Vintage Crush: Daniel Green slippers

There is nothing more addictive than a good Ebay search.

I have some set up for daily search updates. The list is long, but the one I remember and want the most is for a pair of Daniel Green brocade slippers size 10. (I know, I am a large footed lass!)

My obsession with these darling slippers began when my mother purchased a pair like the ones below for a fancy vacation with my Dad.  Her pair was bought on sale at Nordstrom for I believe $10.00. (My mother is the consummate bargain shopper-FYI.)  She loved them and was very excited to finally own a pair of Daniel Green slippers. However, during their airplane travel, my Mom’s luggage was lost and never returned. Unfortunately she never found another pair of discounted Daniel Green slippers, but she missed them.

Aren’t they darling?

Daniel Green slippers have been around for a long long time–since 1881, when a young shoe salesman named Daniel Green was inspired by slippers that workers at a piano factory made with the excess felt from leftover from the pianos.  Those little felt slippers turned into something fancier over the years.

When you think of those fancy satin high heel slippers that female celebrities wore with a stunning pegnoir, you were probably looking at a pair of Daniel Green slippers.

Amazing, right? And they are for sale. Right now.

Truly a gift to be cherished.  Wouldn’t you like to see a pair of these for Mother’s Day?

I think I’ll take one of each!

These little elf booties aren’t as fancy as pompom ones, but still so charming, yes?

From Salon of the Dames

These darlings are from the Frou Frou line and cost about $8.00 in the 1940s when they were introduced.  Divine, aren’t they?

From Straight Talking Mama

In the fifties/sixties, they started to shy away from the heel and focus more on creating a charming ballet flat.

From StutteringMama

But it was when Daniel Green incorporated its signature brocade that things really began to take off.  And many of the company’s famous brocade ones are available today in very good condition too!

Now these little gems are going for only $15 for some lucky size 7 footed lass.

Oh, how I wish I could squeeze my large feet into these gorgeous beauties, which must go to some lucky size 8.

I may have to write a little letter to our friends at Daniel Green who make some lovely slippers, but need to bring back the brocade ones, don’t you think?

And they truly are comfy! It says so on each insole of Daniel Green shoes. Each pair lasts quite some time and the quality is amazing.  I love the idea of buying a pair of these with my black yoga pants adding a bit of glamour to my work at home day.

Do you have fancy house slippers?

Super Scandinavian Goodness // ittikid

 photo itti_TITLE.jpg

Vibrant colors! Whimsical prints! The World of ittikid is so playful and fun, I fell in love with them the moment  I laid eyes on them. Filled with hip Scandinavian brands like Smafolk,  Maxomorra, Duns Sweden, and Sture&Lisa, their stylish duds are sure to make you smile. I knew I had to find out more about this cool shop, so I sat down with the wonderfully creative Melanie Miller for a virtual cuppa coffee and a chat!

 photo itti_2.jpg

MODERN KIDDO: Hey Melanie! Thanks so much for sitting down with us. I have to tell you how much I love ittikid! You have the best collection of  unique and colorful clothing. How did ittikid come to be? Do you have a personal connection to Scandinavia or are you simply a fan?

MELANIE: Believe it or not, ittikid just kind of happened. I became a stay at home mom after moving from LA to Sonoma County. On the hunt to find some fun new clothes for my little guy, I became obsessed with Scandinavian kids clothes. Having been born in Denmark and spending my childhood there, I was completely nostalgic about the prints, patterns, and body styles they offered. I was finding all this great stuff online, but I could not find them anywhere in the US. I knew immediately that I needed to change that. I booked a ticket to Denmark, and six months later my glory moment came. Ittikid launched, and I got to share my love for Scandinavian children’s fashion with kids and families across the US.

MODERN KIDDO: AMAZING!! I love that you saw a need and decided to do something about it. So fantastic. What were you doing before you started ittikid?

MELANIE: Well, before ittikid, I had yolk, a modern lifestyle and furniture store in the Silverlake Neighborhood of Los Angeles. Yolk was my first baby, and my introduction to sharing my style with the world. In the beginning, my focus was on showcasing up-and-coming product and furniture designers, artists, and illustrators.

