Dottie's Kiddie Kraft Korner

What can I say, I love a good craft.  I don’t feel right unless I have some sort of project out involving needles–whether it be knitting, sewing, quilting, needle-pointing, embroidering–anything I can get my hot little hands on.

But then that little bundle of Peachy joy came into my life and it seemed that all of my creativity went into thinking of all the ways I could hug and kiss her.  Sadly, there’s a bit of dust on my sewing machine and my knitting needles are on a high shelf away from Baby’s prowling hands and mouth. But it is hard with my little muse, Miss Peach toddling around and there are so many great things I *could* be making for her.

But I’m gonna turn my craft frown upside down and instead buckle up for some armchair crafting!  I will craft by osmosis, sucking up the wunderkind cleverness of others out there in the blogosphere. Because hoo boy! is there some serious crafty awesomeness out there that deserves a shout out.  Handy mommas,  daddies,  Nanas, Grandads, unks and aunties–let me salute you here at:

Expect features on great crafters, terrific crafts, crafting trends aplenty.  To start this little bonanza off, here are some great craft tutorials that will surely send you hotfooting it to Michael’s asking for glue gun stick refills and ric rac.

You all know about Prudent Baby, right? Because they are totally awesome and make me melt with happiness over their very crafty cleverness.  Those charming ladies are overflowing with genius ideas that are not only completely cute, but also stretch clothing beyond their original uses. For example, check out these adorable denim knickers.  Another reason to love them–we share that irrational sewer fear of button holes.

Of course you could sew a skirt, but knitting one for your little one just takes it up a notch.  And they are so comfy–like this one from uber online knitting magazine, Knitty called, Oh Mickey and designed by Jacquelyn Landry.

There are moments in Craftlandia, where you see something so head smackingly ingenius that you want to run out and make it right now.  That’s how I felt about this make your own baby tights tutorial by Rae from Made By Rae.  I love that she used old stretchy knit shirts that were probably destined for Salvation Army and gave them a second life!

I nearly lost it when I saw how adorable these cutie patootie hankie bloomers are from This Mama Makes Stuff!  I’ll let that mama make me stuff any time if they are as darling as these bloomers made from vintage hankies.

Our Lady of the Craft, Martha Stewart, must be mentioned because she is all things home-ec and to not include a project by Martha would almost be a sacrilege to any craft focused post!  And it is one of my favorites–a girl’s shirt dress! So sweet!

I hope this post spark your own inner craftiness and I hope it will inspire me to pull out those needles and get creative! And I’d love to hear what you are working on right now that is making you smile!

Happy crafting, ya’ll!

Kiddo Rooms: Color in Canada

Hello gang. It’s baby day at the Kiddo, where we take a gander at all things teensy. Today we have a super cute nursery that I’ve been dying to show off. Now, I’m a big believer that color is always awesome.  That baby boys and girls can survive without living in a pale blue or blush pink world. Don’t get me wrong, I think pastels can be extremely elegant and lovely. But how much more fun to be totally unexpected with your nursery? Like, what would you say if I told you to consider painting your nursery walls GREY? Well don’t answer that until you see this lovely space my friend Virginie in Montreal has created for her wee one. It’s quite the stunner!

I love love love it! The grey is unexpectedly soothing and serene, but then the pops of green and red make it really fun and playful. Virginie is so creative and cool—her little man-on-the-way is going to be a lucky boy for sure!

The sheets were remixed from a pair of vintage 70s fitted “grown up” sheets (so crafty!). The crib is the simple, sleek (and affordable!) Gulliver from IKEA. That mobile? Yup. It’s vintage—and its Fisher Price. (You know we give that the thumbs up!) The wall are are framed animal prints by J. Sharkey Thomas, from 1973. I think you’ll recognize some more Fisher Price on the shelf above the dresser!

That blue velvety chair is vintage and the big mirror is IKEA! You can see a peek of some vintage curtains on the left.

I love her fun diaper bag! (the Dash bag from Skip Hop) And it wouldn’t be Modern Kiddo if we didn’t take a peek into those dresser drawers. Check out THIS amazingly cute collection:

Virginie thank you so much for sharing this gorgeous room with us. We can’t wait to welcome your little kiddo into this big ol’ world!

