This weekend we had a fun little getaway with some of our friends. The impetus for the trip was a big milestone birthday bash for our friend Damon. A huge group of people would be gathering in Guernville, CA at a funky venue for a special “this is your life” style party. Greg’s band was playing the show and it was really touching to see so many people from Damon’s life (literally, elementary school friends, old room mates, co-workers and more!) show up. We ended up renting a lil vacation house with some of our good friends and it was THE BEST TIME EVER. The place had a surprisingly huge living room/kitchen area and a BIG deck with a gorgeous view. HEAVEN! Did I mention it was dog friendly? Oh yes. Guernville is only 2 hours away, so it was totally do-able but also far enough away that we felt like we were gettin’ outta town. I have to say, splitting a rental is a GREAT way to have a much more affordable getaway. And picking a location that’s actually pretty close to home makes it easy peasy! I highly recommend a local getaway!

Kiddo Travels // Palm Springs Vintage

 photo PSvintage4A_zpsfbc4ae0c.jpg

My Palm Springs recap continues! When we went to Palm Springs a few months ago, I of course wanted to do a wee bit of shopping. There actually aren’t that many vintage stores in Palm Springs proper — there are lots of high end furniture shops, but not a lot of fun “lets poke around and discover some treasures!” kind of places. Here are two I think are worth a peek!

 photo PSvintage3b_zpsa1cc8cd5.jpg

While waiting for breakfast at Cheeky’s, I wandered down to Deja Vu Vintage {664 N Palm Canyon Drive}. They have a beautifully curated collection of classic vintage dresses. Lots of fancy labels and evening gowns, so as a result, the prices are pretty darn spendy—but it’s a really lovely boutique and there are always fun, more affordable “finds” you can score if you really browse the racks!

I have to confess, my top fave place to visit for a vintage fix is Dazzles. This place is alllll about the quirky retro home and there are SO many glorious things crammed into this place. Michael, the owner, is FAAAABULOUS! I loved him. The housewares are colorful and they have an amazing selection of jewelry.

Ahhhhhh! How fun, no?? It make me want to run back down there. If you have more time than we had, there are some great thrift stores! And if you head outside of the city, the Rt 62 Vintage Marketplace in Yucca Valley is supposed to be really fun. My friends Danielle and Heather went to Pioneer Town just last weekend and it looks really quirky cool! If you have any tips or suggestions for other fun spots, please let me know!

Kiddo Travels to Palm Springs // The Saguaro Hotel

 photo PalmSpringsBlurcopy_zps162cb113.jpg

We knew we wanted to stay at a fun hotel—with an awesome pool. There are SO many great options, but we ended up at that Pinterest dream, The Saguaro. I gotta tell you friends, it was totally fantastic. For a color loving gal like myself, I was in heaven!

 photo Saguaro_1_zps8ea91c4e.jpg

 photo Saguaro_2_zpse49ba99c.jpg

This former Holiday Inn resort was completely renovated and reimagined by architects Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat and they’ve turned it into a colorful playground of modern design.

Named after the iconic cactus of the Sonoran Desert, The Saguaro is a vibrant stand out in a sea of “understated chic” modern hotels. Ain’t nuttin’ understated about this place! The attention to detail is fab — air conditioners are even painted to match the room’s color schemes and all the pool towels are a vibrant pink. For a “hip hotel” the pricing was pretty affordable. Oh, and just in case you’re like me and had a few doubts, you pronounce it ‘Suh-gwarh-oh’. Let’s take a look around!

 photo Saguaro_1b_zps303b8934.jpg

REALLY EXCELLENT POOL.

 photo Saguaro_7_zps57685058.jpg

When you go to Palm Springs, one of your main criteria should be the pool vibe. It’s hot down here people! I have to say this Olympic-size resort poolis pretty perfect for families and couples alike. The deep end is actually in the middle—and each “end” of the pool is a shallow section. That means there is more space for kids, as opposed to having all the kiddos crammed into one splashy end of the pool. But it also means that the middle “deep end” is a bit of an oasis for grown ups. It’s also conveniently located right by the bar. Smart! Oh, and there are TWO hot tubs. Hubba hubba. We went in November, and the temperatures still climb pretty high that time of year. Once thing to note is that once the sun sets, it sets FAST. By 4:30, the pool was completely shady and the temperature started to dip.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

 photo Saguaro_2_zps4aeef530.jpg

Nearly every room has a balcony or patio and is accented inside and out by the brilliant colors of native Mojave wildflowers. We requested a pool-side view (the other option is view of the glorious mountains) and Wolfie LOVED this! He’d pop out there every morning to see if anyone was in the pool and we loved standing out there as the sun was rising. If you have really small children (or a kiddo who is a little more rambunctious) request a patio instead of a balcony. The rooms themselves aren’t particularly fancy and the bathrooms are a tad small (you can tell it’s a refurbished motel) but for the price (compared to many of the other much more spendy hotels in the area) it was just fine.

