Vintage Kiddo Retro Roundup

Oh Monday, I know you are not the most popular day of the week.  People dread you and even the Bangles wrote a song about what a rough day you are. But fret not, friends—I have rounded up a love bouquet of vintage goodness for you all to chase away any Monday moodiness! Hurrah!

This little dress is perfect for a sweet summer day, don’t you agree? And that little ruffle is so on trend, don’t you think?

Great find from Dirty Birdies Vintage!

Speaking of summer, I am head over heels for rompers or jonjons. They are so nice and light and keep the Peach cool on the most sweltering days. And this jaunty sailor romper is a grand one for this summer.

From: Recy.

And RocketGirl hipped me to another fabulous seer sucker one, but I can’t find the link. Miss Jody would you mind posting it? It is so darn cute with a carrot on it.  UPDATE: Found it! Voila!

Jeans and little boys just seem to go together, but it’s nice to mix things up a bit of pattern. Like these sweet plaid pants. Imagine with a pair of converse and a cool Threadless t-shirt.

I like your style Oakmom!

I love these little darling blue leather shoes!  Imagine them with some homemade shoe laces made out of pretty flower  bias tape, eh?

The Peach has a true love of kitties, as many little girls do—so I know this charming little jumper will go fast. It’s KITTYTASTIC!

I’m crazy about this terrific boho embroidered shirt.  It could so easily be dressed up or down–imagine with a great little skirt in a matroyshka print or even just with jeans.

You kill me, Apple Vintage with these great finds!

I don’t know why, but I just can’t say no to some vintage country goodness–like this nice and large size 14 vintage cowboy theme shirt, featuring cati and cowboys.  It’s made out of canvas, so it could be a really cool summer jacket for a boy (or a rather petite lady)…

From the fabulous Stiletto Girl Etsy shop.

If your kiddo loves dinosaurs (and really, what kid doesn’t) this groovy green sweater would be a great buy!  I don’t know what kind of dinosaur this is, but I think itsa kickassasaurus?

Lishyloo, you have done it again. It is taking ALL OF MY ENERGY not to buy this one myself.  Truly, I must love you readers something fierce because this little dress is just too good to be true with a lion tamer on it.  I wonder what the designer was thinking…”Hmmm… instead of doing a lion, I’m going to do a lion tamer…yeah…” And the red piping that just makes me nearly weak in the knees.  Please someone buy it and then post a photo of your little one in it.

From everyone’s favorite LishyLoo!

I think every boy should know how to tie a tie.  Actually, I think every girl should know how to do it too.  But I think these already-tied vintage ties for little boys are quite genius!  Those prints are just shy of spectacular.

From Etsy Shop LillyQueenVintage.

And one last bonus item that is just too good to not post.  And I must say, I picked this out after reading about Birdie’s new glasses.  As a girl who has worn glasses since I was in second grade and as an adult who owns probably a more than a dozen of vintage frames, I think it is never too early to start  mini myopics out there on the right path—with an awesome pair of glasses. Like these from Midstatevintage.

I hope you had a lovely lovely weekend. And remember: THREE. DAY. WEEKEND!!!

Oh, and for any of our new-found fabulous friends from the EVO conference, stay tuned—we are planning a darn-tootin-rip-roaring wrap up some time this week.

Sweet and Sour: Two Fun Styles in One Tasty Little Post.

Today I have a little mix-n-match for you. I love looking at handmade pretties for children but then there is a part of me that gets totally inspired by the slightly trendier, high-fashion boutique lines. Soooooo, why not look at both? Presenting, A Little Bit Country….A Little Bit Rock-n-Roll. First up:

Do you Kinchi? Ooooh but you should! The fabulous Mirjam is the genius behind this adorable line. Mirjam lives in the Netherlands and her style is both seriously cool and totally sustainable. Each charming little garment incorporates vintage fabric, tea towels and the like for a one-of-a-kind treat. We at Modern Kiddo are big fans of using old textiles to create sassy new garments!

I first “met” Mirjam as a Flickr friend where I was transfixed by her adorable photos of her little girl in handmade gorgeousness. One day she posted photos of her garden and I commented on some beautiful holly hock flowers. One thing led to another and next thing I knew, I received a little packet of hollyhock seeds in the mail—straight from her garden! Take a look at these beautiful photos and then head over to the
Kinchi Etsy shop to scoop up these goodies for yourself.