PS Oh and the walls? The color is a luscious warm grey called Ashley Grey, by Benjamin Moore.

Yup! It’s That Time of The Week Again…

And this week, friends, we are going to focus in on one particular area of supreme baby kootness! Those widdle footies! The ones you just want to nom on and kiss all day long.

Although it is a shame to cover those little sugarfooties* up,  let’s do it in style with the nice selection we pulled together for your viewing pleasure–all available in sizes 0-12 months. And we’ve come a long way from those white ankle boots of yore.

These Zid Zid Eco Moroccan booties are just killing me with their sublime yumminess. I like the blue pair the most.

I’m in love with these Livie & Luca pink Holland boot. It kinda has that old school feeling to it that is making me that I. MUST. OWN. THEM. Why do you make me suffer so, Livie and Luca?

Right now my husband is in love with tweed, so I expect that he’ll buy these tweedy numbers for the Peach as soon as I post this. Sigh.

I think red and brown is such a great color combo–it reminds me of little red robins.  And in these tiny loafers, well, they are just stinktown cute.

Robeez are a baby shower staple for good reason–particularly when they put such wacky adorableness on their shoes, like this knighted fox pair–what a hoot!

Oh, but then I went to Etsy and lost my mind is baby shoe adorableness.  Crafters throw down the gauntlet of button cuteness when it comes to baby shoes.  Let me share a few with you…

Etsy seller, Garden Alley is cranking the cuteness level up to 11 with this embroidered pair:

FIE, Etsy seller, Gracious May–you are churning out some serious cuteness over at your shop! I don’t know what is cuter–the little foot or the little robot shoe over the foot?

And what about this Mary Jane or this kitty ones?

I have a not so hidden love of ticking fabric. And to use it for this tiny tiny shoes? Genius, Etsy seller, Cutienesser.

Nothing says love like knit booties, right? Etsy seller HandknitHugs is rocking my world. How could she not with these two cozy posie pairs that say love luv LOVE?   I’m dying here.

And you know how I love a good upcycled sweater? Well, pair that with baby booties and you end up with this little bit of awesomeness, the town boot from Etsy seller, Wooly Baby.

I broke a tooth on this cuteness!

*My mother grew up in the South and Sugarfoot was a term of endearment, so it was tossed around a lot in my childhood with smiles and cuddles. But as an adult, whenever I use the phrase anywhere else, I get looks of complete horror. Please bring back that awesome phrase. And say it with a Southern drawl for effect!

You Spin Me Right Round: Vintage Kiddo Records

Faced with a very rainy weekend, we tried to dream up some fun things to do that involved staying cozy in our home. As I surveyed the crazy mess that we call the living room, I glanced over at our turntable and realized we hadn’t played any records since Christmas. I have a pretty decent sized collection of old kid’s albums and so we spent a wonderful afternoon building Legos, making a cardboard house for the cats—and listening to records. It was awesome! And it got me thinkin’….

image: jaxonista ( alas this isn’t mine. we have a grown up turntable…)

One of the main reasons I love vintage (aside from the CRAZY GOOD design) is because I’m all about the nostalgia. I love listening to the same records I listened to as a kid and sharing them with my little guy. It makes me giddy to the point of tears. I’m not kidding, I got totally verklempt when Wolfie decided he loved Free to Be You and Me, the Marlo Thomas 70s extravaganza. (As an aside you MUST get this on DVD for your kiddo. It’s the best show ever….groovy music, adorable animation, fun songs, rad 70s stars. I LOVE IT.)

OK. Back to business. Like most vinyl junkies, I love that crackle as you gently plunk the needle on the record, but I also love the ritual of sitting cross-legged on the floor and checking out the album art. Vintage kid’s records are a treasure trove of amazing artwork. You’ll find cool illustrations, bright colors, amazing fonts and genius type treatments. Since you all seemed to enjoy our little trip down memory lane with vintage Fisher Price, I thought it’d be fun to check out some awesome records covers. C’mon, let’s go!

First up, Romper Room. I love how formal these kids are—little bow ties and riding caps? Where is this preschool?? The songs on this album are all pretty adorable, even those Know-It-All braggers on the Doo-Bee Song. (click to take a listen) Hmm, I should write a new version of this song for bloggin: “Doo-Bee a Comment Leaver!” “Don’t be a Lil Lurker!” hyuck hyuck.