 photo Saguaro_3_zpsabff0392.jpg

ALWAYS MATCH YOUR SHOES TO YOUR ROOM. Hah.

 photo SaguaroRooms1_zps6977a735.jpg

 photo SaguaroRooms3_zps0861c4a6.jpg

 photo PS_colors_zpse2b61439.jpg

AND THEN THERE ARE THE DOORS.

The rooms themselves are colorful and cozy. It’s a refurbished old-school motel, so all the rooms face the inner pool area, but all the doors are on the exterior, facing the parking lot. Normally this would be a bit of a drab scene, but not at The Saguaro!

Oh, there are no elevators. Which isn’t a big deal, since it’s only a three story building…but something to keep in mind as you pack!

 photo PScolor2_zpsd76e5fff.jpg

While you’ll probably want to head out and explore the city itself, there are two restaurants on site. Tinto (a “Basque-influenced eatery and tapas lounge”) is a pretty tasty restaurant. The somewhat livelier El Jefe is more of a cantina/bar/lounge and has smaller bites to eat. When we were at the hotel, it was a really great mix of people. Mostly couples and adults but also enough families that Wolfie felt welcome. Oh, and it’s a dog-friendly hotel too, which was awesome. Just keep in mind the heat if you decide to bring Fido! You can’t keep pets in the hotel room alone, and the pavement can get really hot on their lil paws.

 photo PS_doors4_zps0615c967.jpg

All in all we gave The Saguaro a big thumbs up! I’d definitely stay there again. Some other family friendly hotels: The Ace (super popular “modern bohemian” hotel that is very welcoming to families), The Caliente Tropics (a tiki-themed motor lodge that is funky!), The Chase (totally affordable and has that great old school small hotel feel), A Place in the Sun (very cute lil inn that was originally built in the early 1950′s as a retreat for the production crew of the film classic “A Place in the Sun” starring Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters and Montgomery Clift!) and if money is no object, The Viceroy (Kelly Wearstler designed palace) and The Parker (Jonathan Adler fabulosity!). I’ll be showing off The Parker next post…Have you ever been to Palm Springs? Where do you like to stay? I always love hearing about new places!

Sometimes You Gotta Zag. PALM SPRINGS.

 photo PS_doors3_zps2ae8e318.jpg

Oh why does it sometimes take me FOREVER to get a post up? So this is a post about Thanksgiving. Wait wait wait! Don’t click away! I promise, no turkeys. It’s about Palm Springs. Typically Thanksgiving is all about hunkering down at home, cooking all day and enjoying a fabulous feast with friends and family. It’s how we’ve always spent it, hanging with our “local family” (flying on Thanksgiving is pretty exhausting/crowded/stressful/expensive so we haven’t done it in quite a while). But this year we wanted to do something different. Sooooo, we hopped in our car and drove down to Palm Springs. It was totally different from anything we have ever done, and many of our friends raised a brow (“Wait what? You’re going where?”) but it was such a relaxing and doable holiday for we Northern Californians. It left us asking, “Why haven’t we done this before??”

Palm Springs is a special place for us, because it’s where Greg and I got married. It’s also stuck in an amazing mid-century time warp that we love. Really fabulous architecture in a desert oasis! It’s kind of a photographers dream….so I hope you won’t mind indulging me in a few posts about our pretty pretty adventure. The weather has been cold and rainy here, so it’s been fun getting a peek at some sunshine.

We love going out to breakfast…we went to Cheeky’s {@ 622 n. palm canyon dr.} and it was SUPER yum. Some highlights? Greg got the eggs bennie and a grown up slushi {“antioxidant acai, blueberry and kale icee…oh my!} and I got some amazing waffles with lemon curd AND I couldn’t resist trying The Bacon Flight (5 kinds of bacon! Including maple balsamic, rosemary sugar and jalapeno!). The one odd thing on the menu was Wolfie’s breakfast—the buttermilk and corn pancakes. I assumed they were cornmeal, but it was a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with some big ol sweet corn kernals tossed in. Wolfie was horrifed haha.

