Howdy gang! Well well. You may have though we were going to take a break since it’s a holiday but oh ho ho! Here at Fort Kiddo we never rest! I’m pleased to bring you a special little President’s Day e-thrifting session. Since last week’s edition was so popular, we’re going to try and make this a regular feature around here.

Heart on My Sleeve

Oh, heart. Your day is almost upon us.

No shape has as much of a burden to live up to as the heart. Be it bubbly, romantic or even broken,  the heart always makes an impact. Sorry circle and square–you are noble and charming, but it is the heart that makes us smile before we even know why.

Even heart haters can’t deny the heart’s charm when paired with a child. Particularly around Valentine’s Day where the heart takes center stage.

I like clever unexpected hearts like these on this sweet hat sung out instead of notes from a bird.  Thank you Etsy seller, Rompshop.

Send your little Valentine to bed in these heart happy pajamas from that land of all things awesome and Swedish,  Hanna Andersen.

Vintage loving parents (and I know you are out there…) will fall head over heels for this little sweet little jacket made from a vintage heart-laden tablecloth from Sugar Darling.

Give your little chef a chance to cook his or her heart out with this sweet little heart apron from Etsy seller, Monsbird.

And remember, boys can rock the hearts too. At least any boy wearing these skivvies from Etsy Seller, Small Threads.  Tee hee! You gotta start ’em early with the self esteem, amirite?

So wear your heart on your sleeve or on a little person’s sleeve and smile!

Retro Modern :: Cape Crusaders

What can I say? Capes rock. Remember when they were back in style for like a millisecond a couple of winters ago? Man, I should have bought one then—I don’t know why I waited. But I will not make that mistake for the Peach.  In my mind, capes make complete sense for little girls.  They are not as fussy as proper coats but have oodles of swish and sass which I think is a prerequisite for all things kid!  Plus capes are just more fun than coats.

Fortunately Etsy is awash with awesome capes like these from Etsy seller,  Katie Patatey who blew my mind with this demin cape with a vintage bit of cloth with a bird on it. Katie, you are killing with all this cuteness!

ASboutique is selling this gorgeous handmade cape with a ruffle neckline and a straw ticking lining.

I love upcycled wool projects and Handmade Charlotte’s clever use of a vintage mohair sweater to create an extra snuggly and extra gorgeous detailed collar for this this brown corduroy cape won me over.

Clearly I’m in a ruffly mood, because I can’t get enough of this ruffle cape in purple wool herringbone from Red Possum It is so cute that I think she should make this in a mommy size (hint hint, Red Possum…I’m just sayin’…)

I was about to leave Etsy, but then I saw this Valentine Heart Cape made of wool felt from brand spanking new Etsy seller, Heartfelt4Kids and I nearly plotzed, it is so adorable. I need to look away or it will steal my soul–IT IS THAT BEWITCHING!

Capes are also one of those things that seem very sewable.  And if you are one of those people that think capes are sewable, would you please make me one with this divine vintage cape pattern from Mom’s Patterns?  This particular pattern is available in two sizes–6 and 8 at Mom’s Pattern Website.

Heck, I wouldn’t mind if you made me the dress too! Man, that is cute! Just imagine making the dress and cape lining match? Ooohhh…..  Dream a little dream!

Smock it Up!

I love art class in elementary school.  My art teacher sent everyone home with a note asking parents to send along an old button down shirt from Dad’s closet to be used as a smock.

Of course, today’s kids are far too fabulous to wear something as humdrum as that! Particularly when there are so many good options for keeping your little kiddo’s fancy duds paint-free?

Lindsay over at The Good Ship Lollipop has one of the sweetest little smocks I’ve ever seen made out of gingham and floral oilcloths.  If this doesn’t inspire your little Georgia O’Keefe, I don’t know what will!

And check out the back view–it’s as pretty as the front. She also offers buyers a chance to choose their own oilcloth.  These are almost too cute to to wear only for arts and crafts.  Hmmm…  I wonder if  I could get away with putting the Peach in this as a dress…

Your little one will be craving Cray-Pas wearing this fun eco-friendly smock from 3 Sprouts.  If you aren’t keen on the frog, they also have a moo cow and monkey!

Land of Nod has a great selection of apron smocks that come in a great selection of prints from girly girly pink to manly plaid to dots dots dots.

And for the truly virtuous crafty people out there, I present you with this very clever tutorial to make your own smock from the fine folks at Prudent Baby, one of my favorite blogs out there!

But of course you can always use an extra large button down shirt…

Feeling Squirrelly…

I must admit that I love the owl trend that has blossomed over the past year, but I’m calling it now–squirrels are the owls of 2010.

And how could you not love squirrels when you see them used in such clever places such as these widdle shoes from Etsy seller, Burkeheart Baby.  They are stinky* cute!

Perhaps you want just a touch of squirrel–and if so, check out this little number from Kumquat Organic. With tuxedo ruffle accent. That is pure stinktown**!

Aren’t squirrels just made for onesie, like this one from Reform School which features a sassy drumming squirrel? Hipster alert!

Shall we put our beloved Sophie aside for this cute bit of wooden squirrelly goodness for our wee ones to gnaw on from Little Sapling Toys? I say yes, yes, YES!

Or let’s just go big or go home, shall we? With this Steiff Squirrel. So. Darn. Cute.

I must admit that I have a total thing for Steiff. I know. They are not even that squishy or soft, but something about them gets me all nostalgic and are so darn cozy to me. Seeing one makes me think of a 1930s English nursery with not too many toys, but very loved toys and this little Squirrel would be quite at home there.  I don’t know if it would be $250 at home with me, but still very tempting indeed!

Now, I’m off to eBay to see if I can find some vintage Steiff animals for the Peach!

PS:

* “Stinky” is Modern Kiddo speak for “adorable”

** “Stinktown” is Modern Kiddo speak for “insanely adorable”!!