You like??? Oh I KNEW you would. The 1966 Dish Towel Dress is officially BANANARAMA. OK, now lets switch gears and take a little at something totally different but equally cool.

Finger in the Nose was started by Siv-Tone Kverneland, a talented Norwegian living in Paris. She calls her style, “a mouth watering and eclectic combination of French chic and Scandinavian cool” Sounds good to me! Inspired by her little daughter Selma, she wanted to create wonderful clothes that children would fall in love with and mothers would be jealous of. I think she’s off to a great start.

Finger in the Nose is the ultimate hipster clothing line…I’m usually more a fan of kid’s dressing like kids and not like little grown ups but this line is pretty damn cute. The collection is influenced by eighties L.A. (hot!) and was designed to be fashionable but durable. I especially love the boy’s clothes and think they would be great on a slightly older kiddos—with a penchant for struttin’ like a rock star….

These kids are so rockin’, I love ’em. The skinny plaid stove pipe pants above are totally cool….and I love the boy’s in their rad jackets. They just need a micro Vespa like the one I saw at the flea market a few years ago.

So what are you feeling? A Little Bit Country or A Little Bit Rock? I think a healthy mix of both is just what the fashion doctor ordered.

Make Way for Little Ducklings Clothing

I love it when designers riff on classic children’s style.  It’s all about taking those classics, but keeping ’em comfy.  But what really really makes it super amazing is that aha moment. You know, that little moment where your heart smiles with the cleverness of it all.  I like sweetness in my kid’s clothes, but not too cloying. And U.K. based clothing line, Little Duckling gets it all right.

For example, I love this take on overalls with the fun straps just up the ante on the charm in such a lovely way. And the wide legged pants are killing me!

Or the addition of the sweet heart shaped pockets just can’t help but make you smile, eh?  And you know how much I love gingham too.

Linen is such a great and forgiving fabric.  I adore this very clever addition of a draw string waist with a great punch of color with this limey green goodness.  As you know, I love love love a good small print onesie, don’t you? And this print with a little person flying a kite is just too cute for words.

Oh Little Duckling, I can’t wait to see what you produce next!

Vintage Fabric Restyled by Baby Bean

I love vintage fabric.

I particularly love a good dress made out of vintage fabric.

And when it happens to be made for a little girl–well, let’s just say, it is a veritable trifecta of awesomeness. Like these dresses from Baby Bean Wear.

This plucky little company hails from the grand state of Texas and is the brainchild of Christine Visneau, who studied Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and draws her inspiration from her two little girls who give her many ideas about style, comfort, durability and fit.  Each collection is crafted from and inspired by vintage fabrics. Each garment is handmade and truly one-of-a-kind.

Oh, and  are theyAMAZINGLY BUTTON KOOT!

Like these little cutie patooties!

Oh what is the charm of a little rose print couple with a bit of lace?

I just can’t stand it. This yellow one is killing me!

These little rompers for girls made of vinntage fabric are killing me.  I particularly love the blue roses.

I know, right? So stinky adorable.

Oh, can’t you just see this on a little girl in the summer strolling around the backyard running away from the gardening hose?  So yummy.  And we all need a little yummy in our lives, right?

Freakin’ for Batikin’ with Hiho for Kids

I remember batik from my middle school art class.

I think it involved wax and color and a lot of mess. And some weird pattern that involved a whole lot of tie dye and looked very very home-ec gone so very very wrong.

Later in my life and a trip to Fiji changed my perspective on batik and now whenever I see it, I think of the South Pacific and beautiful intricate fabric that has a lovely island feel.  But I wouldn’t have immediately thought kid’s clothing until I saw Hiho Batiks and their amazing line of kids clothes featuring modern and fun batik patterns on t-shirts, onesies and girls dresses.

Andy Warhol and her own childhood were the merged inspiration for Hiho founder,  Julia Silver Gordon to start her batik empire.   Julia started almost 15 years ago with a single boutique in Boulder, Colorado that catered primarily to the music business, as she created one-of-a-kind designs for mega rockers such as Widespread Panic, Carlos Santana and Ween.

I love these great t-shirts for boys. So colorful and wearable too.

And the onesies really are killer!

I particularly love the girly heart shirt. And clearly it has the presidential stamp of approval.

But I really dig the little dresses made of comfy t-shirt fabric. Yum!

And get a load of this–Hiho Batik also does kid’s parties, which is almost as cool as the rented bouncy house, but wow! what a different and great craft for a party.