It gets crowded, so you have to wait a bit but we had a great time!

It was so special to share the place where we married with Wolfie.  (You can get a peek inside the house here!)

I have lots more pictures to share…a couple of fun vintage shops, and I wanted to share a bit more of the SAGUARO hotel as well as the glamorous PARKER hotel. It was just the big Modernism Week in Palm Springs and I was checking out all the fun photos my friends Heather and Danielle posted on instagram and it sooo made me long for the sun!

Friday Link Hootenanny // Oh yes.

 photo Hoot_Kitty_zps0223bfcd.jpg

HAPPPPY Friday Friends! Did you manage to scoop up any goodies from the Mikasa Su Casa Grand Opening? I’m still eyeing those enamel pins! (not like I neeeeeed more.)  We had a sudden bit of sunny warm weather over here, so I’m hoping Wolfie and I can get in a little dog walking and outdoor fun this three day weekend. Do you have any fun plans? Do tell! Until then, here are some fun things I found while poking around the web!

1.  A PARTY OF A WALL.
 photo confetti_1_zps2f28b3b6.jpg

How fantastic does this giant confetti wall look? SO pretty. And so simple. It’s just one of the fabulous DIY projects you’ll find in Beci Orpin‘s cool book, Find & Keep. Definitely on my list of “ones to buy”.

2. FIVE VINTAGE BATHROOMS, BY I.P. FREELY

 photo RetroBathroom_1_zps7f799c34.jpeg

I feel like the Count on Sesame Street…”Not one, not two, not three, not four but FIVE! FIVE VINTAGE BATHROOMS! WAHHAHAHA!”  Pam at Retro Renovation always finds the ultimate in midcentury decor. She recently posted an amazing home that had FIVE vintage bathrooms, complete with gorgeous tile. Wow. Here is a little teaser, but head over to Retro Renovation immediately to see all of them!

3. A PICTURE TELLS A THOUSAND WORDS.

 photo over2_zpsabbb4a82.jpg

During Thanksgiving my Instagram shut down on me and wasn’t allowing me to comment or respond and it drove me BATTY. I discovered Overgram, a super cool free app that allows you to add text to your images. SO awesome. I actually upgraded to Over, the official app (you get more fonts and no watermark) and I really love it.

 photo Over1_zps00f31209.jpg

 photo over5_zps653c6240.jpg

Try Overgram for free (if you are trying to save money, the free version is pretty great— and for 99 cents you can get the water mark removed) OR bust out the full $1.99 and get the more deluxe Over. (thanks to Victoria for posting about Over and reminding me that I wanted to share it too!)

4. POST VALENTINES YUM.

 photo bean_1_zpsf0945bc0.jpeg

Tracey posted all these tasty TASTY recipes as a “What to Make for Valentines Day” guide, but man I’ll be making these allll year long! Check them out here.

5. MY HOMIE.
 photo Rachel1_zpsfaf9b414.jpeg

My friend Rachel has two kids and yet still somehow manages to craft up a storm and have a fabulous, picture perfect home. I love how put together, yet cozy and liveable it is. Check out her home tour here.

6. GRIME FIGHTERS WITH A HEART OF GOLD.

 photo windowwashers_1_zpsc3bd2f9a.jpeg

This image has been making the rounds and I just love it. Last October, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh worked with Allegheny Window Cleaning to give the young patients a special Halloween treat. Kids woke up to find characters like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman and Captain America washing their windows. SO special.

7. LORD OF THE WATERCOOLER.
 photo elijah1_zps78b92264.jpg

Oh Elijah. This campaign for Alexander McQueen is pretty cool. You don’t see the fellas modeling as much as the ladies. See more pics of a more dapper Frodo here.

8. ZIP IT, SMARTY.
 photo ziplocbag02_zpsd95f9e6c.jpg

This clever way to customize ziplock sammie bags is so simple it’s GENIUS. See how here.

I am so enamored with the sweet series Design Mom Gabby is doing with her kiddos in France. Each one is SO special. I’ve shared some of them already…this one doesn’t disappoint either!

HAPPPPPY FRIDAY my friends!
