H&M Gets Spooktacular for Halloween!

We love h&m around these parts. They make the best jeans for little dudes and have such cute stuff for little girls. So it shouldn’t have come as any surprise that when they decided to do Halloween costumes for kiddos they kinda hit it out of the park. Check out these crazy cute little ensembles. The suave pirate? That tattoo man pulloever?? The mini Marie Antoinette? LOVE. And there are tons more, like a cool mermaid and a beetlejuice inspired stripey suit for boys and girls.

One of the things I love most is that most of these costumes are totally flexible—you can get a variety of costumes out of each! (Pirate coat = Swashbuckler! George Washington! Mozart! Headless Horseman!) I’m also imagining many a kiddo wanting to wear some of these in every day life too, the quality is really excellent.

But really, the best part is that 25% of all the proceeds go directly to the UNICEF All For The Children fund. Yup, 25%. Nice one H&M!

You can buy them in store or nab them online here.

Hello, M.K readers! Remember us? It’s Lindsay & John / Bird & Cleaver; we make food. Seems like we’ve been away forever. Duty calls, we suppose. For what it’s worth, we’ve missed being here, and we are glad to be back!

In the past few weeks, we have spent a large amount of time watching many of our friends heading off for vacations and fun adventures. Being that it is not vacation season for us, all we can do is wish them well…….. annnnnd be secretly jealous of all their impending fun. In particular, the one that is most on our minds is a tropical beach honeymoon! Ugh. Of course, it had to be on the week when it actually started to get a little colder; a cruel reminder of the impending seasonal changes. We just have to keep telling ourselves, our time will come.  Not the honeymoon part; that was ages ago. We are really just interested in the beach relaxation part. Well, that and sipping anything with an umbrella in it! Somehow, we are just going to have to tough it out. Soon enough, it will be our turn to get outta town for a little tropical down time. Until then, we will just have to pretend we’re someplace exotic, right from the comfort of our own home. We think this tasty libation ought to do the trick.

the getaway

2 oz vodka
1 tablespoon tamarind paste
1/2 lime
2 oz coconut water
2 oz orange juice
3-4 mint leaves + more for garnish

Muddle tamarind paste, vodka, lime and mint until all juice is released from lime. Add orange juice and coconut water. Shake 45 seconds.  Strain over ice. Refreshing, tangy  and deeeelicious. Enjoy!

Retro Round Up:: Fall for All.

I think this was the weekend that Fall fell.  It definitely feels like Autumn.  You just want to cozy up at night with an extra layer of wool next to your skin.  And you smell the wood fires if you walk about your neighborhood at night.  It is one of the reasons why I particularly enjoyed rustling up this week’s bounty of vintage cozy goodness. Enjoy!

I remember this dolly when I was a little girl, playing with it in my doctor’s office. From Etsy seller, Magpie and Hen.

This train wall art filled with vintage Disney characters is too charming for words! From Etsy seller, 1 Sweet Dream Vintage.

This little knitted top is just so sweet and cozy at the same time. From Etsy seller, Gentlefolk.

Oh, if only I could cram the Peach into this darling darling little dressie. And would you look at that little belt buckle? LOVE! From Etsy seller, Little Mitten Vintage.

This sweet turtleneck was made for jumping in piles of leaves. I love it! Thanks for posting, Lishyloo!

How about this darling thermal onesie to keep your widdle one cozy. And the mushrooms are too cute too.  From Etsy seller, Pretty Penny Vintage.

Don’t Forget to Send Me Your Homemade Halloween Costume Goodness!!

I’ve already been getting some amazingly awesome Homemade Halloween costumes from people…..but I’m greedy….I still want MORE! Did you make an outfit for your child last year? Was is spectacular? Or was it a fiasco? Either way, we want to see! Just drop me a note at Alix {at} modernkiddo.com. These DO NOT have to be vintage photos. In fact, the more recent the better!

Here are some highlights from last year’s Costume Parade:

Beautiful Bela is one of the most creative kiddos I know—as is her mama Karen (of Misha Lulu fame). Check out this phenomenal Alice in Wonderland costume….complete with Rabbit’s house. Curiouser and curiouser!

Katrina (CaliKatrina) stole my heart with the simplicity of her little Ewan in this little ghost. It’s SO Charlie Brown, I just love it!

OMG, would you get a load of Sarah Ivy’s amazing son Finn as Baby Bowie???? This kid, I tell ya.

How about this adorable (a-thorable??) Thor! Amazing mom Cheri (i am momma hear me roar) made this rad out fit for her little guy!

I’ve seen quite a few little Snow Whites in my time, but honestly little Stella is just 10x cuter than most! Thanks to Melissa of (whileitrains) for sending her our way!

I love simple and sweet costumes and this one is awesome! Little Eames as Elmer Fudd! Whaddup putty tatt??

OK. This is amazing. Carrie Anne (thelittlebigblog) turned her sweet cutie into Baby Sushi. BABY SUSHI!!!! Cuddly and cute.

Well, HELLO DOLLY! This might be the cutest thing I have ever seen! Mama Stacey (hartandsew) turned her sweet Little Miss into a wind up dolly.

And our Hall of Famer: two years ago little Olive blew people’s minds with this darling rainbow.  Her mama Greta (from LayerCakeShop.com) is so talented! (And no she can’t make you one friends…even though we receive SO MANY emails from people asking if they can buy this!).

OK people…send me those costumes! Even if it turned out a little wonky, we love them ALL! Alix [at] modernkiddo .com

Help sewing mamas! How do you get your kiddo to actually WEAR the clothes you sew for them?

I love to sew.  There is something quite wonderful about sewing something for your daughter.  When I was pregnant, I hoarded vintage children’s patterns like a crazy person.  Oh, the darling cute vintage adorableness that I was going to swath my sweet child in! Quick and cute patterns that were a great training ground for trying out different sewing techniques that I would later try on myself.  Every year I would start out with a long list of projects for my girl.  But by the time I finished making these sweet little skirts, dresses etc, she would barely be able to fit in them. Sigh, that growing child thing can be such a bummer.

I did have a few bits of success.  A skirt here:

A sweater there:

A crazy orange princess dress that nearly drove me to drink:

But then I decided to get real and make her this little bit of cuteness:

Out of this super cute fabric I bought and the result. THIS!  Gorgeous isn’t it?  I mean, c’mon. I LOVE it so!

But does she? Nope. Not even close. I got her to approve the fabric and the pattern but actually getting her to wear it? NO DICE.  She started to cry when I asked her to put it on. Like big wet tears and a complete temper tantrum as I tried to cram her into this blasted little smock. Even promises of candy and watching all the Peppa Pig AND Sofia the First AND Olivia for the rest of the night couldn’t make her wear it.

So, I ask you fellow sewers out there—how the heck do you get your kids to wear the clothes you slave over? Seriously? Any tips, tricks, or suggestions?

Help a sewing mama out!