The line art on this next one is super duper, but let’s face it….any record that’s all about helping mommy at clean-up time is aces in my book. Ya hear that daddies??

image: tweedlebop (who is a pal of mine and an amazing illustrator in his own right!)

Look how super stylish these kiddos are. The cute lil pigtails on blue dress girl, that fab green stripey shirt on the little “A” boy—and check out that jaunty hip action on the kid on the right. I love him! I can just hear him shouting, “C is for CHARO!”

image: neatocoolville

The Disneyland record and book combo was a personal favorite of mine. I had so many of these little “read-a-long” books and can still hear that British woman saying, “You will know it is time to turn the page, when you hear Tinker Bell ring her chimes…..LIKE THIS.” They usually hired different illustrators and I even like that record/book logo in the top left. I never had this particular record, but  I’m so glad I found it. Who knew the wolf was such a groovy guy??

image:  *julia

OK, this one is from my personal record…..and while the music was ok, I remember thinking the album art was brilliant. Ernie, Bert and Cookie Monster as the Bee Gees?? Amazing. I remember all the teens in the neighborhood were groovin’ to “How Deep Is Your Love?” but they didn’t have anything on me and my disco Sesame. I felt like I was SO COOL. The cover was a fold-out and the inside art work was hysterical….Grover doing his best John Travolta dance moves. Check it out here, but then please come back….I’m not done with you yet!

image: Alix, modernkiddo

Sometimes I’ll find a great album cover but then the music is just kinda “meh.” Lemme tell ya, Sesame Street and Disney single-handedly produced some of the best records…I swear they had great artwork AND amazing songs.  How can you go wrong with a musical Monster-Osity?? That’s a whole lotta fun fur goin’ on.

image: Alix, modernkiddo

The artwork on this album is just the tops….I love the scripty way they’ve written “Puff” and his little sparkling scales are so adorable.

image: leifpeng

I’m not sure if this is very PC….I guess it should be called the Ten Little Indiginous Peoples….but….well….I just can’t help it. I think the font on “Ten Little” is fab and the little I.Ps are adorable.

image: Picture_Books

These illustrations make me crazy, they’re so good. They look like they were plucked straight out of a children’s book….that little boy and the little city?? Amazing.  I want a whole book like this. Also, that little crazy space age bubble head logo character in the red square?? I don’t know who or what he is, but he’s AWESOME.

image: wardomatic (a genius illustrator with the coolest wife ever, hula70)

This is another one that looks like a storybook. The playful little train is like charm on wheels. I’m intrigued by the “dramatic play and participation” bit. How dramatic can a play get?

image: wardomatic again

I remember when I spied this one in the record bin at Thrift Town … my eyes bugged out. LOVE that Veruca Salt’s little pink dress…and who knew Violet Beauregarde led a secret double life as ANNIE???

image: Alix, modernkiddo

OK, we take a break from illustration for two SPECTACULAR photographic covers. The hipster kids on this one are so bad ass. Like, “What? Yeah that’s right. I’m about to watusi to On Top of Old Smokey, now I suggest you step off, jack.”

image: Alix, modernkiddo

Hewwwww. Oh Marcy. Where do I begin….the waxy complexion? The vacant look in the eye? THE FREAKIN’ WEIRD DOLL holding her hand?? Honestly I don’t even know which one is “Marcy” but all I know is gingham has never looked creepier. I’m surprised they didn’t call this one, “Lord have Marcy.”

image: The Retro-Spectre

OK, now that I have the heebie jeebies, I feel like we need to end on a happy note. The sweet simplicity of this one is a personal fave. “La la la!” We La La LOVE you Bert.

Tha-tha-that’s all folks! (“Great Alix, first the Ten Little Indians, now you’re making fun of people with a stutter?? NICE.”) Aw you know I’m just joshin’ ya. I hope you enjoyed this little jaunt down the vintage record store aisles! Do you remember any of these? What were some of your favorites?