Then, my son Ollie was born a year and a half after opening my shop. He was a shop baby, and spent much of his first year living at the store. Naturally, after having a real baby, my focus began to shift, and I became fascinated with the world of all things baby and kid. By the time I sold the store two years later, half of it was dedicated to modern kids furniture, bedding, toys, books, and clothes.

It was the beginning of my transition into the fabulous world of all things baby and kid!

MODERN KIDDO: Speaking of, how many kiddos do you have ?

MELANIE: My two little dudes, Ollie and Gus, are just about to turn 5 and 9. They have grown up as my ittikids. They both love the fun and colorful prints and are partial to ittikid brands because they are so comfortable and soft. They love to pick out their own prints and patterns, and I often have to hide my deliveries to unpack when they are not around so they don’t go bonkers and devour my inventory! I absolutely love when they come downstairs ready to go in a blue and yellow velour striped seventies style pantsuit or the like.

We literally move clothes from one drawer to the next, and then on to cousins and friends. It is kind of amazing that three or four kids through, they are still being passed on to more.

 photo itti_7.jpg

MODERN KIDDO: The clothes you select for your shop are SO vibrant and fun. Where do you find most of your inspiration from??

MELANIE: Well, I am a big collector of vintage, for the kitchen and for kids. I can’t help myself when it comes to retro baby and kids clothes, textiles, wallpaper, illustrations, and children’s books. I am a Saturday morning “garage sailer” and the crazy lady who stands in line for estate sales on Friday mornings (an hour before they open!).

I have to say that I am also obsessed with Pinterest. My boards are overflowing with things I love and covet. I love browsing through boards when I need a little a little inspiration to get me started. I have found so many great blogs and resources that I would have never stumbled upon otherwise.

 photo itti_1.jpg

MODERN KIDDO: When you’re not taking over the world with ittikid, what do you and your family like to do?

MELANIE: Our favorite family thing to do? Hop in the car and take a good, fun, adventurous road trip! We only get to do this once or twice a year, and the reality is, we live in the Country. We have goats, cows, a chocolate lab, and there are always a million chores to do. We garden, harvest, can, preserve, and bake together. We ride bikes, tromp through the woods, build things, and have some seriously fun “run through the sprinkler” sessions. We have friends and their families up to split firewood for the winter. All the kids run wild for the day, and we always end it with a big BBQ, bonfire, and s’mores.  A big departure from our days in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but we love it in the country!

MODERN KIDDO: Ahhh, that sounds like heaven! OK, last questions. Something fun….if we were to pop by the ittikid offices, what would we find playing on your playlist?

MELANIE: Oooh, well, I am a Pandora junkie… I shuffle my playlists and let it go! I am a mixed bag. A few things you might hear: The Pixies, Betty Davis, Peter Bjorn and John, The Cure, The Buzzcocks, Blur, Albert Hammond Jr., and maybe even a little AC/DC on Friday afternoon.

MODERN KIDDO: Aw yeah! Melanie you are my kinda gal! Thank you sooo very much for sitting down with me. We love you and your company!

Friends, stay tuned this afternoon for a fantastic giveaway from our friends at ittikid!

Dottie’s kitchen garden

 photo gardenspring3.jpg

This year, I was determined to get a little garden growing. Since we moved into this house, we’ve been making minor improvements to the back yard. I think the little curving brick path was part of the reason I fell in love with our little nook of a house.  And I saw tremendous potential in making a wonderful garden that I could hopefully feed my family with.

When I worked at Old Sturbridge Village as a costumed interpreter in the summer during college, I used to work the kitchen garden there.  I helped plant many rows of beets and carrots during my days and got a taste for fresh gardening. But being a busy working mom, I wanted to spend my down time relaxing in the back yard instead of tending to a little kitchen garden.  I must admit, I probably spent more time doing armchair gardening thanks to one too many issue of Sunset Magazine and Gardener’s Supply catalog.

Last year, we did manage to plant a pear tree and several blueberry and blackberry bushes that hopefully will treat us to many a luscious pie over the next few years. We also added a raspberry plant with plans to buy some golden raspberries in May.

And this year, I finally got around to planting some seeds in that lovely raised garden bed Eric so dutifully planted for me last year.

