Meet Lola!

Friends, have I got a little cutie to share with you today. Meet Lola Birdie, one of the sassiest lil’ ladies we’ve had here and hoo boy is she a little cutie to boot.

I saw piccies of this one on Instagram and had to ask her mama to let us feature her here as a Weekly Kiddo! Thanks, Anita for sharing Miss L.B. with us.

I knew Lola was a character when her Mama told us that Miss Lola started talking at NINE MONTHS–before she could walk or even crawl. Clearly this is one clever little kiddo who loves chatting.

When she’s not buying low and selling high, Lola loves Yo Gabba Gabba, Peppa Pig, Caillou, and Shrek movies more than anything. But she’s also very much in touch with her feminine side, as she loves to dress up like a pretty princess and her favorite color is pink!

Lola Birdie absolutely ADORES music, just like her musician father. Along with being his biggest fan, some of her other favorite songs are Justin Bieber’s “Baby”  and The Four Seasons “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and anything song from Yo Gabba Gabba.
Her favorite instrument is the drums and runner ups are tambourine and guitar. She also likes to play the piano and sing.
Her favorite toys are daddy’s iPad, all of her dress up clothes from her dress up trunk, her play kitchen along with play foods and princess makeup vanity. She loves to pretend. For nap time she loves to grab any of her favorite books including Paul Frank’s High Five book, Olivia, Monster Munch, Sam the Owl and her Olivia doll she got for her birthday.
And Lola is an A class cryer. Anita, I’m amazed you didn’t hand over the cookie/iPad/keys to the car when faced with such a cutie crying!
Her favorite holiday (so far) is Halloween. She loved going trick or treating. But I have a feeling she’s going to be REALLY into Christmas.  As you can see from her styling Santa costume.
Lola Birdie is a vegetarian who loves, I mean LOVES fake chicken nuggets, pizza and burritos as well as blueberries, tomatoes, oranges and pinapple. She is also obsessed with pirate’s booty and popsicles and she can never pass up a “good peanut butter and honey sammich!” according to her mama!
Thanks for stopping by, Lola and bringing your cuteness to Modern Kiddo!

Crank up the hi-fi! It’s Alix’s Retro Holiday Mix Vol. 2

By now your home should have been filled with the sweet sounds of a vintage Christmas! Thanks for all the kind tweets and comments—I’m so glad you guys liked my Retro Holiday Mix, vol 1. This week’s mix is a tad more lively (as opposed to smooth and groovy), and chock full o’ fabulousness that I know you’ll love.

For those that missed Monday’s post, here’s the dealio! Over the past years I have wanted to digitize my vinyl as a way to preserve it—and so I could share it with others. I’ve transformed a fair amount of my albums to MP3 and thanks to the help of my super cool friend Spencer I’ve managed to build a fun menagerie of retro MP3s. I love cranking my old LPs around Christmas and wanted to share some of my favorite vintage holiday tunes with you! Some highlights of this mix include faves from my childhood albums: Sammy Davis Jr., The McGuire Sisters, The Pepperment Kandy Kids and the Jackson 5 (my top fave retro holiday album).

So without further ado, I’m pleased to present:

Please share the love and feel free to tweet/pass around. I just ask that you credit me, pretty please, @galexina!

{PLEASE NOTE: MIX IS OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED!}

Vintage Holiday Decorations Make Me Happy.

The holidays are one of my favorite times to go thrifting! There are treasures galore and nothing makes me happier than finding little vintage Christmas goodies. They are so playful and colorful. A few weeks ago I went on a big ol thrifting binge and scooped up some fun items to add to my holiday collection.

Most thrifts have a big ol area set up for “seasonal” goodies and while lots of thrift stores are getting picked over, I find that holiday decor and what not is always plentiful! Things I love to look for: vintage ornaments (Shiny Brites! they have the cutest boxes, but you have to look carefully to make sure they aren’t too faded or chipped), little holiday animals, sitting elves, ceramic holiday figurines from the 60s and 70s, dishware, linens (i found a great runner and some cute table cloths!), lawn decor (yes it’s true! Greg scored some amazing vintage lawn decorations a few years ago) and then, of course, Holiday RECORDS!

I’m obsessed with little Dream Pet reinsdeer. They’re so cute! I found all three of these golden horned  fellas at the same time. The front deer (who has golden eye lashes, thank you very much) was found last week!

This little fella is a moose who lost his antlers, but I still think he’s a cutie. He came from an estate sale….

These glasses are so fun. I don’t have all 12 Days of Christmas—we still need Two Turtle Doves and Ten Ladies Dancing! I didn’t snap photos, but i also have some fun holiday tumblers (perfect for egg nog and cocktails!)

This little cutie is the source of debate over here. Wolfie likes a proper star on the top of the tree. I think she is pretty awesome. But I don’t want to impose my taste on the entire family ALL the time (just most of the time, heh….). So when he informed me that this year was a STAR year, I sadly packed her back up. I feel like last year we did the star too…hmmm.