MODERN KIDDO TIP: You can easily  find vintage kiddo records at thrift shops and on ebay. The tricky part is making sure they are in great condition. Most vintage children’s records are sadly a little trashed, but you have to remember that these are albums that are well worn and well loved. I’ve been pretty lucky to score many that are in primo condition, and it makes a difference! Be sure to check (or ask questions) when buying! If you don’t have a record player, that’s ok….you can frame the albums and hang them in your kiddo’s room. If the record label is cool, or it’s pressed on colored vinyl, you can even hang the record itself!

Vintage Kiddo Monday: Retro Roundup

Howdy folks! With lilacs in bloom and days getting longer, owe just can’t help but push their winter duds into the farthest corner of the closet and pull out the finery of spring and summer.

Now, this little corduroy tie top vintage dressy making good use of ric rac.  But let’s gild that lily with some widdle birdies and tulips.

Where do you find such goodies, Oh Sydney?

Swim lessons surely lurk in the folds of summer. Check out these sweet boys knit striped swim trunks.  They are all the rage in Europe and are becoming big stateside to boot! I know with swim wear, you want new, and these swim trunks are old stock,  means they were never sold and never worn! Woohoo! The red pair has a tag. The brown pair doesn’t.

Right on trend, Kim.Ber.Go.

I almost didn’t post these because I wanted them myself!  Two adorable little overalls–perfect for summer fun! You could put a little t-shirt under them or if it gets really hot, just suit up and go!  Two for under $12.00 too!

And the prints are killing me! Polka dotted elephants? Green pigs? What kind of zoo has these animals, Etsy seller StellaBluz?

Sunflowers can be a bit of a fickle fashion flower at times feeling more Hee Haw than hip. But this vintage little shift got the sunflower down perfectly. Polkadots and sunflowers make perfect sense to me!

I’m picking up what you are putting down, ebay seller, theVioletorChild.

I was cracking up over these vintage bell-bottoms featuring famous logos. Or *ARE* they? Victer with an E? And Aunt “Gimima”? Even in the seventies, copyright infringement fear was strong.

You won this round, RobotParade4Kids

Blast off with these great sneakers festooned with rocket ships–I see a flying saucer and what looks like Apollo Nine.  But I love the big white rubber shoe guard in front. Man, I would have killed for a pair this awesome!

Nice find, ebay seller, Servant2him.

I love this great vintage shirt with an interesting plaid of red and blue. This is one that my sweetie asked if it came in his size. Sorry, sweetie–just for boys!

Who wouldn’t want to get it for their own “wee men” And it is Sanforized…  Excellent call, eBay seller, 4sons4fun.

Even though your little one is too young to be sipping Mai Tais, he can still have a tiki good time with this great bright vintage Hawaiian shirt!

Mahalo, Etsy seller, Uncommon Eye!

And because I love you all so very much, I’m sharing this crown jewel of vintage awesomeness with you (instead of buying it myself), but someone must buy this. Please! This adorable yellow plaid coat makes me want a little chill in the air. Sigh!

Dottie go crazy over Etsy seller JudyGoVintage!

And then there is this friend.  I just had to include it. The elephant beanie.  I just try to think about the story behind this beanie. What could it be? A fabulous circus themed birthday party–and this hat is the giveaway?  The prototype beanie before they added the propeller? The mind is overwhelmed with possibilities.

I must admit that I have a complete fear of beanies with things on the top thanks to that surreal (in the true sense of the word) movie by Dr. Seuss made in 1953 full of cold war fear and Auntie Mame camp. Based on a child’s dream laced with his hatred of piano lessons, this movie scarred me as a child, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T has given millions of children bad dreams for over half a century.

I found that image at the most awesome Website ever, Traumafessions. You can thank me for introducing you to this after after you’ve spent your entire lunch hour on it. ‘Nuff said.

But I saved the best for last–this great vintage hat from MK favorite, Lishyloo!  This hat is just bananas–it has all of these crazy and completely random sayings all over it like “rocking chair”, and “a pretty beaver”, and “up in the air.”

Could I get confirmation on the “a pretty beaver” line, Lish? That is almost too bizarre! Can anyone else make it out?

And to sweeten this week even more, Lishyloo is having a vintage kids clothing sale–with more than 30 items all under $15. Like that hat, which is only seven clams for all that awesomeness.

Happy Monday!
