of crafting supplies Lynn rounded up. This was a huge hit with the kids! My friend Chrissy’s little boy Kirby made this amazing black feather thing that was cracking us up—it looked like something Cher would wear. He kindly let me wear it:

So that was our crazy night. I think we started off 2011 in a great way….lots of great friends, good food and a fine dose of silliness. I hope you had an amazing evening too and lets make this new year the best one yet!
