It’s official: the Peach has entered the PRINCESS stage

Over the weekend Peach returned from visiting her friend down the street wearing the pinkest of pink princess creations. But what made it work was the absolute joy and huge smile the Peach was wearing along with this polyester pink outfit. She held up the sides as if she was wearing a wedding dress and whispered to me, “isn’t this beeeyootiful?”

And then she started spouting off the names of different princesses to movies she hadn’t seen–Ariel! Cinderella! Sleeping Beauty! Jasmine!

Well, I knew it was going to happen.

The Peach has discovered princesses and all the glamour that goes along with being one.    I know a lot of women (including myself) who roll their eyes when they see all the princess themed stuff out there. In fact, I didn’t like it when family members would call the Peach “a little princess” when she was a baby. For some reason I connoted the word “princess” with spoiled-have-daddy-buy-you-a-new-car-when-you-turn-16-never-earn-a-paycheck lifestyle. Where I got this, I honestly have no idea. Maybe some random movie or TV show? I’m not sure.  Princesses weren’t about being empowered and strong! They were simpering seconds who needed to be saved, right?

And let’s not forget the pink princesses who reign supreme and assault you as soon as you enter any toy section of a store—yeech!

But hang on a second… if you think about it, Disney princesses are all pretty good ladies. They’re always fighting for their rights, kind to others, never giving up, and oftentimes very humble.  Not bad role models, in my eyes.  I wouldn’t mind hanging out with Merida from Brave. And I have a feeling Cinderella and Snow White are probably good eggs as well as animal lovers.

And let’s face it—those princesses have great wardrobes.  The Peach admittedly seems more enthralled with the dresses than some Freudian review of what it means to be a princess—especially since she’s never even seen one of the movies.  Then I thought back to when I was a kid and I loved princesses too when I was her age!  I loved pretty pretty pretty dresses! I still do love a fabulous dress and it hasn’t hurt my I.Q. or made me less successful or less funny or employable!

I’ll take dressing like a princess any day of the week over the Peach wanting to dress like a teenager and wear skimpy clothing. In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion that I will miss this glittery, tiara loving, pretty dress stage when it is over. Especially when it is this darn cute!

Have you dealt with the dreaded princess obsession? Please tell me I’m not alone in my mixed up feelings about princesses.

Cool {Alternative} Doodle Coloring Books

I love art. When I was a child I could sit on the floor and color in my coloring books for hours on end! When Wolfie was born I had fantasies of the two of us drawing together all day long. Alas, I have a confession to make: Wolfie doesn’t like drawing. Yep. It’s true. And he’s not big on coloring. He’ll do it….but it’s not his first choice by annnnny stretch of the imagination. He *does* love painting, but it’s definitely more of a production than just whipping out a box of crayons or colored pencils and a sweet lil coloring book or pad of paper.

So lately I’ve been on a quest to find cool coloring books to help nurture a little more appreciation of drawing. I mean, I don’t want to force Wolfie to do something he doesn’t want to do, but I also really think young children need a bit of guidance and exposure to things and drawing is SUCH a fab activity—it promotes creativity, coordination and above all IMAGINATION!

So I bought one of those big ol Doodles: A Really Giant Coloring and Doodling Books. It’s super cute but I gotta tell ya, the thing weighs a good 5 pounds and it’s hard to get the pages to stay open, because it’s so thick. So I was back to square one. Here are three fun ones that we’ve been totally digging.

1. LET’S DRAW! Inspiring Fun Projects for You to Personalize

This book is super cute. The paper is recycled and has a beige textured quality and the book is the perfect thickness for flipping open and drawing away. The “projects” are simple and fun. One page directs you to simply draw diamond shapes and then the next tells you to turn those same shapes into creatures. Many of the pages are more about creating patterns and using color then actually creating an entire scene and I think that is a really great approach!

2. Ye Olde Doodles By Andrew Pinder

Wolfie is really fascinated with history these days and we recently stumbled upon this super cool book! Each page is filled with historical facts, tales and trivia. The drawing instructions are all related to the historical “story”. Rather than gentle, sweet swirly  images, these pages are action-packed scenarios that occasionally verge on the macabre, so be forewarned it’s definitely for older children!

“The Chinese invented gunpowder. They used it for fireworks and in battle. Create your own stunning fireworks display!”