Have you been finding some fun vintage holiday goodies for your house? Or have you done a vintage holiday post yourself?  Add the link in the comments so we can see! I’d just love to see some of your favorite Christmas treasures!

PS

I wanted to include one of those little widgets so your blog links would be right at the end of the post, rather than in comments. But the one i found was super complicated. Anyone here used one that they could recommend??

Presenting: Alix’s Retro Holiday Mix vol 1

The past two years I have made some super fun Holiday Mixes. Here’s a “re-print” of last year’s post and the link to download. Enjoy!

Christmas time  is without a doubt my favorite time of year! It has been ever since I was a little girl. I love the lights. I love decorations. And I LOVE THE MUSIC. As a result, I have been collecting vintage Christmas records for ages—there is something about a holiday song played on a hi-fi that makes it even more festive. Reminds me of the music my parents would play for us when we were kiddos.

Back in the day, Christmas music was so much more fun and interesting. Nowadays I feel like all we get are the “diva” croonings of the latest R&B star slaughtering an old carol with vocal acrobatics. In the 50s, 60s, and even 70s people actually wrote new christmas songs and did innovative versions of old standards. And here were TONS of compilations featuring all the stars of the day. I especially loved the album artwork—take a look at just a few of these:

This next one has a rather worn and uninteresting-looking cover (bowl of apples by the roaring fire, anyone?) oh ho, but just you wait!

Open this lovely LP up and see what’s inside……

A pop-up house! It’s so cute and adorable….

But on to the REAL reason behind today’s post. As most of you know I’m an obsessive thrifter and vintage lover….and as a result I have amassed a big collection of cheesy-but-delightful holiday records. Over the past years I have wanted to digitize my vinyl as a way to preserve it—and so I could share it with others. I’ve transformed a fair amount of my albums to MP3 and thanks to the help of my super cool friend Spencer, I’ve managed to build a fun menagerie of retro MP3s. I wanted to share with you some of my favorite vintage holiday tunes! So without further ado, presenting:

ALIX’S Retro Holiday Mix! Vol. 1
It’s all goofy “cocktails-by-the-fire” kinda music. Some highlights?

“Too Fat for the Chimney” — Gisele Mackenzie
“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” — Loretta Young
“A Christmas Song” — Shawn Phillips (sorta dixieland cowboy xmas)

And of course the groovy smooth sounds of David Cassidy
“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”— The Partridge Family

It’s an eclectic mix and I’ve played it non-stop the past few years. Feel free to link here and share the Christmas love!

Retro Round Up Muppet Monday!

Few things have delighted me as much as seeing the success of the new Muppet movie!

I cannot deny or confirm that I chose my college alma mater based on it being featured in Muppets Take Manhattan, but I can tell you that my love of the Muppets is strong.  I even wrote a post about them last year. Don’t even get me started on the show hosts because we’ll be here all day.

But what makes them even more awesome is that you can share the old school vintage Muppet goodies easily with your kiddo or add them to your own Muppet shrine that you might have made in your back closet. (I’m just sayin’…)

I’m sure milk tastes even better in this muppet glass. From Etsy seller, Bring the Funk.

A nice beginning puzzle for the neophyte Muppet fan. Of course Kermit’s in the sidecar… From Etsy seller, From Lost to Found.

Want to be the coolest kid in the cafeteria? You can be with this lunchbox! Pigs In Space was the best! I know you are saying it in your head right now. PIGS… IN… SPAAAAACE!!! From Etsy seller, Kevin’s Kollectibles.

I so need to write a post on latch hook rugs. But until then I will just marvel at the genius of this Fozzy the Bear latch hook rug.  Look at the extra long yarn for the ears. Well played, Caron. Well played… From Etsy seller, Magpie Apothocary–who may or may not have a Kermit Latch hook still available.

Oh, Miss Piggy!  The gal who said, “Never eat more than you can lift.”  Rocking the Jane Fonda look here in this brilliant magic pen painting book.  Oh yes, there certainly is magic here. From Etsy seller, Jolly Jawa.

The Muppets Musicians of Bremen? OK! From Etsy seller, Staircase to the Attic!

Oh Gonzo, you… well, I don’t know what exactly you are, but you sure are cute! Especially as Gonzo the Great.  And this rare stuffed version is too cute for words! From Etsy seller, Scott McKinley.

“Kermit had good rythym,” said Etsy seller, Polly Go Lightly.  And who wouldn’t with this great Kermit tambourine?

If there was ever a toy that needs to come back, it is Colorforms. And this Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy Dream Date Color Form set needs to be bought RIGHT NOW. From Etsy seller, Hippie Jo.

You know this was on Nancy Kerrigan’s wall when she was a little girl.  From Etsy seller, Krafts Keep Me Sane.

I will end my Muppet Monday with this wonderful sweet gem from Etsy seller, Funky Art Divaa keychain that summarizes all of the awesomeness that was Kermit.

Happy Monday, folks!