Armed with a few packets of leek, beets and carrot seeds, I planted the garden in early March.  The Peach was a most devoted seed planter. Our rows weren’t all that straight, but I’m sure that won’t effect the taste of the vegetables in the long run.  And I planted a few starters of kale as well.

And then we just waited.  The seeds aren’t anywhere near ready to pluck from the earth, but that kale is good to go!

It is so beautiful.

I decided that the best solution for these grand kale leaves would be Kim Seversen’s Kale and Ricotta Salata.  It was the right choice.

Are you growing a garden this year? What is your favorite thing to plant?

The Eyes Have It.

 photo keane1.jpeg

I’m obsessed with Margaret Keane. When most people hear the name “Keane” they think of the somewhat cheesy big-eyed orphan paintings. What most people don’t know is that Margaret Keane’s early work in the 1960s is very different. She painted some of the most deliciously languid mod portraits around. True, the big dreamy eyes were still there….but these paintings are decidedly more grown up. I have a few prints of hers and an amazing book with excellent photo plates. I thought it would be fun to take a look!

 photo keane2.jpeg

See what I mean? Still a tad creepy, but in a beautifully dreamy way…I love these petulant girls sipping their coffee:

Ahhh, the old portrait within a portrait. Creepily awesome.

While we are on the topic of the “classic Keane” look, allow me to dazzle you with a little of the history behind the Legend of Keane. It’s a good story. Back in the 60s, Walter Keane was known as the Master of the Big Eyed Waifs. While Margaret did these more chic ladies, his images were largely of young children with hauntingly sad eyes. The Keanes opened up a gallery in 1959 in New York and it quickly became a success. Walter was the consummate business man and the story goes that he would often leave faux packing cases addressed to famous movie stars so people would walk in and say, “Oooh, Dean Martin is buying one? I better get one before the prices go up!” Crafty, eh?

Throughout the ’60s, the popularity of Keane paintings soared. Stars like Joan Crawford, Natalie Wood, Dean Martin, Dinah Shore, Liberace and even Zsa Zsa Gabor all owned original Keane paintings. My favorite is this crazy portrait of Jerry Lewis and his family. And their pets. All with longing eyes. Totally insane:

In the ’70s LIFE magazine declared Keane’s paintings to be the most popular art in the western world. They even got a nod in the Woody Allen movie, “Sleeper” (Diane Keaton, presented with a big-eye painting, squeals with delight, “It’s Keane, it’s pure Keane!”).

In 1965, Margaret and Walter went through a bitter divorce—and it was revealed that Margaret was ACTUALLY THE ONE PAINTING ALL THE PAINTINGS! Walter simply took credit for them. It was never clear whether it was because they thought a male artist would have more credibility or if it was because he was a savvy, controlling business man. Either way, Walter was now attempting to stop her from painting “big eyed waifs” claiming he was the one who originated the style. They battled in court for years and finally the case made it to a federal court. The judge requested that a “Paint Off” and asked that they each paint right then and there in the court room. Margaret triumphantly dashed off a quick portrait of a saucer-eyed child looking over a fence….while Walter, in a TOTAL Brady Bunch style maneuver, claimed he couldn’t paint because of a neck/shoulder injury. HAH! Needless to say, Margaret won. Bravo Margaret!

I had to confess I’m not much into any of her post Walter stuff. She said that while she was “living a lie” and letting him take credit, all her paintings had “sad eyes”. Her later work (in the 80s and 90s) has “bright eyes” as a result of her new-found happiness. ANYWAY….let’s get back to her sad eyes, shall we?

image: the lovely whoreange

To date, Margaret Keane’s work has been discovered by a new generation and claims fans like John Waters, Tim Burton, Matthew Sweet and David LaChappelle. As I said in last week’s Link Hootenanny, Tim Burton is  directing the biopic on her life starring Amy Adams and Ryan Reynolds. I’m looking forward to that one!
The popularity of Margaret’s big-eyed babes inspired a slew of copycats…but I think we’ll save that for a follow up post, yes? So whatcha think friends….are these paintings terrific or terrifying? As Margaret herself has said, “You either love them or hate them….there really is no in between.”