Here’s an example of a crazy page. This one is about the French Revolution. On the one hand, there was a page directing you to decorate Marie Antoinette’s wig. Then the next page? “The guillotine was a deadly machine used to execute people during the French Revolution. Fill the baskets with heads.” Too much?? Probably. But for an 8 year old boy it’s also kind of awesome. In a totally gross way, of course. [This book was published in England….oh you crazy Europeans! haha!]

3. Tag This! A Doodle Book.

Finally, there is this book. Wolfie and I have been talking a lot about grafitti lately. Living in an urban area we see quite a bit of it all over town. Of course we’ve talked about how it’s illegal and lots of pieces are ugly hastily scribbled things…. but we also talk about how some pieces are really amazing and we love seeing beautiful, colorful murals. This book is really fun. The pages are filled with very quirky cool photographs of street scenes, blank walls, bottoms of skateboards etc and you get to tag/draw all over it. It’s a really fun take on the doodle book!

(it helps when you have an uncle who is a fantastic artist! haha….)

So there you have it. Three alternatives to the class coloring book! Do you have a child who isn’t as into coloring? I don’t think I’ve EVER heard anyone admit that their child isn’t a rabid coloring fan or drawing lover….is Wolfie the one lone magical, non-drawing child out there???

Whether your child loves drawing or is a little more reluctant, I think these books are pretty fun! Do you have a favorite thing to do with your child to encourage their drawing? I’d love to hear more!

Meet Tayvee!

This is Tayvee! She’s almost three years old and lives in Brooklyn, New York. Her marvelous mama, Whitney is the magic maker behind one of my favorite Etsy shops, Little Reader Vintage. And when I saw the pictures of miss Tayvee, I was so excited that I knew you all would love this little lady!
A lot of Tayvee’s clothes are from her mama’s sweet shop, but Whitney also buys her things from other Etsy sellers, thrift stores, Zara, and H&M. Clearly ,it is a grand mix because this little lady has some pretty sweet ensembles!

Tayvee is quite a sophisticated, but fun kiddo who loves to visit museums, parks and zoos. Her favorite animal and best friend (slash sometimes arch-nemesis) is her super fluffy cat, Zooey.

And she inherited her mama’s fabulous style and cuteness to boot!

Tayvee’s favorite activities include: trips to the “donut shop”, riding the trains, reading and re-organizing her book collection, going on bike rides with Mumma and Papa, hosting tea parties, and taking pictures with her toy camera.

She also has an affinity for bouncy balls, preferably ones that light up. Her favorite song is “Sunny Days” (a.k.a. the Sesame Street song) and she sings it religiously every morning when she sees if it’s a “sunny day.” She’s quite the little ham…one of her go-to phrases to get laughs out of adults is “These pretzels are making me thirsty.” (Aww… so cute!)

You are a treasure Tayvee! And thanks for sharing her with us, Whitney!

PS:  Do YOU have a stylish kiddo you’d like to show off? Send ‘em our way! You can find submission details here. We love all kinds of kiddos…. vintage and thrift loving liddles, modern grooviness tots and simply sweet, down-to-earth kiddos.

Pump it up! The Revolutionary Method Fabric Softener Spray

For years, I was a huge fan of dryer sheets. I loved the extra softness it brought to my clothes, but I really hated those blasted crinkly, stick-to-everything sheets. I would be lying if I said I haven’t walked out of the house with one of those sheets stuck to the back of my pants. Sigh…

Image.

That is why I was particularly excited to hear about and try Method’s new Dryer Activated Fabric Softener Spray. Yes, I said SPRAY!

Instead of dealing with those lame sheets, the clever folks at Method have magically put all that cozy softness into a bottle so all you have to do is spray it four times into your dryer and let the heat of the dryer and the movement of your clothing tame all the scratchiness right out of your clothes. Your CLOTHES become the dryer sheet. Genius!

And what is particularly nice is that instead of gross tallow (a.k.a. beef fat) that a lot of other brands use, Method relies on friendly coconut oil to create its hypoallergenic spray, which is especially good news for the Peach and her super sensitive skin.

Speaking of the Peach, she not only loves the extra softness added to her clothes, but it is officially one of her new chores. She counts out the sprays with such glee and looks forward to helping mama out. Now, if she could only fold…

Speaking of folding. I have noticed since I started using Method’s Dryer-Activated Fabric Softener Spray that the our clothes don’t have as many wrinkles, which is a nice time and energy saver since I don’t have to plug the iron in and spend an extra hour or so ironing.

I gotta say, I’m totally crushing on the whole Method laundry system! Have you given it a try yet?
